T-Mobile And AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 Updates Arrive

T Mobile And AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 Updates ArriveEarlier this morning, we did talk about how T-Mobile’s Samsung Galaxy S4 has started to receive an update, and here we are with word that AT&T, too, would be on the receiving end of an update for their version of the Samsung Galaxy S4. Just to refresh our memories, the T-Mobile variant’s refresh would carry version number M919UVUAMDL, where it would bring along with it improvements made to the Visual Voicemail app alongside ISIS app improvements. Of course, it goes without saying that the chances of other changes and fixes under the hood are also significantly high.

As for AT&T’s version of the Samsung Galaxy S4, it would be on the receiving end of update version I337UCUAMDL. Unfortunately, no official changelog has been issued, but this does not mean it is a dead end update as those who have already installed this Over The Air (OTA) update have started to share their much improved experience on the latest Samsung flagship smartphone.

T-Mobile USA Q1 2013 revenue drops 5 percent for second consecutive quarter to $4.7 billion

TMobile USA Q1 2013 revenue drops 5 percent for second consecutive quarter to $47 billion

T-Mobile USA has been making a big push for pre-paid customers since it launched its Uncarrier plans in March, and it seems to be working — unfortunately, at the expense of more lucrative post-paid clients. While pre-paid revenue bumped to $503 million over $474 million last quarter, post-paid revenue fell to $3.2 billion, a drop of 4.7 percent, and overall revenue dropped by about the same percentage to $4.7 billion from $4.9 billion in Q4 2012. Net income also swooned year-over-year to $107 million from $200 million, but was up over last quarter, when the company took a small net loss.

On the bright side, the company did pick up 579,000 customers in total, and claimed its lowest client turnover rate, 1.9 percent, since way back in 2008. Another silver lining has been the addition of the iPhone, as the company has already pushed around 500,000 of the 4, 4S and 5 models out the door since it launched at the Uncarrier event — perhaps due to the very attractive pricing. Of course, with MetroPCS soon joining forces with T-Mo thanks to the recent merger, all that might change — once we see how the powers-that-be decide to divvy up the two carriers.

T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S4 Gets Update

T Mobile Samsung Galaxy S4 Gets UpdateWe did bring you news at the end of last month that the Samsung Galaxy S4 from Sprint has already begun to receive its first Over The Air (OTA) update, and here we are with word from T-Mobile that their flavor of the Samsung Galaxy S4 would be on the receiving end of a new software update. This is pretty fast, don’t you think so? After all, the smartphone has only been made available for purchase for a single week from T-Mobile, and so, from today onwards, owners of the Galaxy S4 from T-Mobile will be able to enjoy baseband version M919UVUAMDL after being bumped up from baseband version M919UVUAMDB.

Those Galaxy S4 owners out there can perform the update after grabbing it Over The Air or via Samsung Kies, whichever floats your boat. The official changelog is nothing much to shout about, where it listed improvements made to the Visual Voicemail and Isis apps, and the entire update weighs in at approximately 168MB in size. Are you stoked of this new update, or do you think you could do without it? [Document Page]

Xperia Z goes on sale at the US Sony Store for $630, Xperia ZL gets a price cut

Xperia Z goes on sale at US Sony Store for $630, Xperia ZL takes a price cut

Americans wanting one of 2013’s Sony flagships have had access to the Xperia ZL for awhile, but they’ve had to chase down an importer if they wanted the glass-backed chic of the Xperia Z. Sony has quietly put that dilemma to rest by offering the Xperia Z through the US Sony Store. For $630, locals can get an unlocked version of the flagship in black, purple or white, albeit only with HSPA+ 3G for carriers like AT&T and T-Mobile; there’s no LTE to be found. Those who do want 4G speeds won’t have to pay a premium, however, when Sony is selling the LTE-equipped ZL for the same $630. While neither deal will be quite as tempting as subsidized phones at major carriers, those willing to pay full price for Sony gear can now afford to be a little picky.

Sony Xperia L swings by the FCC with North America-friendly 3G

Sony Xperia L swings by the FCC with North Americafriendly 3G

While Sony intrigued us with the Xperia L’s blend of a low-end smartphone with a higher-end camera, it wasn’t very specific on just where we could eventually buy one: “worldwide” doesn’t help, folks. Courtesy of an FCC filing, there’s now a hint that the phone might show up in North America. The L has surfaced at the US agency carrying HSPA-based 3G compatible with the likes of AT&T, Straight Talk and T-Mobile, as well as Canadian carriers of all sizes. Even with a manual included in the filing, though, there’s no telltale clues as to which providers in either country might be interested. Without any built-in LTE, the Xperia L we see here is more likely to reach either smaller networks or go the carrier-independent route — if it comes to North America at all, that is.

No iPhone For MetroPCS Customers For Now

No iPhone For MetroPCS Customers For NowIt was just the other day that the T-Mobile and MetroPCS deal was complete, essentially merging both companies into a single entity. While we expect that MetroPCS customers are eager to see what sort of deals they can get after merging with one of the major carriers in the US, one “perk” that they will not be getting in the near future would be an iPhone. T-Mobile only recently managed to sign a deal with Apple in which they are finally able to offer their customers the iPhone 5, making them the last of the four major carriers to do so.

We guess many had rightfully assumed that after the merger, MetroPCS customers should be able to get an iPhone if they wanted, but it turns out that will not be the case. When T-Mobile’s CEO, John Legere was asked in an interview with AllThingsD on when the iPhone would make its way to MetroPCS customers, Legere responded by saying no. He claimed that this involved marketing and how to position the iPhone for MetroPCS’ prepaid customers, and also how that it involved Apple, perhaps getting their permission to offer the phone under the MetroPCS branding.

Either way while it is somewhat of a bummer for MetroPCS customers, the possibility is not completely ruled out. Just don’t expect to see an iPhone being offered under the MetroPCS branding in the near future.

T-Mobile And MetroPCS Merger Complete

T Mobile And MetroPCS Merger CompleteTwo mobile carriers in the US, namely T-Mobile (of the big four fame, where the other three are Verizon, Sprint and AT&T in no particular order) have joined forces with MetroPCS, where these two wireless innovators are united with one common vision, that is, to deliver to wireless consumers exciting new choices without compromising on an exceptional experience.

John Legere, President & Chief Executive Officer of T-Mobile US, Inc., said, “The combination of T-Mobile and MetroPCS creates an even stronger disruptive force in the U.S. wireless market. Together, as America’s Un-carrier, we’ll continue our legacy of marketplace innovation by tearing up the old playbook and rewriting the rules of wireless to benefit consumers.”

Right now, this new entity would feature a total PoP coverage of 301 million, where 283 million of these are covered by owned network. 228 million are currently playing nice with 4G connectivity, while another 200 million more are tipped to be covered with 4G LTE by the end of this year. It would be interesting to see the synergy of this particular partnership in the long run, no? Oh yeah, the merged entity’s name is a short and sweet T-Mobile US. [Press Release]

Isis still quiet about expansion plans: will happen ‘when we’re ready’

Isis trial expansion

Over six months ago, a joint venture between AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon called Isis launched a trial of its nascent mobile payment service in Austin and Salt Lake City. Not only was its debut already delayed, we also haven’t heard more than a peep from the company since. CEO Michael Abbott, who is the keynote speaker at ETA 2013 in New Orleans, has opened the discourse but still isn’t giving many specific details on the future. When we asked him about his company’s expansion plans, Abbott simply told us that “when [we’re] ready, we’ll start putting it out in different places and see where to go from there.” In essence, he views progress in the mobile payments field as a constant evolution, which often involves taking smaller steps to accomplish a greater purpose.
