Mild-mannered Samsung Galaxy S II update brings Isis mobile payment support

Mobile payments, those made from a phone and typically via NFC, haven’t exactly had a huge impact on the average American consumer just yet, but look past that and you’ll see a battle is brewing. Google had been making the most noise, with its Google Wallet, but today the competing service Isis just launched its first proper salvo. The T-Mobile version of the Galaxy S II is currently receiving an OTA update (T989UVLH1) that, among a few other tweaks, enables support for Isis NFC payments, making it the first such device on the market. Many more are inbound from AT&T and Verizon as well, setting the stage for an epic virtual currency battle that only the peaceniks at the Mobile Payments Committee stand a chance of mitigating.

T-Mobile introduces microSIM kits For iPhone 4/4S

So we heard about how an internal memo going around T-Mobile was preparing to train employees to “sell against the iPhone“, but here is something related to the iPhone, albeit slightly different as well. We are referring to the inclusion of microSIM kits for the iPhone 4 as well as iPhone 4S under the T-Mobile umbrella which would mean that there would be an upcoming announcement concerning the network. It makes perfect sense if the rumor of “selling against the iPhone” were to turn out true, assuming that T-Mobile will miss out on the upcoming iPhone 5 boat, which means that the network will need to make up for the loss in potential subscribers due to the lack of a highly anticipated handset under their sales roster, and what better way to do so than entice folks who do not need to be at the cutting edge of technology all the time?

We do hope to cover upcoming developments concerning the emergence of these microSIM kits, if any, so stay tuned and watch this space!

T-Mobile reportedly tells employees to sell against the iPhone in alleged internal memo

In the US, save for T-Mobile, all the other major carriers (AT&T, Verizon and Sprint) offer the iPhone on contract. While T-Mobile customers can bring the iPhone onto the network, the carrier isn’t offering it officially.  That being said, thanks to the folks at TmoNews, they have managed to get their hands on an alleged internal memo that come September 21st, the carrier will begin training their employees to sell “against the iPhone”, which means that the carrier will be attempting to do all they can to persuade customers that every other phone in their portfolio would be a better choice than the iPhone. Of course we can’t tell if this leaked memo is to be believed, but it would not be a stretch of the imagination considering that once the next-gen iPhone is released, it will be one of the hottest selling devices, leaving T-Mobile empty handed. In any case we’ll treat this with skepticism for now, but if you’re ever in a T-Mobile store on the 21st of September (or any time after that), try asking a T-Mobile rep if they have iPhones in stock.

Everything Everywhere signs 5-year deal with MasterCard for mobile payments

Everything Everywhere signs 5year deal with MasterCard for mobile payments

MasterCard has switched up its NFC and Mobile Payments deal with T-Mobile and Orange to include corporate parent / sibling Everything Everywhere. The pairing will leverage the existing Orange Cash standard to get users onto the service, building out a person-to-person payment system similar to Pingit as they go. It’s reportedly angered rival networks Vodafone and O2, still smarting from last week’s 4G news, who were co-operating on a unified mobile payments service called “Project Oscar” that would have standardized the system nationwide. Given that Vodafone has partnered with Visa and O2 is trying things out on its own, perhaps the next time you choose a phone, you’ll have to side with your card-provider of choice, too.

Looks Like T-Mobile’s Not Getting the iPhone… Again [T-Mobile]

In a leaked internal memo published originally by unofficial T-Mobile news blog TmoNews, employees of the iPhone-less carrier are told in no uncertain terms that beginning September 21st, they will commence training to sell “against the iPhone.” More »

T-Mobile memo asks staff to sell ‘against the iPhone’ on September 21st

TMobile memo asks staff to sell 'against the iPhone' on September 21st

T-Mobile has been virtually screaming for an iPhone deal, but a memo leaked to TmoNews suggests Apple isn’t prepared to listen just yet. The note tells carrier staff they’ll get training material to learn “selling against the iPhone” from September 21st onwards. Why does that date sound familiar? Although we don’t know if T-Mobile has an inside track on Apple’s plans or is just making assumptions based on rumors, that’s not the language we would associate with a carrier that has a new agreement to sell the iPhone — not unless it’s using a loose definition of the word “against,” at least. As a consolation, T-Mobile is reportedly supplying updated micro-SIM kits on August 29th to emphasize its improving support for unlocked iPhones on refarmed 3G spectrum. Nothing’s official until Apple struts on stage, of course; you may nonetheless want to research alternatives if getting a cheaper contract phone on Magenta trumps having Cupertino’s latest and greatest.

Apple asks that eight Samsung devices be banned from US store shelves

Apple asks that eight Samsung devices be banned from store shelves

Favorable infringement findings in hand, we knew Apple would seek injunctions to ban Samsung devices from being sold in the US. And now we know that Tim Cook and company are following up on that billion dollar verdict and are seeking to enjoin eight handsets from being sold. As you can see in the chart above, the Galaxy S 4G, four Galaxy S II variants, the Galaxy S Showcase, Droid Charge, and Galaxy Prevail are all on the chopping block. Why is Apple only going after eight of the twenty-something devices found to be infringing its IP? Well, most of them are no longer being sold, and we all know how Judge Koh just hates having her time wasted.

Majority of smartphone users rarely exceed 2GB of data every month, according to recent survey

There was quite a bit of fuss kicked up when carriers started to end unlimited data plans as this meant that users who used a lot of data had to pay for overages. Usually this resulted in highly expensive bills as charges for over-the-limit data can be quite expensive. That being said, a recent survey conducted by NPD has revealed that a vast majority of smartphone users rarely exceeded 2GB of data usage per month, and at the same time discovering that amongst all the carriers, T-Mobile users were considered to be the most “data hungry” with 11% of its subscribers using more than 3GB a month. Its competitors, AT&T and Verizon, had 4% and 3% of its users exceeding 3GB respectively.

This survey was conducted using the built-in  data usage feature on Android phones and was collected from 1,000 smartphone users. Apparently the reason for T-Mobile’s figures to be so high was due to a younger subscriber base who used their data for streaming music and video. What do you guys think? Is NPD’s study accurate? Do you find yourself doing the same things on your smartphone even after unlimited data plans have been discontinued?

T-Mobile’s Samsung Galaxy S3 to get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update

It is said that the Samsung Galaxy S3 which hails from T-Mobile will be on the receiving end of the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update pretty soon, at least according to the latest leak. It seems that this latest build is known as the JRO03L, where it can be said to be nearly complete although there are still a few more niggling issues to contend with. Some testers of the leaked ROM have reported that they are unable to carry out WiFi-based calls via T-Mobile’s service. Now this is a given and not surprising at all, considering how the file itself hails from the hallowed halls of Samsung, instead of from T-Mobile itself.

Those who are curious enough can always give this leaked Jelly Bean ROM a go, although we would strongly advise you to make a backup of all your work and data before you proceed with an installation. After all, you can never quite tell just when Murphy is going to strike and render your Galaxy S3 a brick. Do ensure that your Galaxy S3 from T-Mobile runs on stock T999UVALH2 prior to the Jelly Bean installation. This should mean that the official Jelly Bean update for T-Mobile’s Galaxy S3 should be on its way soon.
