It’s official: T-Mobile closes deal to acquire MetroPCS

T-Mobile has been slowly inching closer to closing its acquisition deal with MetroPCS, and the day for inking that contract is finally here. Less than a week after MetroPCS shareholders approved the merger, which would give them a total cash payment of $1.5 billion, the deal is done, and T-Mo is a publicly traded company. In addition to giving Deutsche Telekom a 74 percent stake in the new company, the deal will bring nine million new prepaid customers to T-Mobile. According to the Uncarrier‘s President and CEO, the network would “continue our legacy of marketplace innovation by tearing up the old playbook and rewriting the rules of wireless to benefit consumers.” T-Mobile plans to keep the MetroPCS brand, holding on to its retail outlets too, pitching to different demographics with the two carriers, according to AllThingsD. MetroPCS broke the news to its customers first through Facebook, although Big Magenta followed swiftly with the official press release — you’ll find that right after the break.

AT&T 4G LTE Switched On In 20 New Markets

AT&T 4G LTE Switched On In 20 New Markets

Verizon Wireless has the largest 4G LTE network in U.S., with the service being offered in approximately 500 markets. Moreover the carrier is expected to be finished with its deployment work in a couple of months. After it, AT&T is the second network that’s offering the largest 4G LTE network, but its service is not available in even half of the total markets that Verizon caters to. Regardless, we’ve been seeing AT&T switch on its service in new markets at a swift place, only today it announced that its LTE service is now available in an additional 20 markets.

These 20 new markets include Lake City and Ocala, Florida; Lansing, Michigan; Cattanooga, Tennessee; Huntsville, Alabama and Shreveport / Bossier city in Louisiana. 12 additional markets have now been connected to AT&T’s 4G LTE network over the past couple of weeks, these include Springfield, Missouri; Florence, South Carolina; Petersburg, Virginia; Morgantown, West Virginia and Cushing, Oklahoma. AT&T is definitely playing catch-up with Verizon, it hopes to add quite a few markets by the end of summer. Other carriers such as T-Mobile and Sprint are gradually making their 4G LTE available in new markets as well.

T-Mobile BlackBerry Q10 Registration Page Now Live For Business Customers

T Mobile BlackBerry Q10 Registration Page Now Live For Business Customers

T-Mobile was the first U.S. carrier to speak about the availability of BlackBerry Q10. The network did not reveal what price tag will accompany Q10 on their network and when they intend on releasing it to customers. Last week T-Mobile only said that they will allow their business customers to register for the device on April 29. They’ve fulfilled that promise, T-Mobile business account holders can now register for the BlackBerry Q10. Just to be clear, its not a pre-order page, the carrier’s business users can submit their emails through which T-Mobile will keep them updated about the status of this device. Business customers are at an advantage though, they’ll receive the device before regular customers do. The carrier is still quiet about pricing and release date.

The BlackBerry Q10 is yet to hit U.S. shores, though it is supposedly doing very well in the U.K. Major department store Selfridges was said to have sold 2,000 Q10 units in under two hours. T-Mobile is yet to announce when they will be making this device available for their regular customers. Hopefully U.S. customers won’t have to wait as long as they had to for the Z10.

PSA: T-Mobile’s Samsung Galaxy S 4 available online today

PSA TMobile's Samsung Galaxy S 4 available online today

Samsung’s latest flagship, the GS4, landed on Sprint and AT&T a couple of days ago, and now it’s T-Mobile’s turn to join the party — at least by way of its virtual stores. Taking advantage of the carrier’s recently unveiled pricing scheme, the Galaxy S 4 will be available starting at $149.99 up front for the 16GB model (plus the $20 extra per month for the next two years, of course). Now, if you’re looking to physically pick one up instead, you’ll have to wait a little longer, as it won’t be available at brick-and-mortar shops until May 1st.

Editor’s Letter: The new consoles are coming

In each issue of Distro, editor-in-chief Tim Stevens publishes a wrap-up of the week in news.

Editor's Letter The new consoles are coming

This week I’m writing from a special place: from the perspective of a Google Glass owner. Well, to be honest I’m not wearing them this exact moment — I’m actually at 30,000 feet, making the most of a Gogo connection, and when your phone is in airplane mode there’s not much point in wearing the headset. Unless, of course, you’re looking for a conversation starter. In that role, the headset performs impeccably even when turned completely off.

It’s been an interesting couple days wearing the headset around, days I’ll continue to chronicle on the site because I know many of you are eager to know what Glass is like. I know this because I’ve had dozens of strangers come up to me and ask, “What’s it like?” Suffice to say, Glass is very interesting and the potential is compelling, but right now the thing is somewhat frustrating in its limited functionality. That’ll change real soon as more developers get to grips with the Mirror API.

T-Mobile/MetroPCS Merger To Become Official 1st Of May

T Mobile/MetroPCS Merger To Become Official 1st Of MayThe other day we reported that the shareholders of MetroPCS have given the T-Mobile/MetroPCS merger their blessings to proceed. We were also wondering if at that time would the deal be able to conclude in time as originally scheduled, which was targeted for completion around mid-year. Surprisingly it seems that despite a tiny setback from their shareholders, the CEO of Deutsche Telekom, the parent company of T-Mobile USA, has announced that the merger has been made official and will officially take place on the 1st of May! According to the statement:

We have accomplished a lot in the USA recently, for example our network modernization and the new T-Mobile USA management team, which has seen considerable success. And we have finalized the contracts with Apple and MetroPCS. The merger with MetroPCS is extremely important, since it enables us to be more aggressive in the USA.

We’re sure that customers of both T-Mobile and MetroPCS are eager to see what sort of new deals that they can benefit from based on this merger, but we guess we will probably have to wait until the 1st of May before the details are revealed! In the meantime, any T-Mobile/MetroPCS subscribers out there excited by this merger?

HSN’s order page for T-Mobile’s Lumia 521 goes live early

HSN's order page for T-Mobile's Lumia 521 goes live early

It feels like only yesterday we told you HSN would be the first retailer offering T-Mobile’s Nokia Lumia 521, and although the place hasn’t changed, the date has. The Lumia 520 variant wasn’t expected to be available through HSN’s online store until tomorrow, but in a bit of good news to kick off your Friday, the order page is now live. An off-contract handset will set you back $149.95, or four payments of $37.49. The next confirmed date we have for availability is May 11th at Microsoft and Walmart stores, so if you’re looking to bag one of the budget Windows Phone 8 handsets before then, head to the source link and hit the virtual checkout — not only may stock run dry, but HSN could’ve accidentally pulled the trigger early and hide the page when orders start rolling in.

[Thanks, Tim]

Lumia 521 for T-Mobile arrives early at HSN on April 27th for $149.95, general availability on May 22nd

Lumia 521 for TMobile arrives at HSN on April 27th, Microsoft Store on May 11th

Wanting to get first dibs on the Lumia 521 for T-Mobile? If so, it looks that you may need to tune into HSN on April 27th, because — strange as it sounds — the television network is offering the earliest access that we know of. Here, you’ll be able to score T-Mobile’s variant of the Lumia 520 for $149.95 off-contract, which includes a bonus car charger and screen protector. Following its arrival at HSN, the Lumia 521 will then hit Microsoft retail stores and Walmart on May 11th, with the same off-contract pricing. As you may recall, a previous leak from TmoNews suggested the smartphone would hit T-Mobile stores yesterday, but this date has come and gone without official availability (or even an announcement) from the carrier. Fret not, though, because we’ve done a bit of digging, and our sources tell us that the Lumia 521 is currently set to hit general availability on May 22nd, which by all measures should include all T-Mobile stores. Naturally, you now have some options to weigh, even if one of them might cost an ounce of your pride.

T-Mobile Has To Stop Its “Deceptive” No-Contract Ad Push

T-Mobile’s big no-contract, Uncarrier campaign just hit a bit of a snag; Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson has ordered the company to correct the deceptive campaign, which promised no contracts and no commitment without saying anything about hardware subsidies. T-Mobile has agreed to update the ads nationwide. More »

T-Mobile Criticized For Its Deceptive Uncarrier Plans Advertising

T Mobile Criticized For Its Deceptive Uncarrier Plans Advertising

Last month T-Mobile announced its Uncarrier plans, the announcement led to Verizon subscribers urging their carrier to drop wireless contracts as well. However T-Mobile is now being heavily criticized by Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson, who ordered T-Mobile to amend its “deceptive advertising that promised consumers no annual contracts.” Despite the fact that T-Mobile’s Uncarrier plans are no longer tied with cell service contracts or smartphone subsidies, it is criticized for having mislead customers by advertising what it said to be contract free plans, while in reality users have to sign an agreement to pay full cost of handsets if they cancel their Uncarrier service plan before time.

T-Mobile has now signed an Assurance of Discontinuance, it will no longer advertise that customers can get wireless service and devices without any restrictions. T-Mobile will also disclose to customers that they will have to pay the balance due on the device if they cancel their wireless service plan. Those who purchased a device under this plan between 26th of March and 25th of April are now given the option of cancelling without any penalty.
