1up Mushroom Pizza Rolls: 1up My Stomach

Don’t you sometimes wish that you could just earn extra lives in real life, just like in video games? While there’s not yet a way to do that, you can still eat some tasty 1up mushrooms, thanks to our geeky food pal Chris-Rachael Oseland.

1 up mushroom pizza rolls

These 1up mushrooms aren’t just fungi from a can. Nope, they’re delicious pizza puffs made from biscuit dough and filled with pepperoni, mozzarella, onions and mushrooms. Yes, that’s right. Mushroomception. That stuff on top? Pesto, and a little green food coloring. Yum, green. It’s also got edible ball bearings for the eyes. Yum, ball bearings.

I Wish I Could Have Ate a Bit of This 8-Bit Mario Cake

I always wondered how clean it was down in those pipes where Mario would duck into. I certainly wouldn’t want to jump into some green pipe sticking out of the sidewalk. While a real sewer pipe might not be so pleasant, this one is filled with nothing but tasty goodness.

This delightful 8-bit Mario cake by I Am Ginger Pops features the pixelated likeness of the plumber peeping his head out of a green drain pipe, surrounded by some of the denizens of the Mushroom Kingdom. In all honesty, I don’t think gum paste and fondant taste all that good, but Toad looks so delicious, I want to pop him into my mouth and chomp him down this second. And forget about the cake on the inside of the pipe – it’s a dense vanilla fudge cake. Damn, that sounds so much better than lousy old 1up mushrooms.

Great job on the cake, Ginger Pops. Now how can I get one to put in my belly?

Super Mario Bros. Fan Art: It’s a-me, in HD!

deviantART member João Victor G. Costa aka JINNdev wondered what the 1985 classic Super Mario Bros. would look like if it was made today but still based on the game’s original sprites. Then he stopped thinking and started making moves. Here’s what JINNdev came up with.

The colors and the hand-drawn look are nice and remind me of Braid. At the same time in my minds eye I always see the game with blinking lights and accents, like with the question mark blocks, the coins and the star power up, so I also feel like something was lost in JINNdev’s drawing.

I wonder how it would look like in motion. Check out JINNdev’s deviantART page for the original image.

Original Super Mario Bros. Reimagined In HD

There are some games from yesteryear that get remade into HD, and while this might be a way for a developer or publisher to garner some renewed interest in the game, some gamers might feel that by making the game […]

Creepy Piranha Plant: Kill it With Fire Flower!

I haven’t played The Last of Us yet, but I think if you crossed that game with Super Mario Bros. this would be one of its enemies. This gruesome sculpture came from the talented hands and twisted mind of Karen aka Dogzillalives. Karen said it’s made of “polymer clay, acrylic paint, matte and gloss varnishes.” I’m not sure I believe her.

She actually just calls it “Medium plant guy.” I don’t even want to know what Large plant guy looks like. Check out her deviantART page and her Etsy shop if your stomach isn’t empty yet.

Super Mario Level Skulls, Your Princess is in Another Brain Cavity

If you think that playing video games for too long makes your head hurt, just imagine how these guys feel. In fact, these awesome skulls should be used as a gamer PSA. “This is your brain on Super Mario Bros.” Well, if they were human skulls. They may have been human at one time until addiction to the game mutated them to look more like Bowser’s skull.

Artist Tobias Wüstefeld from Germany sculpted these skulls which have partial levels from Super Mario Bros. on them. This is what it looks like to be addicted to Nintendo games for sure. Koopas and Goombas crawling around in your skull. Never a moment’s peace.

They will be exhibited at the We Love 8Bit Art Show this September in Berlin.

Super Mario Bros. Layer Cake, I Mean Level Cake

Forget layer cake, level cake is what it’s all about for gamers. This amazing Super Mario Bros. cake represents the water, land and sky levels from the game in amazing detail.

If I could eat this cake, I would start on the bottom with a fork, taking a big chunk that includes some fish and coins. Then I would move up to the land level for some piranha plant and goomba goodness. I’d try a coinbox too. Then it’s time to eat some vine and clouds to top it all off. Now that I’ve made a mess of the cake, no one else will want it and it will be all mine.

This cake was baked and decorated by cake maker Cakecrumbs who did an amazing job… of making me hungry. Thanks.

Server Plug-In Allows Super Mario Bros. To Be Played Within A Counter-Strike Game

Ever wonder what it might be like to play a video game within a video game? Sure there are games like that out there where they offer smaller arcade-type games within the main game itself, take StarCraft 2 for instance, but what about playing an actual console game within a game of a totally different genre and platform? If that has managed to pique your interest, the Sourcemod Entertainment System, a server plug-in for Counter-Strike, will let you do just that.

According to its creator skwumpy, the player needs to pick up a cartridge from within the game, pop it into the console, pick up a controller and you’re off to the races! Looking at the video above it’s pretty cool. The console’s switch will actually turn on, and the buttons actually depress too! Unfortunately it is a little too good to be true as Super Mario Bros. running in the console in the video had to be specifically programmed, meaning that this won’t work for any old ROM. Either way it is pretty cool so check it out in the video above.

Super Mario Spacetime Organ lets you remix the plumber’s world

Image

The game may be pushing 30, but we get the sneaking feeling that the world has only scratched the surface of the original Super Mario Bros’ gameplay potential. Chris Novello certainly offers a fairly compelling case for this, in the form of the Super Mario Spacetime organ, a strange and wonderful concoction that utilizes a homebrewed Illucia patchbay and the lovely Madrona Soundplane music controller, which let him play the Mushroom Kingdom like a musical instrument. Watch the video below as he manipulates the RAM to make Mario fly and jumps through the “Super Mario time machine” on the Soundplane’s x-axis. It’s not the most musical thing in the world, and certainly not for those who are sensitive to flickering chaos, but it does put those old Game Genies to shame. It also serves as a pretty novel use for a couple of rubber band balls.
