iRobot Ava 500 Video Collaboration Robot : A Roomba with a View

The company that became known for its humble robots for cleaning homes will soon be selling a fancy robot for offices. Coming in 2014, iRobot’s Ava 500 will let you work both remotely and on site. It has a 21.5″ HD screen, a webcam, a microphone and its predecessor’s ability to find its way around on its own. Depending on your office dynamics, the Ava 500 will either be a hilarious or a creepy sight.

irobot ava 500

According to iRobot, the Ava 500 can explore and map its assigned area on its own. The idea is for its user to direct it remotely using an iPad app. You just have to pick the robot’s destination and it will figure out how to get there on its own. So no, you won’t be able to “drive’ it and yes, it’s still pretty impressive.

Aside from the iPad app, iRobot says it will provide users with Cisco TelePresence EX60 monitors. The Ava 500 can also adjust its body’s height so that its monitor will be at the appropriate level at all times. When you’re done using the Ava 500, it will return to its charging station on its own. It’ll probably chat with the other ‘bots about that cute copier and how annoying that security cam dude is.

I wonder how many takes that meeting scene took. If I was there I wouldn’t be able to stop laughing when the robot rolls in the room. He looks constipated. And can you imagine a future where the only “employees” in the office are all Ava 500s? The Ava 500s will be so busy they’ll have to use other Ava 500s to do their job.

Chewbacca Has a Run in with the TSA

Man, the TSA can suck. Who knew that going from point A to point B would ever become such a nightmare. Yeah, this isn’t the same country that many of us grew up in. Our rights mean very little these days it seems. And when they harass the likes of Chewbacca, they have finally gone too far.

peter mayhew

For one thing a Wookiee can rip your arms out of it’s socket. For another, when you harass 69-year-old Peter Mayhew, the actor who played Chewbacca, you will piss off a whole planetful of geeks. The man was just trying to get his large lightsaber cane and be on his way while traveling after attending Denver Comic Con.

Apparently having the incident tweeted encouraged them to release the cane. Wise move TSA. Now go grope Jar-Jar. BTW, how awesome is it that he has a lightsaber cane?

VelociRoACH Hits the Ground Running… and Raid Won’t Stop It

Remember that Tom Selleck sci-fi flick called Runaway? Despite being terribly cheesy, those insect-like robots in that movie always gave me the creeps. Never mind that it was none other than KISS’ Gene Simmons who was the mastermind behind the robobugs.

While this robotic insect isn’t deadly, you’ll have a really hard time catching and swatting it if it ever were to go rogue.

velociroach

Created by Duncan W. Haldane, Kevin C. Peterson, Fernando L. Garcia Bermudez, and Ronald S. Fearing of the UC Berkeley Biomimetic Millisystems Lab, the VelociRoACH is claimed to be the fastest legged robot relative to its body size. It’s capable of running at a zippy 2.7 meters-per-second. Yikes. Just wait till about 10 seconds into the video below to see it scurrying along in real time.

The robot was built with a new dynamic tuning system which keeps it stable at high speeds, using an aerodynamic rotational damper which is designed to operate with less rotational energy while still maintaining crazy fast forward momentum. The robot is also equipped with a mechanism which lets it crawl over obstacles about twice its height with ease.

I’m not sure what the real-world applications from the VelociRoACH are, but I sure wouldn’t want these running around my house.

Fiat 500s Turned into Refrigerators: Cool Cars, Literally.

European automobile maker Fiat has teamed up with appliance company Smeg to create some awesome retro refrigerators out of old cars. They’re basically finding classic Fiat 500s, cutting off the front ends, gutting the insides, and turning them into the coolest fridges ever.

It’s sad that all these cars are being chopped up, but the resulting refrigerators look pretty darn cute, so it is hard to be too mad at them. The instrument panel is still inside, though it’s not exactly where you’d expect to find it. You can use it to adjust the temperature.

The “Smeg 500s” are coming soon and will be available in white, red and green. We don’t have any word on pricing, but I’m sure they won’t be cheap. Who wants one?

Furby Living Turns Pop Icons into Freaky Furbies

My mom never got me a Furby when I was a kid, and now I understand why. Those things look freaky–and definitely not in a good way. I know some people think they’re the most adorable things in the world, but their huge bug eyes really up their creepiness factor for me.

They’re not as popular as they used to be, but they’re still very much present in pop culture. Furby Living is a testament to that. It’s a blog that takes album covers of some of the hottest artists today and “furbifies” them.

Furby Living

Nicki Minaj isn’t the only artist who got furbified, as Lady Gaga, Adele, Justin Bieber, Christina Aguilera, and a whole host of others got the same treatment as well.

You can check them out in the gallery below.

I like Furbies better already. But not enough to get an actual one, though.

Street Legal Bumper Car for Sale: Bumping Not Permitted

Now this is a real low-rider. If you have ever wished you could drive your own street legal bumper car down the road, your dreams could come true. This beauty that you see here is for sale.

bumper car
Just keep in mind that while it is legal to drive this on the road, it is not legal to ram the other cars. This 1984 Dodge Colt does a great impression of a bumper car. It’s on eBay right now for $1,980(USD) with the reserve not yet met. What are you waiting for?

It doesn’t appear that it would function as a bumper car, but hey, you can’t have it all.

Tumbler Tractor: Uncle Batman Had a Farm…

Now I’m no expert on agriculture, but I didn’t know that Gotham had any farms left. Then again, the Scarecrow had to come from somewhere right? That helps to explain this kick-ass tractor that looks like it came from Wayne Industries, right alongside the Tumbler we all know and love.

batman tractor
This tractor was built in the Netherlands, and it just happens to look like the Dark Knight’s tumbler. I’m sure it’s just a coincidence. Yeah. That’s all. This guy probably doesn’t have a Batcave and talk in a gravelly voice. At least that’s Lucius Fox told me.

He is not at all preparing armor, along with a black cape and cowl to fight crime in the Netherlands. Nah. That’s just crazy. So crazy it just might work.

Tetris Printer: Puzzling Pixel Portraits

Have you ever accidentally formed a shape or a letter while playing Tetris? Felt swell did you? As always, the Internet is here to remind you that other people are much more awesome than your are. First up is Michael Birken, who wrote a software algorithm that can draw a portrait by playing a modified version of Tetris.

tetris printer by michael birken

As I mentioned above, Birken’s Tetris Printer algorithm needs to use a custom variant of Tetris. The game field is bigger and the algorithm also controls the sequence of pieces. But it’s still very remarkable because it actually plays by the rule of the game, i.e. if it forms a horizontal line, that line is wiped out and so on. That means it has to go through ridiculously tedious methods to accomplish the simplest of tasks.

For instance, all tetrominoes are made of four blocks. So what if it only needs to “draw” one block? Birken states, “To generate an individual square, the algorithm assembles a structure consisting of a rectangular region fully supported by a single square protruding from the bottom. When the rectangular region is completed, its rows are cleared, leaving behind the protruding square.”

You can head to Birken’s website for his full explanation and the source code of Tetris Printer. Or just play the video below and enjoy the result:

Surely such precise manipulations can only be done by machines and their cold logic. WRONG. YouTuber John Schuepbach aka Shuey187 is the human equivalent of the Tetris Printer. As in, he doesn’t know which pieces will come out. He just plays and plays and plays, taking each little opportunity the game gives him so he can impose his will on the game’s relentless chaos. In fact, he’s been doing this way before Birken ever came up with his algorithm. Here he is painstakingly drawing Mario:

That took him 90 minutes and he wasn’t even able to complete Mario’s hat. But holy crap. What’s next? Printing in a Tetris game in a Minecraft game in an emulator in Garry’s Mod?

Domino’s Drone Delivers Pizza: Is That Delivery or Di-dron-o?

It looks like Domino’s Pizza is at it again. A few weeks back they started renting DVDs in Brazil that smell like pizza when they get hot. Now here they are delivering pizza using drones. Maybe the upcoming robot apocalypse isn’t so bad after all. What’s the worst that could happen? Your pizza gets cold in the air? It takes an extreme bank and your cheese and toppings slide off?

dominos pizza drone
I guess a Pizza Hut drone could always fire lasers at the Domino’s drone and scatter your pizza across the winds, causing pepperoni showers in your local weather report. Begun, the pizza drone wars have!

Of course the pizza drone is all a publicity stunt, but the important thing is that it can be done. Screw human contact. Drones can bring you food, and won’t talk back if you undertip them. Though they might kill you.

Points Electronic Directional Sign: Street Signs Are Headed This Way

In the age of mobile devices and Google Maps, will street signs soon become obsolete? Not if they turn into Points. Points is an electronic directional sign that does more than just point to nearby landmarks. It can act as a weatherman, a news ticker, a Twitter feed and more.

points sign by breakfast ny

Points was invented by Breakfast NY, the same organization behind the Instagram-printing machine. As you’ll see in the video below, Points has a control panel near its base. The panel has buttons that people can use to select what type of information they want to see. Points updates not just its directional arms but also the choices on the control panel. For instance, the choices in the morning will differ from the selections at night to reflect our habits.

Right now Breakfast NY is offering Points units for rent at events. They’re still working on a weatherproof version that can be sold for permanent installation. Head to Breakfast NY’s website to inquire about renting the sign, learn more about what makes Points work and even interact with a Points sign using Twitter.

I think Points is a very cool product, but I think an augmented reality sign would be more useful and practical. You can’t really expect people to form a line behind Points and wait for others to finish faffing about and gawking at the robot sign so they can use the control panel and find out where the nearest restroom is. Or. They might be prompted to do something drastic like, I don’t know, ask another human being for directions. Now imagine if you had a Points app on your Google contact lens or Apple holo-watch. You say Okay Glass Siri simply think of your question, and your device overlays the answer over the sign or over any surface for that matter.

But all this shallow brainstorming and ranting on my part only emphasizes what impresses me most about what Breakfast NY has done: Points looks like it was stolen from a street in the Tron system, but it’s here and it works.
