We’ve already had a meteorite shower to remind us that Earth is just a small part of a much, much larger universe. If that wasn’t enough perspective for you, PBS is offering a follow-up through NOVA‘s newly streaming “Earth From Space” documentary. The two-hour show illustrates how our planet’s individual climates and ecosystems are really part of one larger unit, with ripple effects that we didn’t always anticipate until an abundance of earth observation satellites made them clear. You’ll have to be an American to watch before the documentary, at least before it arrives in disc form on April 2nd. Every Earth citizen can still watch the trailer after the break.

Amazon expands CBS content on Prime Instant Video, lands an Under the Dome exclusive

Amazon only managed to land a slice of CBS’ library for Prime Instant Video on the first pass; it’s coming back for a second helping, including one of its first cracks at genuinely recent content from the network. A widened licensing deal gives subscribers access to further CBS and Showtime series that include Jericho, The L Word and an unspecified number of other shows. And for those intrigued by the broadcaster’s upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s Under the Dome, Amazon will be the only choice for many viewers: Prime Instant Video will be the exclusive home for subscription streaming and purchased downloads of the series, delivering streaming episodes about four days after their air date in order to shelter CBS’ traditional advertisers. Amazon may not have have completely locked in an audience between this and the Downton Abbey deal, but the recent set of exclusives is likely to leave Netflix feeling nervous.

Netflix and DreamWorks launch original show for kids

While Netflix is trying to lure in the grown-ups with the launch of House of Cards, it’s not leaving kids without their own choice of original material. DreamWorks plans to follow up the July release of its animated movie Turbo with a Netflix-only series, Turbo FAST, in December. The episodes will arrive on the service roughly in line with DreamWorks’ 2013 slate of movies, including Turbo. Young viewers may well be happy, but Turbo FAST and the larger DreamWorks deal could be that much more satisfying for Netflix itself — they’re potential foils to Amazon’s multi-show plans that could keep some subscribing families from jumping ship.

Tesco experiments with free movie and TV streaming for Clubcard members

Brits who shop enough at Tesco to be on a first name basis with the clerks may soon have a reward that doesn’t require leaving home. The UK retail chain is currently testing Clubcard TV, a web-based movie and TV streaming hub that would be a free perk of Clubcard membership. As it exists in beta form, the Blinkbox-derived service won’t have Lovefilm or Netflix quaking in their boots: there’s a limited slate of mostly family-oriented fare, and Tesco’s notion of TV streaming involves the video output on a laptop. While neither is an issue as long as the trial is limited to staff, we hope there’s a richer platform by the time Clubcard TV is open to anyone with a lot of grocery shopping in mind.

It’s not quite as traditional as baseball and apple pie, but you’ve got to start somewhere. Following last year’s success, Google is once again hosting a Presidential Google+ chat days after the State of the Union address, on February 14th at 4:50PM Eastern. The Fireside Hangout will see President Obama answer the most voted-for questions from Americans live, with a seasoned panel joining him for the discussion. It’s arguably one of our better chances at getting answers about policies that we wouldn’t get from a formal speech — as such, those who can put aside nostalgia for old-fashioned Fireside Chats will likely get their fill at the source link.

BBC to try offering shows on iPlayer before TV

We’ve clearly crossed a psychological barrier to digital media adoption when major content providers are going online-first on a regular basis. The BBC, despite its sometimes stuffy image, is revealing that it’s just as eager to break with tradition: it’s been given the go-ahead for a trial that will offer content on iPlayer before it appears on TV. The year-long test will offer up to 40 hours of regular BBC shows in advance, with no TV license fee required. While the selection of shows isn’t yet public, the offering should be a bolder experiment than usual in showing whether or not iPlayer can serve as more than a catch-up tool or repository for exclusives. Let’s hope it does — we’d like to see online services treated as first-class citizens.

DNP AT&T Uverse Live TV rebranded as Mobile TV, plans now starting at $10 per month

Earlier today AT&T announced the rebranding of its U-verse Live TV service, changing its name to Mobile TV. To go along with the name change, the carrier now offers direct account billing, enhanced picture quality over LTE and a slightly reduced price tag of $10 per month. In addition to Mobile TV’s stock programming from ABC Mobile, Disney, ESPN Mobile and Fox News, customers can purchase one of three premium packages for an extra $5 per month. This trio of add-ons offers kid-friendly programming, content from BET or select Spanish-language networks. So, if it’s your heart’s desire to watch reruns of Keeping up with the Kardashians on your smartphone, Android and iOS users can download AT&T’s Mobile TV app from their respective marketplace, while Windows Phone devices ship with the software pre-loaded.

Amazon scores Downton Abbey as a subscription streaming exclusive

Anyone who’s planning to catch up on Downton Abbey on their preferred service may want to plan a viewing marathon very soon: Amazon has struck a deal to become the exclusive home of the period drama on subscription-based streaming video platforms. Starting June 18th, only those Amazon Prime Instant Video members will have access to the third season and beyond on a commercial service without paying per show. The terms don’t stop there — seasons one and two will be pulled from other services later on in the year. While we’re sure Kindle Fire owners will be happy, the move won’t thrill those who want more of a choice as to how they keep up on their pseudo-historical intrigue.

Update: We’ve since gotten in touch with a source near the agreement that supports what The Verge heard: season one will disappear from Netflix on July 1st.

Blockbuster On Demand gives streaming a second chance with odd limitations

Blockbuster hasn’t had much success shifting from physical rentals to digital, even under Dish’s wing. Nonetheless, it’s betting that the umpteenth time’s the charm with a relaunch of its Blockbuster On Demand streaming movie service. The revamp ticks many of the checkboxes for a modern by-the-title rental store with 1080p and 5.1-channel surround sound as well as apps for 2012 Samsung Smart TVs, Android and Roku 2 boxes. However, there’s a number of curious choices, and we don’t just mean the omission of a subscription model. It’s missing an iOS app, emphasizes apps for desktop viewing and leaves no way to watch HD video on anything but a TV — our mobile and PC screens have advanced in the past several years, Blockbuster. Idiosyncrasies notwithstanding, the rebirth presents more of a unified front than the one-time giant has offered in the past.

Amazon greenlights five kids shows, assures that parents will never see their Kindle Fires again

Amazon’s officially pumped its original programming push up to 11. The mega-retailer’s studio has just green-lit five kids series, enlisting the help of some of the industry’s top creators. The list includes Teeny Tiny Dogs, produced by The Jim Henson Company, Creative Galaxy, created by Blues Clues‘ Angela Santomero and Oz Adventures, based on the classic L. Frank Baum books. Once production is wrapped, the shows will be available for free on Amazon Instant Video, Prime Instant Video, Lovefilm UK and Lovefilm Germany.
