World’s Largest Headphones: Sound of the Colossus

When you have the world’s largest headphones, you don’t put them on your head. You sit between the earcups and let the sound assault you. These monstrous headphones were created by Dallyn Rule for the recent Mini Maker Faire in Vancouver, B.C.

headphones
They measure almost a full human body length and they are completely functional and made from 100% recycled material. Making this huge pair of headphones has been a dream of Dallyn’s since childhood.

They may be the only headphones designed to never ever touch your ears or head. Yet it still produces music designed for individual listening – like a surround that affects your entire body. And it doesn’t affect those around you very much at all. So it is a very personal way to experience music.

Great work Dallyn, though is it just me, or are you wearing actual headphones in that second image above?

DIY Quadcopter Kit: Drone It Yourself

Drones like Parrot’s smart quadcopters are slowly becoming popular toys. While they’re not dirt cheap, they’re very stable, easy to pilot and some of them even have cameras or can be fitted with one. But what if you could turn anything into a drone? That’s exactly what Jasper Van Loenen set out to do when he made Drone It Yourself.

drone it yourself kit by jasper van loenen

Yep, that’s a bicycle rim drone. The kit consists of four propellers driven by ESC motors, four C-clamps, a Bluetooth module, a receiver and an OpenPilot flight controller. All of these parts fit neatly in a custom briefcase, but the resulting drone isn’t always pretty. Actually you know what? These makeshift drones are beyond pretty. Watch the rim, a keyboard and more take flight:

Needs more R. Kelly. Tinkerers can head to Jasper’s website to download the 3D files for the printed parts.

Mealku Lets You Share Your Home-Cooked Meals with the World

Think you’ve got what it takes to be (insert your country of origin here)’s top chef? You might not have your own cooking show or the chance to join some cooking competition, but you can serve people with your signature dishes and earn points (and even cash) while you’re at it.

This is only made possible by Mealku, a homemade meal cooperative.

mealku 1

Mealku operates from NYC but according to their website, the concept can be “introduced wherever people gather.” So here’s how it works: you post meals to earn Ku points, and you order meals to spend Ku points. Accumulate a hundred Ku or more in a month and you get $30 cash back. Each 250 Ku and you get $100 back. There are a bunch of other ways to earn Ku, like reviewing dishes and referring other people to the site. In terms of the meals, Mealku takes care of picking up the food containers and delivering them to other members of the co-op. In addition, Mealku reviews home cooks for cleanliness and proper food sanitation before allowing them into the cooperative.

You might not turn in a hefty profit after all that cooking, but think of it as a reimbursement for the ingredients that you used to put together meals that probably made other people’s day.

Interested? You can head on over to Mealku.com for more information.

(No)where (Now)here Dresses Light Up and Move When You Look At Them

Some dresses have designs that are so unusual that you can’t help but stare at them. These two dresses designed by Ying Gao in collaboration with robotics designer Simon Laroche definitely will draw attention.

light up dresses

These interactive pieces of clothing, titled (no)where (now)here are equipped with eye-tracking technology so that they literally come alive when someone’s looking at them. Tiny motors are activated to set off wave-like motions all over the dresses, while the photoluminescent thread gives the dresses a distinctive glow.

The design is complicated but beautiful, and the concept intriguing.

The artist’s statement reads: “A photograph is said to be ‘spoiled’ by blinking eyes – here however, the concept of presence and of disappearance are questioned, as the experience of chiaroscuro (clarity/obscurity) is achieved through an unfixed gaze.”

Een Maal is the World’s First One-Person Restaurant

Many people are uncomfortable with the prospect or even just the idea of eating alone at a restaurant. I’d like to say that I’m so confident that I can’t relate to this feeling, but I can’t, because I do. There’s just something about eating alone that feels so… lonely. Maybe movies and other media have reinforced that idea in our heads, but social designer and initiator Marina van Goor disagrees with the concept and isn’t afraid to say so.

Een Maal One Person Restaurant

Goor set up the pop-up Eenmaal restaurant last Thursday in Amsterdam, and what sets it apart is that it’s the world’s first restaurant that serves parties of one exclusively. Inside, you’ll find tables with a single setting arranged all over the restaurant, which means that diners can only dine alone and with themselves only.

Een Maal One Person Restaurant1

Goor explains: “Eenmaal is a restaurant like any other restaurant, but one thing is totally different: you only find tables for one person here. Eenmaal is an exciting experiment for those who never go out dining alone, as well as an appealing opportunity for those who often eat alone at restaurants.”

It’s a fun concept, and it’s just too bad that Eenmaal was only open for two days.

Game of Thrones Toilet Paper Holder, Wiping is Coming

No matter which house you are a part of in Westeros – Lannister, Stark, Greyjoy, Targaryen… They all eventually have to poop. Forget fighting for the Iron Throne. It’s not even a comfortable seat. This Throne of Rolls on the other hand is worth battling over.

You will never run out of toilet paper sitting on this throne. Though it’s not too comfortable. After all, a king must never rest easy. This amusing toilet paper roll holder was made by Instructables member fjanse. He built it from toy swords, brush handles, a shield, and a base meant to hold toilet rolls.

Dexter Morgan Served on a Slab – in Cake Form

Prepare your kill room. Lay down some plastic sheets and get your boat ready to ditch the evidence. You’ve got cake to eat. A cake that looks like Dexter Morgan.

To celebrate the start of the final season of Dexter, Miss Cakehead and Conjurers Kitchen created this epic cake for the guys at FOX. It is a pretty realistic and creepy Dexter Morgan head – baked to scale.

This cake shares the name of Dexter’s boat “A Slice of Life”. Get it? The entire cake started out measuring 5ft 10” long, the same height as Michael C. Hall, the actor who plays Dexter. But the rest of the kill was disposed of, presumably from the boat. The whole cake took over 100 hours to make and weighed over 105 kilograms.

It was made with 24 eggs, 25 kilograms of flour, 16 kilograms of buttercream, 18 kilograms of sugar, 20 kilograms of sugar paste and marzipan. And 20 blood oranges. An awesome cake for an awesome series. Though it should have been blood red on the inside.

Ben Heck Bakes a Raspberry Pi Portable

We’ve seen a small arcade machine that can be powered by a Raspberry Pi. Master modder Ben Heck decided to make an even tinier version of the tiny computer and put it in a custom case with buttons, turning it into a portable gaming device.

Aside from a Raspberry Pi, Ben Heck also used a 3.5″ LCD screen, a Teensy board, a couple of Li-ion batteries and some buttons from a Logitech gamepad.

Then he 3D printed a case, wired everything together and installed MAME on the Pi. You can skip to around 15:10 in the video below to see it working:

Can we just sit back for a minute and process what we saw? He made a freakin’ gaming device. On his own. This guy. This Ben Heck guy. He is quite the guy. If you have the same godly capabilities, head to Thingiverse to get the files you need to 3D print the case.

Sushi Tanks Ready to Wage War on Hunger

I love good sushi. Since I’m land-locked in the Midwest, it’s not exactly easy to get good fresh sushi-grade fish here, but there are definitely some places that fly it in daily at least. Still, I haven’t seen any sushi joint around here who serves it this way…

sushi tank 1

Yes, that’s a tank made of raw fish, rice and seaweed.

I certainly wouldn’t want to be on the business end of a slice of cucumber, would you? Though if the ammo is made from smoky salmon roe, I suppose I could handle it. Just don’t come at me with that shrimp turret – unless you want to see me go into anaphylactic shock.

These tank-shaped sushi plates were made by a Kurisakiya as a tribute to the anime Girls und PanzerWhy? Because in Japan, anything is possible!

Creepy Piranha Plant: Kill it With Fire Flower!

I haven’t played The Last of Us yet, but I think if you crossed that game with Super Mario Bros. this would be one of its enemies. This gruesome sculpture came from the talented hands and twisted mind of Karen aka Dogzillalives. Karen said it’s made of “polymer clay, acrylic paint, matte and gloss varnishes.” I’m not sure I believe her.

She actually just calls it “Medium plant guy.” I don’t even want to know what Large plant guy looks like. Check out her deviantART page and her Etsy shop if your stomach isn’t empty yet.
