Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G officially announced by T-Mobile

If you type out a lot of emails and even lengthy documents on your smartphone while on the go, you’d probably prefer a physical keyboard over a virtual one as it “feels” better, plus it probably helps with productivity as well. The good news is that if you’re in the market for such a phone and you don’t want to spend too much, T-Mobile has officially unveiled the Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G. Pricing and availability is expected to be revealed in the next few weeks, but in the meantime it looks like the handset is official.

For those who might have forgotten, the Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G will sport a 4” Super AMOLED display, a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S3 dual-core processor, a 5MP rear-facing camera, a 1.3MP front-facing camera, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, HSPA+ 42Mbps connectivity and of course, a slideout physical QWERTY keyboard. Given that these aren’t exactly the most powerful specs we’ve seen so far, it’s probably safe to assume that the Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G will not be breaking the bank.

Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G announced, arriving at TMobile in the coming weeks

The rumors didn’t lead us astray this time around: T-Mobile’s latest QWERTY device, the Samsung Galaxy S Blaze Q Relay 4G has been officially announced. While we’re still waiting to hear pricing and availability (aside from the usual “coming weeks,” that is), we have confirmation that the 4-inch Super AMOLED device will offer ICS, HSPA+ 42Mbps connectivity and a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S3 processor. Additionally, it has a 5MP rear camera, 1.3MP front-facing cam, 5-row keyboard and it’s been certified for SAFE (Samsung Approved for Enterprise). We’re still wrapping our brains around the name, but fortunately we have some time to do so before the device officially drops onto store shelves.

PSA: T-Mobile’s we-really-mean-it unlimited data plans go live

PSA TMobile's wereallymeanit unlimited data plans go live today

T-Mobile confirmed rumors of true unlimited data plans almost as soon as they emerged, which left a surprisingly long gap between the announcement and real availability. Consider that gap closed — as promised, the Unlimited Nationwide 4G Data plans are ready for action. Those who don’t need hotspot support on a smartphone can add $20 to a Value voice plan or $30 on a Classic plan to get throttle-free, uncapped data. For real. While we’d ideally see a best-of-both-worlds scenario with hotspots and unfettered speeds together in one plan, it’s hard to object to a second major US carrier defending unlimited data in an era where we’re regularly getting less for the money. Can we have a few more providers onboard, please?

T-Mobile Galaxy Note 2 is the Samsung SGH-T889

T-Mobile might be might be late to the Samsung Galaxy Note party in the US, but I guess they have learnt from the past, and this time around they do not intend to miss the Galaxy Note 2 boat by making it available to the masses – and soon, too, if a particular screenshot is to be believed. What you see on the right depicts a Samsung device that carries the model number SGH-T889, where it has been touted to run on what is alleged to be T-Mobile’s 4G HSPA+ network. The main giveaway clue would be the model number, considering how the original Galaxy Note was dubbed as the T879, making it highly logical and probable that the T889 is the Galaxy Note 2 instead.

As for the Android version which this puppy runs on, it will be Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean, so you need not fret about not receiving the latest operating system version or having to wait for an update right out of the box. Now all we need to do is wait for an official confirmation, and we are good to go.

Samsung Galaxy S II for T-Mobile now available for $299 without contract from Walmart

Samsung Galaxy S II for TMobile now available for $299 without contract from Walmart

If you’ve ever thought it was impossible to score an excellent smartphone alongside a prepaid plan, it’s time to reconsider the assumption. Just like the Galaxy S II will soon arrive at Boost Mobile for $360, those willing to brave the crowds at Walmart will save some cash with T-Mobile’s version of the handset, which now sells for $299 — in comparison, T-Mobile currently sells the Galaxy S II for $550 outright. As one caveat, the phone must be sold with a no-contract plan of at least $30, but one can discontinue service whenever they desire. If your wallet is now tingling, you’ll find the full PR after the break.

Nano-SIM for next iPhone makes appearance ahead of launch?

First we saw a supposed leak of the next iPhone’s nano-SIM tray, and now we’re seeing alleged photos of the nano-SIM itself. iFun posted an image of what it says is a new T-Mobile nano-SIM that has just started arriving at the German carrier. The package apparently came with a message telling carriers that these SIMs are for smartphones about to go on the market, and that they’re not to be given to customers — yet. Cupertino, of course, tweaked its nano-SIM design earlier this year, and this photo does come ahead of an Apple announcement event rumored for next week.

Samsung Galaxy Note II coming to ThreeUK and O2 later in the year

Samsung Galaxy Note II coming to Three,

We’ve been speaking to the big five UK mobile networks, finding out where British phablet fans can get their Galaxy Note II fix. So far, only ThreeUK (after the break) and O2 have confirmed they’ll be carrying the device when it arrives later in the year, while T-Mobile and Orange said they didn’t have any details for us yet. Most cryptically, Vodafone’s response was that it “isn’t involved in this,” so we figure we’ll have to sit tight for more concrete news. If anything changes. we’ll let you know.

T-Mobile’s latest Galaxy S II update silently removed ‘universal search’ feature

TMobile's latest Galaxy S II update quietly nixed 'universal search' feature

As you may or may not know, there’s been an issue related to the universal search feature inside a region-specific batch of Samsung Galaxy S IIIs; with the Korean company going as far as “inadvertently” removing it from some Euro handsets a while back, before eventually bringing it back to life. Now, thanks to great, thorough inspecting by the folks from Android Police, it appears T-Mobile’s S II flavor is the latest galactic slab to have such searching trait completely wiped out from the device. Apparently, this took place during the T989UVLH1 update from T-Mo a couple of days ago, but much to everyone’s surprise, mentions of any “universal search” tweaks were nowhere to be found on the changelog. More importantly, how’s it looking on your end? Do let us know in the comments below.

Isis mobile payment system primed for September launch, supported devices revealed

Isis mobile payment system primed for September launch in Austin and Salt Lake City

You’ve known it was coming, but Isis has been so quiet on the mobile payments front in the past few months that you might’ve forgotten the score. Now, the joint venture backed by AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon has announced that it’ll debut its system in Austin and Salt Lake City next month. At least part of the delay is attributed to its shift in strategy, when Isis shelved its plans to process payments through the carriers themselves and instead work with MasterCard and Visa. Isis representatives have declined to elaborate on future expansion plans.

Coinciding with the recent update that enabled Isis support for T-Mobile’s Galaxy S II, MasterCard has come clean with a list of devices that’ll receive similar treatment. Specifically, those in the US can expect the Droid Incredible 4G LTE, One X, Amaze 4G, Galaxy S III to gain Isis support. Naturally, the possibility remains open for other devices as well, and if you’d like to see the complete list of candidates, make sure to check out the PDF below.
