MetroPCS shareholders vote to approve T-Mobile merger

It hit a few snags along the way, but T-Mobile’s merger with MetroPCS now appears to be all but a done deal. Bloomberg is reporting that MetroPCS shareholders voted to approve the deal this morning, following a recommendation from two previously opposed shareholder advisory firms that the merger be approved last week — and approval from the board before that. According to Bloomberg, the final terms of the deal give T-Mobile parent Deutsche Telekom a 74 percent stake in the new company, with MetroPCS shareholders receiving a $1.5 billion cash payment. Most notably for T-Mobile, the deal brings nine million new prepaid customers into the fold, as well as the all-important wireless spectrum that MetroPCS currently owns.

Magazine slips in a free T-Mobile WiFi hotspot, courtesy of Microsoft (video)

Magazine comes stuffed with a free TMobile WiFi hotspot, courtesy of Microsoft video

Microsoft has tried more than a few publicity stunts to get us using Office 365, including WiFi hotspots in UK park benches. A magazine with a hotspot, however, is fresh — and might just get us to notice the ads we normally skip. Americans who’ve received a special issue of Forbes have flipped past the articles to discover a fully functional (if stripped down) T-Mobile router tucked into a cardboard insert. Once activated, it dishes out 15 days of free WiFi for up to five devices at once, at up to three hours per charge. Microsoft is naturally hoping that we’ll see the value of always being in the cloud and pony up for an Office 365 subscription, but we’re sure that many will just relish having an access point while they’re reading on the train home — it sure beats settling for a Twitter feed.

[Thanks, Britton]

Online sales of T-Mobile's Galaxy S 4 delayed, set for April 29th

Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G Gets Jelly Bean Update

Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G Gets Jelly Bean UpdateOn the ill-fated 9/11 anniversary last year, we brought you word that T-Mobile is set to deliver the Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G (boy, is it ever a mouthful for a smartphone moniker!) to the masses for $150 with a new 2-year customer agreement, where it was then all set to roll out on the 19th of September 2012. Well, the Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G certainly managed to hit the market back then, and it does leave the masses wondering just when will T-Mobile introduce the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update to put to bed the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system that comes as stock?

Good news, as owners of the Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G have started to report that they have been on the receiving end of the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update from T-Mobile, as this particular update can be downloaded via Over The Air (OTA) or Samsung KIES. Regardless, we would suggest you stick to a Wi-Fi connection since the update itself weighs more than 400MB, so to consume that much data in your monthly data plan is definitely not a wise thing to do. Can you say, “Google Now, here you come!”?

T-Mobile’s Lumia 810 Reportedly Reaching EOL Status, To Be Replaced By Lumia 521

T Mobiles Lumia 810 Reportedly Reaching EOL Status, To Be Replaced By Lumia 521It was just the other day that many customers online have realized that handsets such as the Nokia Lumia 810 and the HTC 8X are no longer available via T-Mobile’s website, leaving many to speculate about the fate of either device. Thanks to the folks at TmoNews, they have managed to get their hands on what looks like a leaked document from the carrier, indicating that the Nokia Lumia 810 will be reaching an end of life status in May. However considering that the handset was removed from T-Mobile’s site in April, they are speculating that either the handset was removed early, or the carrier has run out of inventory and they have no plans of restocking, especially since we are only a couple of weeks away from May, the handset’s supposed EOL status.

No word on the HTC 8X as TmoNews’ source has informed them that there is no EOL date attached to the phone just yet. In any case the document also points to the successor of the Lumia 810 – the Lumia 521 which was announced back in February during MWC 2013. For those who forgot, the Lumia 521 will pack a 4” 800×480 display with 512MB of RAM, 8GB of storage, a 5MP camera with HD video capture, and HSPA+ 21Mbps connectivity.
