Tesla CEO teases crossover and sports car EVs for 2016

Tesla Model X introduction with CEO Elon Musk

Tesla founder Elon Musk would like to remind you that the Model X isn’t the terminus of his company’s electric car ambitions. Far from it: Musk tells Wired that Tesla’s 2016 plans include both a crossover SUV akin to the BMW X3 as well as a pure sports car that goes beyond just a Roadster redux. The racier vehicle will have speed, but “not supercar pricing,” the CEO says. He also elaborated on already-known plans for an ‘entry’ sedan in 2015, which should resemble a 20 to 25 percent smaller Model S and cost about $30,000 if all goes well. There’s a wide gap between promises and reality in all those statements, but Musk has a reputation for largely delivering on target — which gives us hope that there will finally be Tesla EVs within range of everyday budgets.

Conquest Vehicles unveils its first unarmored SUV

Toronto-based company Conquest Vehicles, the manufacturer of the armored and hand-built Knight XV SUV, is launching its first unarmored SUV called Evade. Evade features a new body style and design that includes new headlights and taillights, slimmed down fender flares, a hood scoop, a redesigned grille and a wider backdoor. The company said that the SUV will be built on a Ford F550 Super Duty Chassis and that its unarmored skin will be made from an aluminum-mild steel blend which is reportedly lighter than that of the Knight XV. Conquest did not reveal the specific engine but said that the 4×4 SUV will either use a gasoline or diesel engine. You can learn more about it here.

Other notable features of Evade will be an air ride suspension, front and rear FLIR night vision cameras, and roof-mounted, joystick-controlled searchlights with 360 degrees of motion. Conquest Vehicles said that Evade will retail for US $579,000 and will be heading soon to production this coming fall. “We wanted EVADE to set a new standard for our company in terms of pushing the boundaries from engineering to design to incorporating new user experiences without compromising the integrity of some of the key highlight design features offered by our armored Knight XV. The result speaks for itself in terms of the final product and we couldn’t be happier,” said William Maizlin, President of Conquest Vehicles. (more…)
