Microsoft lands NFL partnerships for Xbox One and the football field (video)

Microsoft lands NFL partnership

Microsoft is clearly determined to sew up some of the best content for the Xbox One: it just revealed a special, multi-year partnership with the NFL. The two are working on an optimized experience that better integrates fantasy football, including score displays, onscreen updates and Skype. They also promise exclusive content, naturally, including a lock on translating many of these experiences to tablets. The partnership will extend to the real arenas, too — among other technologies, Microsoft will bring Surface tablets to coaches and players to improve their communication and play calling. There aren’t many more details so far, but it’s evident that Microsoft wants to cater to football fans with a lot more than just its existing ESPN app.

8″ Microsoft Surface Tablet Rumored For Q3 2013 Launch

We’ve been hearing that Microsoft could be looking to launch a smaller-sized Surface tablet. Nothing wrong with the current size, but we guess there are users out there who might prefer something a little more portable. That being said, the […]

Microsoft Surface Pro coming to the UK on May 23rd starting at £719

Microsoft Surface Pro coming to the UK on May 23rd starting at 719

Microsoft has a good excuse for the Surface Pro‘s late arrival in the UK: the company claims that demand in the US stripped its cupboards bare, leaving nothing but RT crumbs to sell on this side of the Atlantic. In any case, Redmond tells us that a date has now been set, with the Core i5-powered tablet due to be available from Microsoft’s online store from May 23rd. For once, Brits can look forward to dollar-equivalent pricing, with the 64GB version going for £719 and the 128GB model fetching £799 inclusive of VAT. (That may not be cheap, but at least it’s fair.) Meanwhile, the bendy Touch Cover will continue to cost £99, and the more traditional key action of the Type Cover will add another tenner on top of that. So, there it is. Just in time for Haswell to make us wonder when a more power-efficient sequel might be coming out.

Microsoft’s Julie Larson-Green Says Windows RT’s Slow Start Is A Consumer Education Problem

Microsoft Surface RT with Touch Covers

Microsoft’s Corporate VP for Windows Julie Larson-Green was at WIRED’s Business Conference today, and she was put on the spot when asked by interviewer and WIRED Senior Editor Michael V. Copeland about the apparently sluggish start for Windows RT. RT’s failure is a consumer education problem, according to Larson-Green, since it’s very different from what’s come before.

Windows RT, for those unfamiliar or confused by the new familial breakdown of Windows following the introduction of version 8, is a lightweight version designed for ARM-powered devices (vs. x86, the architecture which full Windows OS runs on), which doesn’t offer access to the full suite of Windows software. According to our own Matt Burns, that has resulted in a big app gap, and made the Surface RT essentially a glorified web browsing tablet, which sounds like something different from a simple matter of properly framing the product.

“I think we have some work to do on explaining it to people because it’s different,” Larson-Green said. “They’re just so used to Windows meaning backward compatibility in all the programs that you use today. I use Surface RT as my main computing device, I connect to a corporate network using my virtual smart card and VPN when I need to, Office is already on there […] it’s just a simpler experience and then the Surface Pro has the flexibility if you want to work on the details.”

“I love my Surface RT,” was a common refrain from Larson-Green even into the Q&A, who later characterized it as a device for casual consumption mostly, especially filling a niche for “weekend” use. Even the dual nature of her defense of the Microsoft tablet shows that it still needs work at Microsoft itself in terms of fleshing out its role in the consumer ecosystem, which probably isn’t helping the company properly explain its purpose to the buying public.

The Surface RT is estimated to have sold only around 1 million units total since its launch late in 2012, far under its reported initial estimates of 3 million or so. Other OEMs have balked at the RT line in the meantime, with Acer waiting on launching its RT slate until at least Q2 of this year.

Bill Gates Says That iPad Users Are Frustrated With It

Bill Gates Says That iPad Users Are Frustrated With It

If one compares how many iPads Apple sold with the number of Surface tablets that Microsoft moved in the previous quarter, one might find fault with this statement. However the former CEO and co-founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates, says that iPad users are frustrated with the tablet. He adds that Windows 8 is way ahead in the game as it merges together benefits of a tablet and the benefits of a PC. Does this mean that Gates is implying these users need Surface tablets to get an enhanced user experience? He says that iPad users are frustrated because “they can’t type, they can’t create documents, they don’t have Office there.”

Gates goes on to say that he believes there’s nothing in the iPad that would make him wish Microsoft had done that for their own product. These remarks come despite the fact that Windows 8 and Surface tablet are both off to a sluggish start, though the release of Surface Pro has aided the momentum quite a lot. What do you think about this iPad vs Surface scenario? As an iPad user, do you feel frustrated with it and think that it hinders your creativity despite the fact that there are a plethora of third party productivity apps already available for the iPad? You can check out the interview here.

New Surface Tablet With 7.5-Inch Display Will Allegedly Sell For $399

New Surface Tablet With 7.5 Inch Display Will Allegedly Sell For $399

It was rumored last week that Microsoft may announce a smaller Surface tablet next month. The company is expected to make this announcement at the BUILD Developer Conference. Initially it was said that these new tablets might have screens between 7 and 9 inches, but that obviously remains to be confirmed. Rumor has it that Microsoft is indeed making new tablets for “Surface wave 2″ and that these tablets will have a smaller and lighter form factor as supposed to their counterparts.

It is being reported that the new Microsoft Surface tablet will have a 7.5-inch display with a resolution of 1,400 x1,050. Details about the internal specifications are vague, though it is believed that the company will either go for Intel or NVIDIA processors. Mass production will reportedly begin in the first quarter of 2014 and the tablet is expected to carry a $399 price tag. If true, the company might have to reconsider its price point because even the rumored one is $70 more than the iPad mini. Despite that 7.5-inch Surface tablet may have a better display and better hardware, Microsoft probably won’t be looking at much success for the device if its priced considerably higher than its main rival. Wouldn’t you agree?

Smaller Microsoft Surface Expected To Be Announced In June [Rumor]

Smaller Microsoft Surface Expected To Be Announced In June [Rumor]

We’ve been hearing about the possibility of there being a smaller Microsoft Surface since this past February, and it looks like those rumors may soon come true as DigiTimes is reporting the company will indeed be announcing its second generation of Surface tablets very soon.

According to DigiTimes’ sources from Microsoft’s upstream supply chain, the company’s unveiling of its second-generation Surface tablets will occur at their Build Developer Conference, which will be taking place from June 26-28. The second generation of Surface tablets are expected to have a screen that measures somewhere between 7 to 9 inches with component suppliers reportedly having shipped enough parts to build between 1 to 1.5 million second-generation Surface units.  The second-generation Surface is expected to run on either Intel or NVIDIA processors. Microsoft Surface Pro and Surface RT now shipping in more countries

Microsoft Surface Pro and Surface RT now shipping in more countries

Microsoft’s Surface Pro and RT are striking out to more far flung corners of the globe. Redmond just announced this morning that its two Windows 8 tablets will be made available to even more markets, with the Surface RT being the first to branch out, shipping on April 25th to Malaysia and then soon after to Mexico, Korea and Thailand by end May / early June. When it finally hits that early summer release window, the Surface RT will be accessible to a total of 29 markets globally. As for its older sibling, the feature-packed Surface Pro, that angular slate’s set to expand beyond its current limited availability (U.S., Canada and China) to 19 additional markets across Europe (including the UK), Asia and Oceania by the end of next month. And if you’ve been searching high and low for a 128GB Surface Pro to no avail, chin up, as Microsoft’s taken note of your demand and is working with retailers to keep that model “consistently in stock.”

Microsoft reiterates that Windows 8 could see small(er) devices soon

Microsoft reiterates that Windows 8 could see smaller devices soon

What’s an outgoing Microsoft executive to do on his last earnings call as CFO? Utter something that’d probably get the incoming CFO fired. Kidding aside, the outfit’s own Peter Klein saw fit to reiterate something we’d heard back in March — that Windows 8 is destined for smaller devices. To date, there isn’t a Windows 8-based slate on the market south of 10-inches, but as Apple, ASUS, Google and Samsung have found, people tend to like tablets that can be held with a single hand. Of course, the “coming soon” angle definitely adds a time stamp (albeit a vague one) that we didn’t have before, but we’re still no closer to figuring out what kinds of devices we’re to expect. A diminutive tablet? A smartwatch? A phone?

Earlier this week, Terry Myerson — corporate vice president of Microsoft’s Windows Phone division — admitted that the wearables space was undoubtedly an exciting one, though he wouldn’t go so far as to affirm that any of the code he oversaw was being tested on the arm. Of course, rumors have been running wild since Windows Phone‘s introduction that Microsoft would eventually push WP aside in favor of just using Windows on everything, so we suppose that’s another (far out) possibility. Wild imaginations are advised to contribute their best guesses in comments below. (But seriously, keep it sane. Thanks.)
