A Day on the Road with the 2014 Nissan Rogue

The Nissan Rogue SUV was introduced back in 2007, and has since become one of Nissan’s best selling vehicles. The first generation Rogue was made in Japan, and while a solid small utility vehicle, it didn’t exactly thrill with its styling. The 2014 model aims to change that, and I’m pleased to say that I think it’s accomplished its mission.

I recently had the opportunity to put the brand-spanking new 2014 Nissan Rogue through its paces in and around Nashville, Tennessee. This is only appropriate, as the new Rogue is the first model to be manufactured in the U.S., at Nissan’s massive Smyrna, Tennessee plant – which also produces the Altima, Maxima, Pathfinder, LEAF, and the Infiniti QX60.

My first impressions of the Rogue were very positive, as the new styling offers a much more dynamic visual sensibility than past models, with more pronounced curves that start on the hood and head down the side of the body towards the rear wheel wells.

That, combined with a longer wheelbase, wider stance, and slightly shorter overall length, make the new Rogue just seem like a more desirable vehicle than its strictly utilitarian older sister.

It’s also got a much more appealing front-end and grill design than previous Rogues, with more streamlined headlights, and a black grill mesh flanking the Nissan “V” and mid-bumper.

The improvements to the Rogue don’t end with body styling. The new model sports LED daytime running lights, mirrors with integrated LED turn signals, and doors that now open much wider than the previous model. Inside, there are major upgrades, with premium materials throughout, including soft touch surfaces on the dash, doors and center console, LED map lights, and comfy new seats which get their design from NASA research on reducing body fatigue.

In the back of the Rogue, you’ll find either a 3rd row of seats (for 7 passenger seating – S and SV models only), or a large storage area. Personally, I think the back is too small for the 7-passenger variant, and you’re better off going with something large like the Pathfinder if you need to transport that many kids.

nissan 2014 rogue interior 620x375magnify

On the other hand, the 5-passenger configuration is plenty comfortable – even for adults in the back seats. Oh, and speaking about the back seat, it splits into 40/20/40 sections, and the front passenger seat can fold down, so you can transport really long items with ease. Plus, you’re really going to want to take advantage of the flexible storage system, which offers 18 different configurations for transporting items. There’s even the ability to separate wet and dry items.

Under the hood of the Rogue, there’s the same 2.5 liter DOHC I-4 engine found in the 2013 model, offering 170 horsepower and 175 lb-ft. of torque. In my drive, this offered smooth, responsive acceleration, though its continuously variable transmission does get a bit whiny as it hits higher revs. Still CVT is here to stay, as it offers greater fuel efficiency than traditional transmissions. In fact, the Rogue pushes out a best in class 33mpg on the highway. During my drive through Tennessee , we did around 27mpg, but that was on mixed city streets and country roads.

Driving dynamics were solid, and I felt that the Rogue did equally well in busy urban areas and on wide-open country roads. I was also pleasantly surprised by the relatively limited body roll, which is a rarity in SUVs. The Rogue also has some nifty tech bells and whistles which improve ride, including Active Trace Control, which selectively applies brake force to improve cornering and tight turns, Active Engine Braking which downshifts to help slow the vehicle more aggressively than brakes alone, and Active Ride Control, which uses braking trickery to help smooth the ride on major bumps.

In my experience, all three of these features improved ride quality, though the Active Trace Control was most impressive – significantly decreasing the level of effort required to keep the Rogue on a clean path around tight corners in the rain.

I found the cockpit of the Rogue SV model I drove to be extremely comfortable, placing me a height that made me feel in command, and visibility is good through all windows. Both the S and SV model come with a rear-facing camera, but if you opt for the SL model, you can benefit from Nissan’s “Around-View” video monitor, which provides a top-down view of the entire car. Previously found only in Infiniti models, it’s a great technology for navigating tight garage spaces.

nissan 2014 rogue dash 620x412magnify

Controls are thoughtfully placed on the dashboard, and the controls for the dual-zone climate control system (on SV and SL models) are intuitive and easy to use. Between the RPM gauge and speedometer, you’ll find a large 5-inch LCD screen which offers easy access to information on mileage, media playback, tire pressure monitoring, and safety features. The steering wheel offers quick access to menu, media and phone controls. All models include Bluetooth hands-free phone and media playback. The SL model also has a 7-inch color touchscreen with navigation and NissanConnect app integration with services including Facebook and Google Search.

nissan 2014 rogue front angle 2 620x441magnify

Prices for the Rogue start at $22,490 for the front-wheel drive base model S, with the top-of-the-line Rogue SL AWD going for $29,420. I also highly recommend going for the absolutely massive panoramic moonroof option which comes standalone for the Rogue SV for $1,320, or as part of the premium package for the SL for $1,990, along with LED headlights, forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, and moving object detection safety features.

With its styling, storage and technological improvements, the 2014 Nissan Rogue feels like a vehicle that has finally grown into its skin. If you’re in the market for a small, reasonably priced SUV, it’s definitely worth checking out.

Backseat Drivers Are the Only Drivers in This Car

Normally backseat drivers are a pain in the butt, but with this car, it is the backseat driver doing all of the work. King of Customs in Dubai modified this 2008 Nissan Patrol SUV so that it is controlled from the rear seat.
backseat driver1

There are no controls, pedals or gauges in the front. Passengers riding up front can just watch TV or surf the web on the screens in front of them. The steering wheel is in the center in the back seat.

I bet the guy who made this has realized by now that front seat drivers are even worse than backseat drivers.

Kanye West Purchases Armored SUVs For $1,000,000 A Pop

Kanye West Purchases Armored SUVs For $1,000,000 A PopKanye West has his fair share of fans for sure, and being an international rap star with money to throw around, his latest toys would be not one, but two of the Dartz Prombron armored SUVs that he recently picked up all the way from Latvia. Yes sir, Dartz happens to be the Latvian company that rolls out the Prombron, an armored SUV which is based on the Mercedes G-Class. It boasts of a wide variety of options including “fake whale penis leather” as well as jewel encrusted snake ornaments. Not only that, those who do watch plenty of movies would realize that it is the same make of gold-plated SUV that Sasha Baron Cohen rode the in the movie “The Dictator”.

While the Prombron armored SUVs retail for approximately $400,000, Kanye decided to pick them up with the “North West Protection Mobiles” specifications, which would mean that they will amount to approximately $1 million each. While throwing a couple of million on armored SUVs should not make too large a dent in his bank account, perhaps he is thinking of his family’s safety in the long run? What do you think are some of the other extravagant purchases that superstars have treated themselves to in the past?

On the Road (and Off-Road) with the 2014 Toyota 4Runner

Recently, the fine folks at Toyota were kind enough to give me the opportunity to put their brand new 2014 4Runner SUV through its paces in rural Pennsylvania. I had the chance to drive several different models of the updated 4Runner, in a variety of driving conditions.

    2014 4runner 4

The updated 4Runner sports an aggressive new grill and body style which makes it stand out from the crowd, and drives home the fact that this SUV isn’t just meant for hauling groceries and kids around town.

The 4Runner is for active lifestyles, and can keep up with the best of them both on and off paved roads. Pictured above is the 4Runner Trail, which has the beefiest look of the bunch, but I also got to drive the 4Runner Limited, which has a more luxurious, urban look to it. There’s also a the base SR5 edition (not shown here).

    2014 4runner 1

Having driven both the Limited and the Trail editions, I have to say that I’m truly impressed with this vehicle. While it’s still built like a truck, with a body-on-frame construction, it manages to not feel like a truck when driving it. The Limited felt very luxurious and solid while hitting the open road, and had a car-like feel other than the fact that you’re higher up than normal.

    2014 4runner 3

On the other hand, taking one of the 4X4 models off-road, the 4Runner made quick work of mud-puddles, climbing huge logs and rocks, and conquering slippery uphill and downhill climbs. The Trail edition offers exceptional ground clearance, and its Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System helps the axles to move more nimbly over difficult and uneven surfaces. This model also benefits from CRAWL control, which helps drivers deal with acceleration and braking steep grades automatically, keeping their focus on steering.

    2014 4runner 5

All three versions, the SR5, Trail and Limited are powered by the same 270hp, 4.0L V6 found in last year’s model, and that’s a good thing. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, I say. The SR5 can be ordered in 4×2 or 4×4 configurations, while the Trail and Limited are only 4×4.

    2014 4runner 6

All models come with nice touches like projector headlights, LED taillights, front and rear mudguards, a backup camera, and Toyota’s Entune system. Though you’ll have to go for one of the Premium models if you want navigation. While the SR5 and Trail offer 17-inch wheels, the more urban Limited rides on 20′s. The Limited also offers the most refined interior, with leather-trimmed seats with both heating and ventilation for both driver and passenger. It also touts an upgraded JBL audio system,.

    2014 4runner 2

Overall, I’m very impressed with the 4Runner, and would be happy to park one of these in my own garage. For more information on the 2014 4Runner, check out Toyota’s website.

Some of you may remember the new car-buying flow chart I made a bit over a month ago. Between the comments suggesting I seek out my clergyperson, I noticed many of you wanted a similar chart to help you pick a new SUV. As always, I listened, and am here to help.

2013 Buick Encore Crossover Wraps Tech, Luxury and Value in a Pleasant Package

I recently had an opportunity to drive Buick’s new upstart crossover SUV, the 2013 Encore, and there’s a single word I’d like to use to describe my experience – pleasant. Yes, this small vehicle is comfortable, luxurious, loaded with modern-day conveniences, and well appointed for the price. It’s not going to win any prizes for speed or being a true “driver’s car”, but as an everyday ride, the Encore fires on all cylinders.

    buick encore front 34

Overall I found the exterior design of the Encore to be quite pleasant on the eyes, exuding a sense of luxury, without being too showy. The first thing you’ll notice about the Encore is just how small it is compared to other SUVs. With a wheelbase of just 100.6 inches and a tip-to-tail length of just 168.5 inches, you should have no problem fitting the Encore into even the most cramped parallel parking spaces. There aren’t a lot of direct competitors to the Encore – the closest would be the Nissan Juke (less luxurious, more sporty), and the BMW X1 (more powerful, more expensive).

    buick encore 1

Despite its small footprint, the Encore seems spacious on the inside – especially compared to sedans and station wagons. It offers ample seating for four adults, and you can squeeze a fifth passenger in the back seat if you must. Speaking of the back seat, I was able to set comfortably in the back with the front seats about 1/2 way back – and I’m 6-feet-tall. The back seat also offers a flat-folding 60/40 split folding bench so you can carry more items in the back, for a total capacity of up to 48.4 cubic feet. As an added bonus, you can fold the front passenger seat flat for even more storage space. Keep in mind that in exchange for this, you sacrifice the left armrest on the passenger seat, and my co-pilot was quick to point this out.

    buick encore trunk

The vehicle is packed with luxury touches you wouldn’t expect in a vehicle that starts at less than $30,000(USD). Features included on the AWD-Premium model I tested include some of the nicest two-tone leather seats I’ve ever seen, a stitched leather steering wheel, and (simulated) woodgrain trim.

    buick encore interior leather

It also comes with  6-way adjustable electromechanical seats for both driver and passenger. The premium model also includes a 7-speaker Bose audio system, heated seats, heated mirrors, and a heated steering wheel (pleasant!)

    buick encore interior dash 2

Other bells and whistles include rain sensing windshield wipers, dual-zone climate controls with analog dials, power windows, power mirrors, cruise control, tilt/telescopic steering wheel, tire-pressure monitoring, and a variety of high-tech safety systems. These include forward collision alert, a lane departure warning system and a rear backup camera with radar to detect and alert to potential collisions.

    encore backup cam

Technology that comes standard includes Bluetooth hands-free calling and media playback, AM/FM/SiriusXM (subscription) radio, as well as Pandora and Stitcher streamed audio integration powered by Buick’s Intellilink. You’ll also get GM’s vaunted OnStar service with 6 months of complimentary service. Navigation is optional, going for an extra $795. All media, climate, navigation and phone information is displayed on an ample 7-inch display that’s been placed much closer to eye level than many of the displays out there.

    buick encore tech

One thing to note is that the media, entertainment and climate controls are operated via a number of buttons and analog dials. While some people prefer using touchscreens for such features, I’m a big proponent of tactile controls when driving, so you can interact with them without having to take your eyes off the road. So even if it’s not the most sexy, high-tech approach, I personally agree with this decision.

    buick encore center console

I found the drive of the Encore to be quite pleasant, with a quiet passenger compartment and minimal road noise – with some of this benefit potentially coming from the Bose Active Noise Cancellation system. I also found the handling to be tight, but not overly sporty – somewhere smack dab in the middle between the disconnected feeling you’d get from a Lexus SUV, and the sporty handling of a BMW or Infinity SUV. Again, pleasant.

    buick encore 34 rear

Under the hood of the Encore is a 1.4-liter turbocharged DOHC 4-cylinder engine, attached to a 6-speed transmission with manual override. This combination provides 138HP and 148 lb. ft. of torque. I found this power to be plentiful in city driving, though I did find it to feel a little strained when driving on the highway. It’s not that it isn’t capable of pulling along the vehicle at highway speeds – it’s just got that typical 4-cylinder whirr sound when accelerating at higher speeds. That said, you have to remember this is the same Ecotec engine in the Chevy Sonic turbo, a car that weighs almost 600 pounds less than the Encore.

On that note, fuel economy wasn’t as good as I had hoped, with city driving delivering a less-than-stellar 15MPG, though I got a much better near-sticker 29MPG on the highway. To be fair on the city mileage, I live in Chicago, which has a higher than normal amount of city stop and start traffic. That said, when I drove it on suburban side streets, I got just about 19MPG. In addition, my figures were measured with typical comfort features such as radio and air conditioning turned on.

    buick encore side

So there you have it. If I were in the market for a starter SUV – or if I were looking to downsize from a big truck-like model, the Encore would be on my consideration list. With its perfectly pleasant styling, luxury, tech and safety features, as well as an attractive price point, it’s definitely worth a look.

Prices for the Buick Encore start at just $24,200(USD), but you’ll want to opt for the Premium AWD edition if you can – the gorgeous leather interior and heated accessories are worth it alone. Plus, if you live anywhere where it snows or is hilly, you’ll want to go with the AWD anyhow. As equipped, the fully-loaded Encore I tested had a sticker price of $32,975.

VIA Motors introduces VTRUX range of extendedrange electric trucks, vans and SUVs

If you’re launching a line of extended-range electric vehicles, ala the Chevy Volt, it’s hard to imagine a better person to help you with the launch than Bob Lutz, the driving force behind that very car. Now he’s working with VIA Motors, which today introduced a line of electric vehicles of a rather different scale. The V-TRUX line of big boy toys includes modified GMC trucks, SUVs and vans, customized to include a Volt-like powertrain that enables up to 40 miles of electricity-only driving before switching over to the onboard 4.8 liter V8. More details after the break.

Tesla Model X SUV hands-on (video)

Tesla Model X SUV handson video

We’ve seen the Model X in the flesh before, at its showy unveiling last February at which Tesla CEO Elon Musk turned up to show off the “Falcon Wing” rear doors and the rather… compact seating arrangement that makes room for three full rows of short-legged human beings. Here in Detroit at NAIAS the 2014 model year car is making another appearance, doors open and interior fully-functional. We couldn’t resist hopping in there to check out the 17-inch multi-function touch panel. Largely the same as that in the Model S, the panel lets you manage climate control, navigation and, yes, do a little web surfing too. It’s all demonstrated in the video after the break.

Tesla gets $10 million grant from California to help with Model X production

Tesla gets $10 million grant from California to help with Model X production

Tesla’s outspoken CEO, Elon Musk, said last week that he expects his company’s financials to be somewhat satisfactory in the very near future, but that’s not to say a $10 million grant wouldn’t be welcomed with open arms. Thanks to the California Energy Commission, Tesla will have some extra cash to work with during the production phase of its upcoming electric SUV, otherwise more formally known as the Model X. According to Forbes, Tesla will match California’s gesture with $50 million of its own — the total, naturally, will be used to ramp up production at its Fremont plant and to snag the necessary machinery and components to build that sleek Model X. There’s still a good amount of time before this EV hits the masses, so it looks like watching those select demos will have to suffice for now.

Toyota RAV4 EV hits California roads on September 24th with 103-mile range

Toyota RAV4 EV hits California roads on September 24th with 103mile range

Toyota had said its all-electric RAV4 would be ready to tour the California streets at some point “late summer,” and with the warmest of seasons coming to an end, the Japanese company’s declared September 24th as the date the SUV will go on sale. What’s more, today’s press release reveals the RAV4 EV boasts a brilliant 103-mile range and 78 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent), which, as Autoblog points out, makes this the first non-Tesla-branded EV with an EPA rating of 100-plus miles. If all that is still not enough for you to shell out the $50,000 (not counting rebates and tax credits, of course), Toyota dealers are expected to offer a 36-month lease option for anyone in The Golden State who prefers a shorter-term commitment.
