HTC 8X rumored for possible November release

The other day before the weekend, we reported that according to a leak, we managed to uncover additional details and a press shot of HTC’s upcoming Windows Phone 8 handset, the HTC 8X. Following that leaked information, the folks at TmoNews have also come forward with some additional details, namely the fact that the HTC 8X will be released on T-Mobile’s network come November. No specific dates were mentioned, so we guess a general November release will have to do for now.

For those who might have missed the news, the HTC 8X is expected to run on Microsoft’s latest Windows Phone 8, feature a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, a 4.3” display, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, an 8MP rear-facing camera capable of 1080p Full HD video recording, NFC and Beats Audio integration. Of course given that these specs haven’t been confirmed, we’ll be taking it with a grain of salt for now, but hopefully all will be revealed during HTC’s event on the 19th.

T-Mobile’s Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G priced at $150, set for 19th September release

Last week we reported that T-Mobile had officially announced the Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G, an Android-based handset with a slideout QWERTY keyboard. Unfortunately at that time, T-Mobile did not mention when exactly the phone would be released and just how much it will cost, but based on its specs we naturally assumed that it would not break the bank. Well the good news is that the price has been revealed and the Galaxy S Relay 4G will set you back $150 with a new two-year contract after a $50 mail-in rebate. It has also been scheduled for a release on the 19th of September. As a quick recap for those who might have missed the news, the Galaxy S Relay 4G will sport a 4” Super AMOLED Display, a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 dual-core processor, a 5MP rear-facing camera, a 1.3MP front-facing camera, HSPA+ 42Mbps support and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich preinstalled.

Everything Everywhere announces the UK’s first major LTE service, EE: combines Orange and T-Mobile networks

Everything Everywhere announces the UK's first major LTE service, EE combines Orange and TMobile networks

Finally, after gaining approval from UK regulator Ofcom, Everything Everywhere announced today that it’s calling its incoming 4G service EE. It’s a new company, new network and a new brand, we’re being told here at London’s Science Museum. Officially formed of the combined network might of Orange and T-Mobile, the union has been allowed to use 4G services on its 1800 MHz spectrum starting today, although we’re still waiting to hear precisely what hardware will be compatible with the UK’s first LTE network. EE will also start offering a fiber service.

Orange and T-Mobile will still exist, with the colored carrier concentrating on giving customers “more from their phone” (whatever that consists of), while T-Mobile will appeal to customers chasing value. We’ve been told both 4G and fiber offerings will be launching soon, though this will also depend on hardware availability. We’re also hoping there will be more on the cards than just a WiFi dongle, but more as we get it. The first cities to get the service are London, Cardiff, Birmingham and Bristol, with 16 more launching by the end of the year — including the likes of Manchester and Southampton. EE puts that at covering a third of the population of the UK.

We were given an ever-so brief glimpse at incoming devices for the new 4G service — Brits can expect to pick up devices from Samsung, Nokia, Huawei and more “in the coming weeks” — the same timeframe that with encompass the launch of the network to its customers after testing. (The offering from EE will also include MiFi and USB dongles.) It even dropped a iPhone-tinged “one more thing” that more devices are incoming. Possibly something we’ll hear about tomorrow.

T-Mobile unlimited data for unlocked iPhone users

While there is still a debate regarding T-Mobile USA’s access to the iPhone 5, the carrier has opened an offensive to recruit unlocked iPhone users who may want to switch to its 1900MHz network, which the company calls “iPhone friendly” (meaning 3G and HSPA+ support).

To shed some context of this story, T-Mobile used to have its HSPA+ “4G” network on different frequencies than what AT&T and others are using. The net result was that only rare “pentaband” non-TMobile phones like the GSM Galaxy Nexus could enjoy the carrier’s HSPA+ support.

With the recent addition of 1900MHz HSPA+ band, iPhones and other smartphones can now benefit from T-Mobile’s HSPA+ and the company wants to make sure that users out there are aware that it offers cheaper rates.

T-Mobile has a number of plans that can be substantially cheaper than AT&T and Verizon. In the past, I’ve looked at them, but the idea of getting EDGE connectivity has always been a turn off. Now that this may not be a problem anymore, maybe it’s time to reconsider that option again.

Keep in mind that the 1900MHz band may have not been rolled out in your area yet, so test with one of the unlocked iPhone 4S found in T-mobile’s stores.

Rural Cellular Association rebrands as Competitive Carriers Association, mirrors its move to the big city

Rural Cellular Association rebrands as Competitve Carriers Association, mirrors its move to the big cityWhat’s in a name? Quite a bit, if you ask the Rural Cellular Association. It’s becoming the Competitive Carriers Association to reflect a membership shift from smaller providers that often serve the countryside to a much more urbane roster that includes Clearwire, Sprint and T-Mobile, on top of grown-up existing members. Not surprisingly given the advocacy group’s recent bedfellows, the name switch also emphasizes the attempt to resist a consolidation of power in US telecom — CCA membership is limited to carriers with under 80 million subscribers, which conveniently excludes heavyweights AT&T and Verizon. Although rebranding is a symbolic gesture first and foremost, the group is no doubt hoping the name will make its intentions clearer the next time a big spectrum swap rolls around.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 headed for Verizon, and more [rumor]

Chatter about an impending Verizon Galaxy Note 2 has hit the web following the apparition of what briefmobile says is a screenshot from a Verizon version of the 5.5″ smartphone from Samsung. According to them, the Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 2 will be identical in specs to the international version, which means that it will have a quad-core chip (SoC) and LTE support.

That the Galaxy Note 2 comes to Verizon is not a surprise (AT&T should get one too…). We expected that. However Samsung previously used dual-core chips from Qualcomm to get support for LTE bands from US carriers for the Galaxy S3. Users were mildly happy about it, but in the end, the phone was still a success.

But the story gets better. the same source says that the Samsung Galaxy Note will come to every major US carrier, which is unprecedented. Heck, even US Cellular is going to have it (along with Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint). Stay tuned. don’t miss out Samsung Galaxy Note 2 hands-on.

T-Mobile coaxing unlocked iPhone users to its network with Value Plan push, aggressive in-store service

T-Mobile coaxing unlocked iPhone users to its network with Value Plan push, aggressive in-store service

If, like T-Mobile, you’re one of the few major US networks that doesn’t carry the iPhone, there’s a few stages you have to go through. First comes the heavy-handed hints, then you pull a racy leather number from the wardrobe before declaring that you’re fine without it and never wanted the thing anyway. Now it’s hit stage four — throwing caution to the wind and inviting users to bring their unlocked handset into stores and sign up for its $70-a-month (amongst others) unlimited plan anyway. From September 12th, iPhone 4S display units will be rolled out in stores, with helpful sales staff around to swap out your AT&T microSIM for one of its own. You’ll also be able to get hold of network-specific apps like myAccount, Visual Voicemail and T-Mobile TV as soon as they’re ready. In order to make this marvel possible, it’s rolling out 1900MHz HSPA+ access to allow customers access to its “faux-G” service — which is one way of enticing you away from upgrading to whatever’s coming on Wednesday.

T-Mobile USA iPhone 5 likely

Chatter about a T-Mobile iPhone 5 has increased dramatically this week, carried publicly by 9to5Mac who claims to have T-Mobile (UK) insider information: “this is not the last T-Mobile iPhone 5 news” they said. But our industry sources also agree that T-Mobile may finally be getting onto the iPhone bandwagon. Right now, it is the only major carrier in the USA that does not sell an iPhone. T-Mobile sells the iPhone in other parts of the world. (more…)

Leaked screenshots show Galaxy Note 2 on AT&T and Verizon

Leaked screenshots show Galaxy Note 2 on AT&T, may be coming to TMobile and Sprint, too

Samsung may not have spilled the beans on US variants of the Galaxy Note II, but phablet fans have already set their sights on the usual suspects. Aiding rumors, for instance, are a collection of screenshots showing the phone running on both Verizon and Ma Bell’s networks. A BreifMobile source says that the AT&T version of the oversized handset is being tested, as are T-Mobile, Bell Canada and Sprint variations. The AT&T version is said to be a dead ringer for the international model, retaining its quad-core Exynos processor while snubbing the network’s branding. Much like Sammy itself, the source didn’t have much to say about availability — just “soon.” Can’t wait? Skip on down to the source link below to tease yourself with leaked screenshots.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OTA update leaked for T-Mobile’s Samsung Galaxy S3 SGH-T999

Heads up T-Mobile subscribers, if you own the Samsung Galaxy S3 and you’re wondering when T-Mobile and Samsung will push out the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update, well we’re just as clueless as you are but the good news is that it looks like an OTA Android 4.1 leak for the SGH-T999 (T-Mobile’s version of the Galaxy S3) has been spotted online. It’s hard to say if this is the final build that will be released officially, or if this build is unfinished, but we guess for those who are impatient, you can get your hands on the update via SamMobile’s website. As always we caution you to proceed with care and make sure you know what you’re doing, lest you end up with a bricked handset and money down the drain. In any case hopefully this is a sign that the update is around the corner, as apparently Android 4.1 Jelly Bean should be making its way onto US Galaxy S3 handsets by the end of the month.
