HBO CEO Teases HBO Go-Only Subscription Service

HBO CEO Teases HBO Go Only Subscription Service

It’s undeniable one of the most popular premium cable channels to offer an online streaming video service is HBO with its HBO Go service. HBO Go allows you to not only watch recently aired shows, sometimes, being able to watch them online minutes after they’ve aired, but also catch up on complete seasons of older shows, movies and specials. Unfortunately, the only way to view HBO Go is if you’re an HBO subscriber, but that may soon change.

According to Reuters, chief executive at HBO Richard Plepler recently made some interesting comments regarding the evolution of the company’s HBO Go service at a recent premier for Game of Thrones’ third season. ”Right now we have the right model,” Plepler told Reuters. “Maybe HBO GO, with our broadband partners, could evolve.” This, of course, means the company has heard our cries for a streaming-only option for HBO Go as paying a full subscription to be able to use the service seems a little redundant. BitTorrent Intros Live Streaming Service That Makes Buffering A Thing Of The Past

BitTorrent Intros Live Streaming Service That Makes Buffering A Thing Of The Past

Torrents have been used over the years mainly as a way to effectively share content with other users who are also interested in that piece of content, using all the bandwidth of the connected parties in order to deliver that content to one another. Videos, photos, e-books and software have all be download and uploaded on torrents for years, but a new service may change how we look at torrents forever.

BitTorrent inventor Bram Cohen is announcing today a live streaming video service that he believes will revolutionize the online streaming world. BitTorrent Live allows people to stream content through BitTorrent and the more people that tune in, the better the quality becomes, which is the complete opposite of traditional online video streams.

Since the service will use those watching in order to help strengthen its broadcast, this will effectively eliminate the need for the person who is hosting the video to worry about bandwidth costs as well as infrastructure barriers. This is quite an important technology as, in theory, it could make the days of buffering online videos a thing of the past, that is, as long as there are enough people watching the same thing you are.

Vimeo on Demand lets content creators charge for videos

Vimeo, one of the top video content sharing websites, is implementing a new feature today that will allow Vimeo users with Pro accounts to sell their videos to their audience. The feature is called “Vimeo on Demand”, and content creators can choose whatever content they want to sell, whether its films, episodes, skits, anything for whatever price they want. The sellers are able to sell their content through Vimeo or their own personal website.

Vimeo on Demand lets content creators charge for videos

Content creators can set the available viewing period for their video after a Vimean purchases it. The time ranges from 24 hours to 1 year. Creators are also able to allow downloads for their videos, however, once a video is downloaded, the Vimean will be allowed to view the video whenever they want and wherever they want. Creators are also able to choose which regions their videos will be available in.

Video creators will be able to keep 90% of the revenue they generate, after the transaction fees. Vimeo will keep the remaining 10% and cover all “delivery costs”. Vimeo on Demand is another way for content creators to be able to make money off of their hard work. Vimeo introduced Tip Jar last year that let users donate money to video creators, and it launched “movies” which was the first pay-to-view experience to be featured on Vimeo.

Vimeo believes that many content creators do exceptional work with their videos and that they should be compensated for it. It’s not the only service monetizing its content. YouTube is rumored to be launching a paid content service too sometime in the Spring. Its paid content services may range from $1 to $5. With Vimeo, users are able to watch their content on their smartphone, tablets, gaming systems, and Smart TVs all in HD. Paid content services like Vimeo’s and YouTube’s are helping strengthen the advancement of Internet TV.

Koozoo turns old smartphones into streaming web cams

A new service called Koozoo has launched and promises to be the first platform dedicated to unlocking the potential of sharing live video of public places around the world. The service is able to do this using a new mobile application that runs on a network of smartphone video cameras. The idea is to create a crowd-sourced network of continuously broadcasted video that is streamed to the Internet via smartphones.

The company says that the platform will make it easy for anyone to share their view of a public place that they see outside the window, inside their business, or just about anywhere they are. The app is available to download for iPhone users now and Android smartphone users will be able to download the app soon. The service is available to join at no cost with two levels.

Basic members are able to share video from their smartphones and check other people’s video and snippets using a map-based interface. Advanced members are able to share a 24/7 live views from their home or office window using an old smartphone that isn’t in service anymore. Advanced members also will be able to access features that are under development such as time-lapse camera views and other exclusive content.

The service launched this week in San Francisco, California and Austin, Texas. The service will roll out to other major cities around the world in the coming months. The full broadcast capability is available in the two areas the service launched this week but the app is available for anyone to download and view streams.

Amazon and CBS adding additional Prime Instant Video content

Amazon recently announced they would begin streaming Stephen King’s Under The Dome, however it looks like that will not be the only CBS content coming for Prime subscribers. Coming by way of Amazon, we now have word of an expanded licensing agreement with CBS. Simply put, Prime subscribers will soon be getting quite a bit more CBS content.

under-dome-580x326

This new agreement will include a mix of CBS shows as well as Showtime series. A few of the titles will include America’s Next Top Model, Everybody Loves Raymond, Jericho, The L Word, Undercover Boss and United States of Tara. These shows come, of course, in addition to the content from the original CBS agreement from way back in July of 2011.

Current Prime subscribers are able to stream the video using a Kindle Fire or Kindle Fire HD as well as on one of the many supported game consoles. Amazon also has a Prime Instant Video app available for the Roku and for iOS devices. The streaming is free for current Prime subscribers and otherwise, new users can get a free trial.

Touching back on the Under The Dome streaming for a moment and Amazon has noted that new episodes will be available for streaming four days after they air on regular television. We do have to think that this is a nice point for Amazon considering they not only have the exclusive on a new show like this, but that they are streaming it so close to the original air date. Otherwise, with these recent additions, Amazon is now touting more than 36,000 movies and TV episodes.

The New H.265 Video Format Will Help Chew Up Video So Your Network Can Swallow It

Streaming video is the future. Well, it’s the present, but the future too. And as resolutions increase, it’s going to be a tougher and tougher proposition to pipe all that data to your screen of choice in a timely fashion. Fortunately, the new H.265 standard has been approved by the ITU and it’s here to help. More »

More details emerge on Netflix’s abandoned hardware effort, Project Griffin

Fast Company offers more details on Netflix's abandoned hardware effort

Netflix’s ultimately abandoned foray into the hardware business with its own streaming device has been known for some time — Wired revealed many of the details in a 2009 article — but Fast Company has now uncovered some more on the effort that hadn’t yet seen the light of day. That includes the actual name Netflix was using for it, Project Griffin (apparently inspired by Tim Robbins’ character in The Player), and a newly-revealed internal video that offers a look at the device itself (and detour to Foxconn that Netflix would no doubt have preferred remained internal).

Despite what was said to be enthusiasm for it at the company, the set-top box would be shelved just weeks before launch and instead spun out to Roku, which released a strikingly similar-looking device itself — Frog Design is said to have worked with Netflix on the original design. Netflix would then quickly move on to partnerships with LG and other companies on their boxes in place of its own branded device. As for the reason for the change in plans, one source said to be at a high-level tells Fast Company that Reed Hastings once said that “I want to be able to call Steve Jobs and talk to him about putting Netflix on Apple TV,” adding, “but if I’m making my own hardware, Steve’s not going to take my call.” You can see the full internal video after the break.
