EE closing 78 overly cozy stores, keeps related staff

EE closing 78 overly close stores, keeps related staff

Merging two carriers’ efforts invariably creates at least some kind of redundancy, no matter how much the two sides try to avoid it. In EE’s case, it led to stores that were suddenly too close to each other — so close that some were very literally next door. Rather than perpetuate the inadvertent comedy, EE says it’s shuttering 78 stores that it believes are just wasting space. The provider doesn’t want to put added strain on the remaining shops, however. It plans to move all affected staff to existing locations, and it’s hoping to repurpose managers rather than oust them. The scaled-back retail operations theoretically “maintain momentum” while keeping customers and workers happy, EE tells us. When we see genuinely absurd situations like the photo above, we’re inclined to agree.

There’s some good news today for T-Mobile customers looking to add a few more Nexus devices to their lives. The carrier announced today that the Nexus 7 tablet is now available to order with a T-Mobile SIM from the Google Play store, where it will set you back the same $299 as the regular HSPA+ model (still 32GB only). Blackberry 10 Z10 “Lisbon” Could Arrive For T-Mobile 27 March

Screen Shot 2013 01 11 at 2.15.51 PMwtmk 660x365 602x332 Blackberry 10 Z10 Lisbon Could Arrive For T Mobile 27 MarchWe know that T-Mobile has expressed their support of RIM’s Blackberry 10 platform and products. While that is good news for Blackberry fans on T-Mobile’s network, the question we have to ask is when will T-Mobile actually launch a Blackberry 10 device? Thanks to the folks at TmoNews who managed to get their hands on a leaked screenshot of T-Mobile’s roadmap (alleged), it would seem that the Blackberry 10 Z1 will be released on T-Mobile’s network come 27th of March. RIM has provided a rough timeframe of the Blackberry 10 devices launch which is set for Q1 of 2013, although back in 2012, RIM’s COO said that Blackberry 10 devices will be made available 30 days after launch, so the 27th of March date seems to be kind of late. However given that US carriers tend to be a bit slow when it comes to pushing out updates amongst other things, we guess this isn’t surprising. Presumably this would mean that the Z10 will be available for purchase unlocked although we guess you’d still need to get a Blackberry plan with your carrier if you wish to use it. Anyway hopefully more information about the Z10’s launch and its dates will be provided shortly, so be sure to check back with us then for the details.

Verizon, AT&T and TMobile to offer BlackBerry 10 devices at launch

Can’t wait for RIM’s big mobile refresh? Neither can major US carriers, apparently. Just like Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile have confirmed that they’ll be carrying BlackBerry 10 devices at launch, too. Hardly a surprise, considering all three carriers have stocked RIM hardware in the past — but still an important win for customers betting on BlackBerry. UK carriers announced something similar recently as well. As VP Alec Saunders tells us, BB10’s designed to be different and to move you forward — and going by what we’ve experienced so far, the upcoming six pack just might help the folks at Waterloo move forward, too.

T-Mobile iPhone Arriving In 4 Months’ Time At Worst

01 T Mobile logo T Mobile iPhone Arriving In 4 Months’ Time At WorstYes, we do know that T-Mobile will finally jump on board the iPhone bandwagon after all these years of losing out on subscribers who are bent towards Apple’s smartphone, but as the adage goes – better late than never, right? T-Mobile CEO John Legere shared with Reuters that the company he leads will finally begin to sell the iPhone in “approximately three to four months” time, and they are also targeting a similar time frame to make the transition to Value Plans, while signaling the end of subsidized handsets.

John Legere was wise to remain mum on the specifics behind T-Mobile’s deal with Apple, as you would not want to upset the apple cart (pun intended) at such a delicate moment. Basically, he reiterated the fact that T-Mobile will sell the phone “sooner rather than later”, and I am quite sure that consumers who hear this would take it as music to their ears. If your T-Mobile contract is about to be up in four months’ time, would you consider picking up an iPhone then?

T-Mobile chief: iPhone availability might come some time in the next three months, maybe

Getting an iPhone on the Magenta network? Not too hard — but it’ll get easier soon, according to the company’s CEO. In a chat with Reuters, T-Mobile head honcho John Legere said that the network’s iPhone launch was more likely to happen in the next “three to four months” than the next “six to nine.” Not the clearest launch window, but one that fits comfortably within the carrier’s LTE rollout and network reframing plans. It gives the network plenty of time to ditch its subsidies, too, which could help T-Mobile grow its US market share. “If the old industry structure chooses to ignore what we do,” he told Reuters, “that’s a potential.” Legere didn’t commit to a time frame there either, but a dual launch might make sense — Magenta’s iPhone customers don’t seem to care much for subsidies anyway.

Hands-on with T-Mobile’s HD Voice, Tap Tag app for NFC-ready Android phones

Handson with TMobile's HD Voice, Tap Tag app for NFCready Android phones

T-Mobile had more than just big updates at its CES event; it gave us opportunities to try both its newly national HD Voice service and a seemingly unknown carrier-specific NFC app, Tap Tag. The currently Android-only software is best described as a crossover between somewhat simpler existing NFC tag systems. like Samsung’s Tectiles, and multi-step automation like Motorola’s Smart Actions. Put a Tap Tag-equipped phone against a relevant marker and it will perform one or more customizable tasks, such as putting the phone in a do-not-disturb mode at the same time it sets an alarm for the morning. From our glance through the menus, it’s surprisingly deep and flexible without being intimidating. There are pre-defined templates, but nothing’s set in stone — if your definition of an office mode involves launching YouTube and cranking the volume, you can make it happen.

More details, including HD Voice testing, await after the break.

Today, T-Mobile announced a multi-year partnership with Major League Baseball in which the magenta carrier will provide an on-field communication system that links team managers in the dugout to coaches in the bullpen. Naturally, the setup will operate over T-Mobile’s wireless network. With the deal in place, T-Mobile subscribers will gain access to exclusive MLB content. For what it’s worth, we can also look forward to the carrier’s role as presenting sponsor of ESPN’s Wednesday Night Baseball. Hey, it’s one way to get the word out about those unlimited plans.
