Netflix, Pandora confirmed as content partners for Chromecast streaming

Netflix, Pandora confirmed as content partners for Chromecast streaming

Google’s taking another big stab at the TV market with its just-announced Chromecast HDMI streaming solution, and it’s naturally lined up some content partners to make that device more useful. At its event today, the company confirmed that Netflix is on board with video streaming support from its Android and iOS apps; Chromecast buyers will also get three months of Netflix for free “for a limited time” with their purchase (notably, that includes existing Netflix members). On the audio side of things, you’ll also be able to take advantage of music streaming courtesy of Pandora, which is apparently coming sometime after launch according to Google’s blog post. Less surprisingly, YouTube, Google Play Movies & TV, and the Play Music app will also be offering full support for the device, letting you push videos and music to your TV (and the sound system attached to it) from your mobile device of choice. Additional content partners are said to be “coming soon.”

Intel may launch internet TV service using OnCue name

Intel may launch TV service under OnCue name

Intel has been open with its plans to introduce an internet-based TV service, but many of the details remain up in the air — not the least of which is the name. However, GigaOM has done sleuthing that suggests the offering could be called OnCue. A reported shell company for Intel, Sest, has registered trademarks that include the OnCue title, a logo and a “TV has come to its senses” slogan. Simultaneously, an employee at the marketing agency OMD claims to have worked on the OnCue launch. Intel isn’t commenting on the apparent discoveries, but we wouldn’t count on the trademarks arriving in tandem with a product. When the company is taking a very cautious approach to entering the internet TV field, there’s a chance that the names will be all we ever see.

Sony to offer UltraViolet movies in France and Germany starting late September

Sony to offer UltraViolet access to Germany in September, France in the fall

To use UltraViolet these days, you have to live in one of a few English-speaking countries. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will change that soon: the company just teased its plans for the digital locker service in mainland Europe. According to the firm’s David Bishop, Germans will get cloud access to Sony movies in late September — possibly September 30th, as DECE hinted in April — while the French will have their turn sometime in the fall. Neither Sony nor other studios have provided additional launch dates, although we know that neighboring countries like Belgium and the Netherlands should be next on the list.

Sony’s Crackle arrives on BlackBerry 10, reminds us to not watch Bad Boys II

Sony's Crackle arrives on BlackBerry 10, reminds us to not watch Bad Boys II

Slowly, but steadily, BlackBerry’s building its BB10 app catalog with some major gets. Today, that burgeoning list grows by a very important one with the addition of Sony’s Crackle. The free, ad-based streaming video service, which culls together content from Sony’s various TV and film studios, is available to download now from BlackBerry World. It’s also compatible with the Q10’s teeny, 3.1-inch screen, so if you hate your good eyesight, you can devote an hour or two to reliving the opus that is Bad Boys II. Sure, popular apps like Instagram, Hulu Plus and Netflix have yet to make their way over to BB10, but you can’t fault the Waterloo-based outfit for getting users what it can. Even if that means bringing them Bad Boys II.

Flixster for BlackBerry 10 adds UltraViolet movie streaming

Flixster for BlackBerry 10 adds UltraViolet movie streaming

BlackBerry 10 users have had Flixster’s app as a movie guide since January, but they haven’t had the chance to watch their discoveries on the BlackBerry itself. Thankfully, Flixster has provided that missing piece of the puzzle today by adding UltraViolet support (not pictured here). As with Android and iOS, anyone with a BB10 device can now stream videos saved in their UV locker. The upgrade brings regular Flixster accounts, too — members can mark the movies they want to see and review them afterward. Between these two major additions, the new Flixster app is easily worth an update at the source link.

Netflix lands multi-year subscription exclusive for New Girl

Netflix lands multiyear streaming exclusive for New Girl

While Netflix has scored some coups in original content, it has arguably been slacking on deals for conventional TV shows — Amazon has landed numerous exclusives on that front in recent months. Netflix may be making up for lost time, however, with a multi-year subscription exclusive in the US for Fox’s New Girl. Effective immediately, customers can stream the Zooey Deschanel comedy’s first season; further seasons will come online as they finish their initial TV runs. We doubt that New Girl by itself will lead to many converts from other services, but its presence on Netflix proves that Amazon can’t let its guard down.

Vine for Android gets front camera support, upload manager

Vine for Android gets front camera support, upload manager

Twitter is certainly making up for lost time on Android — just a few days after it upgraded Vine to address some early omissions, it’s back with another round of improvements for the Google-inclined. The just-posted Vine 1.2 update for Android brings front camera access for those inevitable selfie videos. It also brings an upload manager for backlogged clips, settings tweaks and a fresh wave of performance boosts. The new version may not lure back Android users who’ve switched allegiance to Instagram, but those who still prefer Twitter’s approach can grab Vine 1.2 at Google Play.

Sky adding more on demand content, revamping Go apps for summer

Sky adding more on demand content, revamping Go apps for summer

Lounging around in the sun is great and all, but what to do on a rainy day? One option is to get some TV time in, and Sky’s got a few updates to share that might tempt you in front of a screen on dreary afternoons. At some point this summer, shows from Fox, Universal and SyFy will be available on Sky’s On Demand service, as well as content from Disney if you’re signed up for the Entertainment Extra package. Mobile apps will be getting a makeover, with “enhanced navigation” and a new design including bigger thumbnails when cruising through the VOD library. The Sky Go Xbox 360 app will also be updated to bring it in line with Microsoft’s UI style. Furthermore, Sky Multiroom subscribers will get access to Sky Go Extra, which allows you to download content in addition to streaming, at no extra cost in early July. Vitamin D’s overrated anyways.

Discovery launches trio of TV streaming apps for Windows Phone

Discovery launches TV streaming apps for Windows Phone

Windows Phone 8 users whose TV habits revolve around MythBusters, Cake Boss and cute pets are in luck: Discovery has just posted three apps for their platform of choice. The new Animal Planet, Discovery Channel and TLC releases share the same basic template, letting fans check show schedules and stream either brief clips or a smattering of full-length episodes. All of the apps support Windows Phone’s live tiles, voice commands and calendar reminders, although they’re otherwise simple; they lack the second screen features we’ve seen in iOS versions. If you’re just hoping to watch some Auction Kings on the bus, however, you can get your fix through the Windows Phone store today.
