The Fulton Street Transit Center currently being built in the Financial District of Manhattan is shaping up to be not only the biggest place to catch a train in the five boroughs, but also the coolest. Where normally you’d expect the MTA to build tunnels through the ground, at Fulton Street they’ve assembled one to the sky. The MTA released a time-lapse video and a new set of photos that show a massive net lined with reflectors being installed inside the $1.4 billion dollar hub.

If there’s one thing you can count on in a large crowded city like New York, it’s that there’s always someone waiting on the subway platform. So while we love this gorgeous $48 backpack from Mojo featuring a subway door screen print that actually opens to reveal a platform, we’re left a little unsettled by the lack of passengers waiting to cram on.

Whoever said fashion and couture must be made from expensive and exotic textiles obviously haven’t laid their eyes on Subway’s newest creative marketing strategy: Project Subway. It spoofs the fashion designer reality TV show, Project Runway, and tasked contestants to come up with the best and most creative fashion designs using Subway sandwich wrappers, napkins and other packaging as their materials.
Four designers competed, and designer Danilo Gabrielli emerged victorious. It reportedly took Danilo 14 hours, spread over two weeks, to create the two Subway couture dresses that he submitted for the competition.
The campaign was launched by Subway in an attempt to encourage people to try one of their sandwiches during their September “SUBtember” footlong promotion. The cool part? Project Subway was actually a part of New York Fashion Week.

It’s a frustrating problem, but one app developer thinks he has the solution: a motion-based alarm clock that wakes you up at your stop.

When it rains it pours — and pouring rain only stops New York City’s 100-year-old mass transit system some of the time. Following its fellow carriers underground, Verizon this morning let it be know that it has inked a deal with Transit Wireless (which has already announced similar partnerships with Sprint, AT&T and the like) that’ll bring 3G and LTE voice and data to those 36 Manhattan stations that are already online, later this year. Phase two, meanwhile, will bring 40 additional stations throughout Manhattan and Queens. That part is expected to be completed early next year.
This subway map was created by Crispian Jago and it will take you on a journey through time and space as if you were traveling with the Doctor yourself. It’s all kinds of awesome with bits of amazing and fantastic thrown in too.
The colored transit lines each represent a different Doctor. All 11 of ‘em. Those stops along the way are the characters and aliens that that Doctor has met. Obviously, the Daleks show up quite a bit. This map is interactive so you can hover over the Doctors and learn about their specific timelines. You can also click on any of the species they’ve encountered in their travels to learn more about them. I have spent far too much time playing with this map today and it is super fun – even though it only takes us through the 2011 series.
