Vintage Execution Arcade Machine: Hangman, Anyone?

I’ve seen some strange stuff over the years, but this has to take the cake as the most unusual arcade machine I’ve ever seen.

the execution arcade machine

This rare vintage penny arcade machine simulates an execution. Just put in your coin, and a tiny hanging will be performed, as a bell rings out and a little figure is dropped through the gallows. Delightful fun!

The machine originally took British pennies, but was modified to accept U.S. quarters at some point.

This rare machine was created by Charles Ahrens, and is currently for sale over on eBay, with a Buy-it-Now price of $17,499.99(USD).

Is it just me, or does this thing seem like something you’d find as you wander around Columbia in Bioshock Infinite, somewhere between the vending machines and the kinetoscopes.

Girl Makes Ziploc Bag Jacket, Vows to Never Be Hungry Again

You’ve probably run into the old problem of where to keep your spare slice of pizza, or that half-eaten sandwich when you are out and about. You can’t put them into your pocket because that’s just nasty. You don’t want a sandwich full of lint! Well, one girl has solved the problem with a Ziploc jacket.

This Ziploc Jacket keeps all of your food items in plain view and keeps it all fresh. You are basically a walking food cart when wearing this thing. And it’s stylish too.

Want a mohair look? Just fill up all the pockets and let things get moldy! In the mood for red? Fill it up with tomato sauce! Damn. This thing is versatile.

Lenticular Lens Trick Creates Child Abuse Ads That Only Children Can See

I think it’s safe to say that most adults know what constitutes child abuse. Unfortunately, the same thing can’t be said for children, who might think that what they’re being subjected to is normal. The ANAR Foundation and Grey Group Spain are hoping to change that, though, with the launch of an ad campaign that uses lenticular printing.

In this particular application, This printing technique lets individuals see different images based on their height.

lenticular ad

Adults will see a plain poster of a boy captioned with “Sometimes child abuse is only visible to the child suffering it.” On the other hand, the version children will see is that of a bruised and battered boy, captioned with “If somebody hurts you, phone us and we’ll help you,” followed by a hotline number.

Hopefully, this can make kids aware of their situation and encourage them to seek help without fear of repercussions from an aggressor.

Robot Scales Walls with Sticky Plastic Feet

A team of researchers in Switzerland have been working on a new robot that’s able to climb vertical surfaces of all sorts using unique sticky feet. The robot can climb all sorts of surfaces including walls, rock, aluminum, and others. The developers behind the robot believe it could be used to help with mountain rescues, construction crews, or painting walls and ceilings.

The wall climbing ‘bot was developed by Liyu Wang, Lina Graber and Fumiya Iida at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich.

The robot is able to cling to vertical surfaces using special plastic footpads that heat rapidly causing them to melt. When the plastic melts, the compound slimes into the nooks and crannies on the surface it’s climbing allowing it to stick. The robot then uses thermoelectric effect to cool the plastic allowing the foot to release so a step can be taken. The adhesives in the plastic feet melt at about 70°C.

While sticky feet made of melting plastic may not sound particularly strong, the researchers claim that the robot can carry five times its own mass up a vertical wall.

Guillotine Simulator: Sims are Getting Weirder & Weirder

Man, the people who got their hands on the Oculus Rift are really desperate for something to play on their new toy. We already saw someone make a Virtual Boy emulator for the Rift, and now here’s an experience for head-mounted display about not having your head mounted on your neck anymore.

guillotine simulator

The program is called Disunion. I can’t really call it a game, because it doesn’t seem to accept any input from the “player.” It’s a guillotine simulator and all you can do is wait and look around. I think that pretty much sums up the options left to the victim in such an event.

Disunion was made by Erkki Trummal, André Berlemont and Morten Brunbjerg during the Exile Game Jam. You can download a Windows build of Disunion on Unicorn7. I wonder if it lets you look at your body after you’ve been decapitated. At that point you’ll have a first- and third-person perspective at the same time.

Steampunk Nintendo Controller Coffee Table: NESSSS

Here’s a coffee table that would go well with the steampunk NES. It was made by Charles Lushear of Bohemian Workbench using found items. I wouldn’t disagree if you think it’s more junkyard than steampunk, but either way it’s an impressive piece.

The cedar wood tabletop used to be part of a fence, the A and B buttons are antique clock movements and the Start and Select buttons are vintage rifle magazines. But the most intriguing part is the directional pad.

Apparently that piece of metal is a Katanga cross or a handa, a copper cross that was used as a form of currency in the Democratic Republic of Congo from the 19th to the 20th century. Katanga Katanga cross, y’all.

Lushear is selling it on his Etsy shop for $2,600 (USD). That’s a lot of Katanga crosses.

Poutine-Flavored Soda is for People With Iron Stomachs

Have you ever heard of poutine? No? Well, it’s a Canadian dish that’s made with french fries which have been topped with brown gravy and cheese curds. Other variations exist, but that’s basically what the dish is.

Doesn’t sound very appetizing, does it? It probably has a certain appeal, though, since has been around since the late 1950s. Now take that dish and imagine it as a drink… then take a sip of Seattle-based Jones Soda’s Poutine Soda and see if it matches your imagination or expectations.

Poutine Drink

Jones Soda describes the drink as having “a nice balance of rich, savory gravy over a starchy potato base, and accented with those fatty, cheesy notes you expect in a plate of poutine.”

I haven’t tried it myself, but others have, and I’ll leave you to gauge how good or bad it was based on their reactions:

Sushi Cats – Because, Japan.

Cats have always had their place in history. The Ancient Egyptians regaled them as sacred deities and they were much-loved pets during the Chinese Song Dynasty. The close relationship that cats have with man continues up until today, where felines feel free to express their emotions (hello Grumpy Cat) and are spoiled rotten (have you seen this or this?)

Then along came the Sushi Cats.

Sushi Cats

Contrary to what the title will have you believe, Sushi Cats is not some new exotic dish on the menu. Rather, it’s a quirky photo series featuring adorable and cuddly cats that are dressed to the nines as sushi – and not just the edible kind, since some of them are topped with accessories and random objects like a handbag, knitting needles, a tie, and even cold hard cash.

Sushi Cats was created by Japan’s Tange & Nakimushi Peanuts and they’re available as photo prints, post cards, and fans in the company’s online store, although they only ship within Japan.

They even put together a couple of humorous videos detailing the history and the adventures of the Sushi Cats…

If you live outside of Japan, fret not. Tange & Nakimushi Peanuts love the cats so much that they launched an mobile game app featuring none other than the felines themselves. You can download the Sushi Cats app for iOS here and for Android here.

Dance Floor That Generates Electricity: Party Power

A Dutch company called Energy Floors has invented a product that turns club patrons into portable generators. The company’s Sustainable Dance Floors are tiles that generate electricity when they’re stepped on. It really makes me wonder why they’re not more widely used, as the company released it in 2008.

Each tile has a small generator inside. When the tile is stepped on, it flexes and drops by 10mm. The generator uses each flex to create electricity, which can either be used directly by its LEDs or stored elsewhere.

Here’s a short feature about the Sustainable Dance Floor uploaded by BCHydroPowerSmart:

You can contact Energy Floors on its website if you want to rent or purchase their product. According to their site the tiles have been used in many events around the world and are permanently installed in 17 locations. Perhaps wealthy people wouldn’t object to giving back to the less fortunate if all they had to do was dance their asses off. Seriously though wouldn’t it be awesome if they were installed everywhere?

Chinese Worker Builds Giant Motorcycle So Big It Needs Training Wheels

While I really enjoy the occasional ATV or Jet-Ski ride, and regularly ride my bicycle, I have to say I’ve never been all that comfortable riding a motorcycle. Maybe it’s because the first time I rode on one, I was riding on the back of the seat with a crazy person behind the handlebars, holding on for dear life. Perhaps what I need is a motorcycle with training wheels.

china huge motorcycle

That wasn’t quite what I had in mind. Have you ever seen a motorcycle that big? Yeah, me neither. This crazy bike was built in China by a sewage treatment plant worker in his spare time. He made it entirely from junkyard scrap, and drives along using tractor tires instead of regular motorcycle tires. It measures over 14-feet-long by nearly 8-feet-tall, and hits a top speed of about 25mph. It actually is big enough to carry 5 to 6 total passengers if you can believe it.

Here, check it out in action in this video clip:

Wacky, eh? I guess it needs those training wheels in the back so it doesn’t tip over. It looks ridiculously top-heavy, especially with a driver and three passengers on board. I can’t even imagine riding around with six people on this thing.
