Griffin kid-friendly accessories explode upon CES 2013

This week the folks at Griffin are sure to bring on more than just a couple of their own accessories for devices of all kinds, but right at the start they’ve made it bright and colorful for the kids. Starting with an item as small as a pencil – the Capper Stylus, shaped like a rocket here in the first images we’ve got, transforms a standard pencil into a tablet-friendly stylus – how about that? Then there’s a set of Kazoo iOS cases (which you see in monkey form here for the iPhone) and frog-themed headphones – needless to say, we’ll be getting really cute with Griffin this year.

The Kazoo Heaphones you’re seeing here come in several friendly animal-shaped looks including the aforementioned frog and at least one kind of penguin, then there’s a set of iPod touch cases with every animal from an elephant to a zebra – imagine that! They’ve also worked with that fancy little lanyard connector on the iPod touch bringing you a set of charms – once again very zoo-friendly. They’ve got a set of Kazoo AUX cables coming out, each of them made to connect in just about as kid-friendly a way as possible for your kid’s audio equipment, too, with more animals on the fritz of course.

The most interesting of the releases here is the Griffin Capper Stylus, this being tablet, smartphone, or any capacitive touchscreen interface, really, friendly, made to attach to your regular standard pencil or pen. This means that your child will be learning to use a standard-sized writing utensil while they’ve still got the tablet in front of them – how handy! These come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors as well. The fun continues with Nickelodeon and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles-themed accessories, with both Griffin and Nickelodeon making a statements specifically for these new doors opening for 2013:

“Nickelodeon properties have passionate fans who are eager for products associated with their favorite shows. Partnering with Nickelodeon opens the door to tons of fun accessories modeled after the most popular characters among kids of all ages. We look forward to a long-lasting partnership, kicking off at the 2013 CES.” – Mark Rowan, President of Griffin Technology

“Nickelodeon properties have passionate fans who are eager for products associated with their favorite shows. We are excited to partner with Griffin to produce unique and trendy products to help us further expand our consumer electronics offerings.” – Manuel Torres, Senior Vice President, Global Toys and Consumer Electronics, Nickelodeon Consumer Products

sponge

This lineup begins with so much Spongebob your eyes are going to fall out. There’s an 8-bit styled iPad cases, “Faces” cases for the iPhone 5 and iPod touch (with interchangeable faces!) and a lovable SpongeBob Woogie – that’s a big stuffed animal with a special app to make it “alive”, so to speak, when you’ve got your iPhone, iPod touch – or even Android device inside! Dora the Explorer is popping up too with cases for iOS devices galore, starting with the Dora the Explorer Skin for iPod touch.

TMNT

Then comes the most awesome set of comic book characters in the history of the world, those four green-skinned heroes in a half shell that hold a special place in this humble narrator’s heart, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This brand is working with Nickelodeon at this point in history and will be rolling out with Griffin with at least one TMNT Shell for iPhone 5 and iPod touch as well as a Folio for iPad.

Stick with us all week for more action from Griffin as well as the rest of the gadget-loving universe as we traverse CES 2013. Check out our big amazing CES portal for all things hands-on as well as early release and otherwise soon-to-exist in the consumer market machines. Apple Files Stylus Patent

12 Apple logo Apple Files Stylus Patent Were you one of those who laughed at the Galaxy Note when it first arrived with a stylus? Look who’s laughing now, as Apple is said to have filed a patent with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) last week for an active stylus that they can call their own, describing the stylus in the filing this way, “the stylus includes an electrode at a tip of the stylus; and powered circuitry coupled to the electrode and configured for capacitively coupling the electrode with a capacitive touch sensor panel. The powered circuitry can further include drive circuitry configured to output a drive voltage at the electrode and/or sense circuitry configured to sense a voltage received at the electrode.”

After putting that through the Applese-English machine, it basically means that the design is able to improve stylus sensing on conductive displays without having to be expensive to manufacture. This patent was filed by a couple of employees over at Apple, namely engineering manager Jonah Harley and hardware engineering manager David Simon. And so it begins, the late Steve Jobs announced a 7-inch tablet market as “dead on arrival”, and also dismissed the stylus when the iPhone was first unveiled in 2007. I guess this means that Apple has thought otherwise now.

iPen 2 Next-Generation Stylus Is Pressure Sensitive And Angle Agnostic

ipen 2 iPen 2 Next Generation Stylus Is Pressure Sensitive And Angle Agnostic We told you about the iPen last year, praised by many as the first ever “active” stylus for the iPad. Well, fresh from its successful Kickstarter debut, its creators are now introducing its next-generation active stylus called the iPen 2. The iPen 2, however, isn’t just an upgrade to the company’s first-generation stylus. It comes in two models – an iMac model and an iPad model. The iMac model also works with glass panels running Windows OS. (more…)

Gift Guide: Ten One Design Pogo Connect iPad Stylus

giftguide-1280px-pogo-connect

Short Version

The number of options out there for iPad styli at this point is almost crazy. But Ten One Design has always made solid ones, and the Pogo Connect also adds pressure sensitivity via Bluetooth 4.0. It’s a slightly different take than others in this space, and one that benefits immensely from extremely low-power consumption.

Long Version

Features:

  • Pressure sensitive (“hundreds” of levels)
  • Magnetic replaceable tip
  • Months of use on a single AAA battery

Info:

  • 5.1 inches long
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • MSRP: $79.95
  • Available: Now
  • Product page

The Pogo Connect is…

… a pressure-sensitive stylus that you don’t need to pair, and that you don’t need to turn off. It’s almost like having a regular, dumb stylus in terms of how long it can go without juice, but with the added benefit of very good pressure sensitivity that works in a variety of apps, including Photoshop Touch and Paper by FiftyThree.

Buy the Pogo Connect for…

… any aspiring artists you know, with the condition that they also own an Apple device that can support Bluetooth 4.0, which is iPhone 4S or later, iPad 3rd generation or later, or the iPad mini. The Connect’s main benefit vs. competitors (low power, instant Bluetooth connectivity) is also its greatest limiting factor in terms of reaching a broad audience. But with every new iOS device Apple sells, that becomes less of an issue.

Because…

… while there are a number of pressure-sensitive options out there, and they mostly provide relatively similar function in terms of responsiveness and accuracy in my opinion, this is the only one that uses the power-frugal Bluetooth 4.0 standard. Ten One Design makes good products, too, and has teased upcoming interchangeable magnetic tips that means the Pogo Connect could also become upgradeable. And at $79.95, it’s also one of the cheapest options out there in this category.

Wacom outs the Bamboo Stylus feel for adequately equipped devices, ships January 7th from $40

If the regular ol’ S-Pen that arrived inside your Galaxy Note 10.1’s packaging just isn’t cutting it, Wacom is looking lend a hand with its latest offering. The outfit has announced the Bamboo Stylus feel that touts performance similar to a ball-point pen (or S-Pen) for Windows 8 and Android slates outfitted with the company’s “feel IT” pen tech. Of course, this means that these styli make use of electromagnetic signals to interact with devices, differing from their capacitive Bamboo siblings that we’ve seen. Two options are set to arrive on January 7th with replacement nibs in tow and carrying price tags of $39.95 and $79.95, respectively. The full PR resides just beyond the break should you need a few more particulars before deciding.

Sony Patents Haptic Feedback Stylus

There is nothing quite like a stylus to go along with your touchscreen device, especially if you want to get really, really productive without leaving smudges all over your display. I mean, playing the Nintendo DS when it first game out without the stylus was all passable, but your finger meant nothing when it came to games such as Trauma Center or Elite Beat Agents. Sony has come up with a new stylus which they have already filed a patent for, where it boasts of a roller design that relies on actuators to alter stylus tip resistance.

In a nutshell, this new haptic feedback stylus will not rely on the vibration method that majority of the other devices out there use, but rather, a “rolling contact ball gripping mechanism” located on the end of a stylus will use actuators so that it can increase or decrease the ball’s resistance to rolling, in essence making life easier (or harder) for the stylus to zip all over the display. We do wonder just how much the cost of such a stylus will be, and would it be that indispensable that folks are willing to fork out a (relatively) handsome amount for it?

Sony tries to patent stylus with frictionbased haptic feedback

There’s a certain disconnected feeling that comes with using a touchscreen, and Sony isn’t content with vibration being the sole standard for haptic feedback. The company has filed a bunch of patent applications for a stylus which instead uses artificially generated friction to make it harder or easier to move across the screen. It works using a “rolling contact ball gripping mechanism,” which responds to instructions from the phone or tablet and employs actuators to increase or decrease friction on the roller ball tip. The various filings outline some potential benefits of this stylus-based haptic feedback, including being able to feel yourself “carving and molding” 3D objects in a design application, or understanding your character is “fatigued or damaged” while playing a game. We know that Samsung increased the friction of the Note II’s S-Pen to make it feel more like writing on paper, but Sony’s approach would potentially bring a whole new layer of interaction.

Mixing Sharpies and Touchscreen Devices Seems Really Dangerous

Repurposing one of the myriad of writing implements on your desk as a stylus for a touchscreen device shows some clever MacGyver-like adaptability. But bringing an indelible permanent marker like a Sharpie anywhere near your tablet or smartphone’s screen is downright cringe-worthy—even if the business end is covered with one of these Stylus Caps. Satechi X-Pointer mobile presenter and Stylus Touch Pen for iPhone

You can say that a device like the iPhone has more than its fair share of accessories over the years, and this trend does not seem as though it is going to slow down anytime soon, let alone stop. Here we are with the Satechi X-Pointer mobile presenter and Stylus Touch Pen that was announced specially for the iPhone, with the former being controlled using the X-Presenter app that enables users to have the kind of unprecedented freedom, scrolling through through PowerPoint or Keynote presentation slides while ensuring the audience’s attention is directed thanks to the included red laser – like moth to a flame, you could say that.

For starters, the X-Presenter App will activate the X-Pointer’s red laser that in turn is attached to the iPhone via the smartphone’s 3.5mm jack. Not only that, the X-Presenter app is also capable of taking full control over the computer’s mouse using the app’s Mouse Mode function, turning this into an ideal all-in-one solution for business folks who are always on the go. It measures a mere 1.6 inches in length and tips the scales at just an ounce, making the X-Pointer extremely portable and mobile to be stashed away just about anywhere on your travels. Satechi is kind enough to include the Stylus Touch Pen that doubles up as a storage compartment for the X-Pointer laser whenever it is not in use, apart from being the precise touch-screen navigation tool, of course.

Apart from that, there is a rubber 3.5mm jack that you can affix the laser and pointer to the iPhone whenever the Stylus Touch Pen is not in use. Satechi has decided to make available the Satechi X-Pointer for $29.99, where you can download the X-Presenter app for free over at the Apple App Store. This is an introductory price, mind you, so we are not too sure just for how long the price point is going to remain.
