T-Mobile: The iPhone Isn’t Worth It

T-Mobile’s struggled because of the fact that it doesn’t carry the iPhone. But it doesn’t seem to care: in fact, one of its executives has explained that being able to offer Apple’s phone isn’t worth the sacrifices it would have to make to the rest of its device portfolio. More »

AT&T, Boingo, T-Mobile agree to back wireless in 30 more New York City subway stations

New York City subway WiFi plans expand to 30 more stations, let you Twitter underneath Times Square

As welcome as Transit Wireless’ strategy for wireless in New York City subways has been, having access in just six stations around one Manhattan district has been limiting for locals who want to stay online underground. Thankfully, there’s plans afoot to cover a much wider base. AT&T, Boingo and T-Mobile have offered to back a next wave of expansion that will cover 30 extra stations with cellular and WiFi access, in places we’re more likely to recognize: Columbus Circle, Rockefeller Center and Times Square are all part of the rollout. While the tragedy of Hurricane Sandy has pushed back completion to early 2013, it shouldn’t be too long before some of the city’s most important hubs (and tourist traps) are covered — and Transit Wireless’ ambitions to eventually put wireless in all of New York City’s subways could keep every borough online during the daily commute.

Department of Justice asks MetroPCS for more info regarding T-Mobile merger

Department of Justice asks MetroPCS for more info regarding TMobile merger

We can’t say we’re exactly surprised, but it’s still worth noting that the United States DOJ has contacted MetroPCS to ask for additional information about the company’s recently announced merger with T-Mobile. The adequately-named “Second Request” will be essential before an actual consolidation approval can be made, and MetroPCS has stated it plans on being fully cooperative so that it can “obtain the approval of the transaction as soon as possible.” Additionally, the Wireless for All carrier says it’s pretty confident on the Department of Justice’s ability to see the proposed merger is “both pro-competitive and pro-consumer.” In the end, it’s nothing more than a required hurdle before the two telcos can move on with their original plans. Official word from MetroPCS can be found inside the presser below.

HTC Windows Phone 8X for T-Mobile: what’s different?

HTC Windows Phone 8X for TMobile what's different

You’ve seen it twice before and you’re bound to see it two more times yet. It’s the Windows Phone 8X by HTC, Microsoft’s signature ambassador to all things mobile and Live-Tiled, and it’s now available on T-Mobile. As the carrier’s sole WP8 flagship, it arrives with a bit of a stiff leg — there’s none of the flexibility exercised by AT&T’s variant, as it comes in just one color (California Blue) and one 16GB storage configuration. At $199 on a two-year contract, the 8X is a pricier buy for T-Mobile’s value-minded customers (especially with the $150 Lumia 810 also available). So although we’ve already passed judgment on both of its GSM twins, we’re here to tell you how Magenta’s version breaks from the pack.

Nokia Lumia 810 for T-Mobile review

Nokia Lumia 810 for T-Mobile review

After a long wait, the next crop of Windows Phone handsets are beginning to trickle in, and just in time for the holidays. If you’re familiar with our reviews of the HTC 8X and Nokia Lumia 920, you already know that Windows Phone has some impressive contenders in its stable, but these flagship devices only tell half of the story. Now, we’re given an opportunity to test the Lumia 810, a mid-range smartphone that’s now available on T-Mobile.

It’s clear that T-Mobile isn’t looking to start a price war here. At $150 after a rebate, the Lumia 810 costs more than Nokia’s crown jewel, the Lumia 920, which you can find on AT&T for $100. Another telling sign: the phone also costs more than its siblings, the Lumia 820 for AT&T ($50) and the Lumia 822 for Verizon ($100). Naturally, you’ll be able to recoup some of this with T-Mobile’s lower monthly fees, but it goes without saying that T-Mobile is levying an early adopter tax on its subscribers. That said, for those sold on Windows Phone yet unwilling to jump ship, you’re left to choose between the Lumia 810 and the more expensive HTC 8X. Along with its lower cost, Nokia holds an ace up its sleeve in the form of its home-brewed Windows Phone apps, which may be enough to sway customers away from HTC’s flagship. Will the extra card be enough for a winning hand? Join us after the break as we explore the finer points of the Lumia 810.

T-Mobile Samsung sale details leaked

Assuming you have been holding out for a spanking new smartphone all this while, but have yet to take the plunge simply because you believe that there is a better deal right up the horizon, here we are with a leak on an upcoming T-Mobile sale that will involve none other than Samsung devices. T-Mobile did confirm many of the details of this particular sale when they made announcements late yesterday, including the number of handsets that will be available without having you to fork out a single cent, other than to sign on for a contract. If you have been hankering after a juicy Samsung Galaxy S3 all this while, then you will be pleased to know that this offer will even extend to this smartphone.

During the sale that starts from November 16th and ends a day after that, once the relevant rebates have been applied, the Galaxy Note 2 will cost you a mere $200, which is nearly 50% off the $370 list price. Unfortunately, there are no good deals all the way, as the 32GB Galaxy S3 will cost $200 after applying all the relevant rebates.

PSA: Nexus 4 now available from T-Mobile for $200 on a two-year service agreement

PSA Nexus 4 now available from TMobile for $200 on a twoyear service agreement

Google Play opened the Nexus 4 floodgates yesterday, but today it’s T-Mobile’s turn. America’s fourth largest carrier is officially offering Google’s latest purebred smartphone for $200 on its Value and Classic plans with a two-year service agreement. If contracts aren’t really your thing and wasting money is, you can purchase the phone outright for $500, a $150 markup on Google’s asking price. As it stands the first LG-made Nexus handset will be available at select T-Mobile retail locations, so if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Of course, you could always order online directly from the carrier, but considering yesterday’s turn of events, we suggest that you move quickly.

Samsung Galaxy S III for T-Mobile USA receives its Jelly Bean update

Samsung Galaxy S III for T-Mobile

Sprint was the first major US carrier to start delivering Jelly Bean to Galaxy S III owners, but it no longer stands alone now that the T-Mobile edition is officially receiving its update. If you’re part of the initial crop deemed eligible on Magenta’s network, a check either over-the-air or through Kies should put Android 4.1.1 on the Samsung flagship. T-Mobile’s version of the upgrade delivers the expected dashes of Google Now and Project Butter as well provider-specific fixes for WiFi calling. Don’t worry if there isn’t an immediate notice, as carrier-linked OS updates usually take weeks to get everyone on the same page; the main question is when all the other big US networks will follow suit.

T-Mobile rolling out Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for the Samsung Galaxy S3

Do you own the Samsung Galaxy S3 on T-Mobile’s network? Well the good news is that it seems that T-Mobile is finally pushing out the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for your phone! This is certainly good news as not too long ago, a Samsung spokesperson was quoted as saying that Jelly Bean updates for the US-based Galaxy S3 smartphones could only arrive in 2013. This was despite the fact that the update had already begun rolling out in other parts of the world. Then again given that updates in the US usually have to go through the carriers first, this delay was to be expected. In any case there have been reports of several users who have begun downloading the update, so do keep your eyes peeled for the notification before firing up the KIES software. If you have already received the update, let us know in the comments below on how it is treating you!
