Microsoft Surface Pro 2 Firmware Update Improves Battery Life Significantly

Microsoft Surface Pro 2 Firmware Update Improves Battery Life Significantly

Back in September Microsoft unveiled its next generation Surface tablets, the Surface 2 and the Surface Pro 2. Both tablets were released to the public on October 22nd. Soon after the Surface Pro 2 became available, Microsoft released a firmware update for the tablet. The update was meant to improve battery life, and it did so by quite a margin. Basically, through the update, the Marvell Wi-Fi solution in Surface Pro 2 was allowed to function on lower power states. This was bound to have an effect on the overall battery life, and tests run by Anandtech indicate a significant improvement.

Tests indicate that the battery is now good for almost 8.3 hours of web browsing on Wi-Fi, as opposed to the original 6.6 hours prior to the update. That’s a nearly 25 percent increase and well over the 8 hour target that Microsoft has internally set for web browsing on the Surface Pro 2. Battery performance during video playback also improves, up from 6.6 hours to 7.7 hours. While benchmarks are just a measure of how things have theoretically improved, the end results for users are likely to vary a bit seeing as how each one of us uses our devices differently. Have any of you, who owned a Surface Pro 2 prior to the firmware update, noticed a significant improvement in battery life? [Image via Anandtech]

Microsoft announces the Surface Pro 2 tablet

surface-pro2When it comes to the world of tablets, there are truly just two different choices of mobile operating systems to choose from that offers a wide array of apps – iOS or Android. Other mobile platforms are not exactly the most popular, but Microsoft sure is pushing their Windows platform pretty hard on the tablet front, never mind the fact that their initial batch of Surface tablets did not do as well as expected, causing the company to write down the existing stock previously that affected the company’s earnings report. Definitely bitten once and not shy the second time, Microsoft as just announced its latest Surface Pro 2 model, in addition to a bunch of other accessories to complement it, of course.

Microsoft claims that the Surface Pro 2 is the “most productive tablet on the planet”, and I am quite sure that many from both iOS and Android camps will decry that particularly blasphemous statement in their own eyes. To each his own, I guess. Microsoft has touted that the Surface Pro 2 benefits from significant updates, where among them include improvements to processing power and battery life, display and camera resolution, as well as a kickstand which will now feature a second, wider angle, allowing it to b a whole lot more comfortable to use on a desk or on your lap, depending on which working style you prefer the most. There are also enhancements made to Windows 8.1 Pro that makes the Surface Pro 2 all the more powerful and customizable.

If you are won over by the new Surface Pro 2, your purchase will include free Skype calling to landlines in over 60 countries for one year, as well as unlimited Skype Wi-Fi at more than 2 million hotspots worldwide for one year, in addition to 200GB of free SkyDrive storage for two years. The Surface Pro 2 will hope to be a true laptop replacement in due time, where it runs on an Intel Core i5 processor, accompanied by 64GB, 128GB, 256GB and 512GB configurations, with prices starting at $899 onward.

Surface Pro 2 Review: A Little Bit Better, But So Much the Same

The original Surface Pro was many things, but chief among them was strange. Not only did it deftly—if not quite perfectly—straddle the line between tablet and laptop, but it also straddled the line between futurist ideal and problematic product. This time around the Surface Pro 2 is packing plenty of practical improvements, but as a concept it’s still on shaky ground.

Surface 2 Went On Sale Early In The UK

Surface 2 Went On Sale Early In The UK

Last month Microsoft unveiled its next generation tablets, Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2. Both tablets aren’t going to be released to the public until October 22nd, but one major UK based retailer made a slip-up and put Surface 2 up for safe ahead of its official release date. The Surface 2 tablet was listed for sale on the Argos’ website, customers could purchase it online and then pick up their unit from an Argos store. The Type Cover 2 or Touch Cover 2 keyboard covers weren’t put up for sale, only the Surface 2 32GB and 64GB models were offered. The Surface Pro 2 tablet didn’t go on sale prematurely.

Argos has now taken notice of this slip-up and has removed the Surface 2 tablet from its website. So no use in heading over to the retailer’s online store right now to pick up a Surface 2 tablet before everyone else, they’re not available anymore. Argos says that it is working with Microsoft to “investigate this error as a matter of urgency.” It also says that it fully complies with embargos issued by suppliers, this particular incident is definitely unusual and one that’s likely to put a few Argos employees in hot water. As for those who’re waiting for the new Surface tablets, October 22nd isn’t that far off now.
