T-Mobile Galaxy Note II on sale (for $70 more than AT&T wants)

T-Mobile has announced that it will be offering the Samsung Galaxy Note II on its network. You can order up the device today if you’re willing to pay nearly $70 more than you can get the same exact phone for on the AT&T network. T-Mobile will offer the device in gray or white colors for $369.99.

By comparison, AT&T is offering the Galaxy Note II for $299.99 with the same two-year agreement. Another bit of bad news about the $369.99 price tag for the device at T-Mobile is that it includes a $50 mail-in rebate. That means when you’re rolling in the T-Mobile store to buy one of these, you’re actually going to pay $419.99 and then wait for 6 to 8 weeks for your $50 to come back in the mail.

If you’re a big enough fan of the T-Mobile network that paying more doesn’t bother you, you can order the device up today, and it offers the same features that the Note II has on the other networks. Those features include Android 4.1 for the operating system, a quad-core 1.6 GHz processor, and the 5.5-inch HD Super AMOLED display.

The phone/tablet has a full HD resolution camcorder, 16 GB of integrated memory along with a microSD slot for expansion, and a 3100 mAh battery. The dimensions of the device are 5.94 x 3.16 x 0.37-inches and weighs 6.3 ounces. The tablet also features the S Pen allowing users to write directly on the screen.

Isis Mobile Wallet launches in Salt Lake City and Austin

The new mobile payment system known as Isis Mobile Wallet has officially launched its pilot program in two US cities today. Salt Lake City, UT and Austin, TX are getting Isis support city-wide, and already there’s a total of nine smartphones to choose from that come loaded with Isis support from AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile.

Isis is a new mobile payment method based on NFC that AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile all teamed up to support and develop. Isis already has formed partnerships will the major credit card companies Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express, and the platform is being tried in the public for the first time today in Salt Lake City and Austin.

On top of the nine Isis-ready devices that are already available from the three carriers, 11 more are said to be launching before the year’s end, which means a total 20 Isis-capable phones will be available before 2013 rolls around. It seems that Isis may become the new mobile payment standard, but it will be competing against Google‘s Wallet service, which has already gotten a head start.

It’s claimed that there are already “hundreds” of locations around Salt Lake City and Austin that support Isis, so finding a place to use the new service might not be as difficult as it sounds. New Isis users will receive a $10 Isis card when they activate their account, and users can earn another $15 when they activate their card to become reloadable.

T-Mobile makes changes to data service requirements

T-Mobile has recently made some changes to its smartphone data service requirements. Previously, customers were allowed to simply just nab the 200MB data plan when activating a smartphone, which certainly saved on costs, but now the carrier is bumping up the minimum to 2GB of data when activating a new smartphone plan.

The change went into affect October 10, and requires any new customer activating a smartphone to choose the 2GB data plan at the very minimum. The good news is that this doesn’t affect existing customers who are using the 200MB data plan, and even better, it won’t affect current customers who upgrade to a new smartphone in the future.

T-Mobile said it made these changes simply because modern smartphones consume a lot of data, and 200MB just doesn’t cut it usually, so in order to prevent their customers from getting unexpected overage charges or throttling, the carrier has decided to require at least 2GB allocated to each smartphone activation.

This was certainly a good move for T-Mobile, and while the changes will essentially bring in more revenue for the carrier, helping their customers out by protecting them from overage charges is something you don’t see every day from other carriers. Then again, we’re not sure why more customers don’t just go for T-Mobile’s unlimited plan while they still can.

T-Mobile drops 200MB smartphone data plan, 2GB now the new standard

DNP TMobile drops 200MB smartphone data plan, 2GB now the new standard

T-Mobile silently killed off its $10 per month 200MB data plans, a leaked document reveals. A company spokesperson verified the news with Fierce Wireless. This decision is most likely due to the growing demand for mobile data as smartphone applications continue to evolve. Grandfathered customers will not be affected by this new policy, but will need to pay full price for a device and sign up for a “Value” plan when upgrading in order to maintain their existing service plan. T-Mobile now requires its smartphone customers to have a minimum data plan of 2GB or higher, which starts at $20 per month. While this change may make sense for most smartphone users, existing customers who are light on data and heavy on savings might have a different perspective when it’s time to buy a new phone. Check out an extreme closeup of T-Mobile’s document after the break.

T-Mobile iPhone 5 may arrive early next year

T-Mobile has long been able to offer support for the iPhone on its network, but the carrier simply never sold the device in any of its stores. That might change, though, come early 2013. Morgan Stanley analyst Nick Delfas says that T-Mobile could “announce official iPhone distribution in early 2013.”

As it stands, T-Mobile is the only major US carrier that doesn’t sell the iPhone to its customers, but that could easily change. T-Mobile has been working on improving its network across the country. The carrier is currently working on a $4 billion project to beef up its 4G LTE network, and it launched unlimited 4G data plans last month.

This undertaking could be happening to make room for the iPhone 5, which features 4G LTE capabilities for the first time. T-Mobile also announced a couple weeks ago that it’s planning to merge with MetroPCS, which has been working hard to improve its own 4G LTE network. The merger will help T-Mobile increase its LTE reach across the country.

The analyst didn’t provide anymore details other than that the deal could help sell another one or two million iPhone 5 devices in the first quarter, which would be even more of a win for Apple, since its device would be reaching even more customers. Apple sold around 5 million iPhone 5s during opening weekend alone.

According to the image (which you can catch after the break), the Isis app will arrive on Google Play come October 22nd for folks in Salt Lake City, Utah and Austin, Texas to take for a test drive. Another image reveals that those who activate their mobile wallet could snag $10, and an additional $15 if they convert their Isis Cash card into a reloadable prepaid card. Call one of the two cities home and can’t wait to put the NFC payment solution through its paces? You’ll need an Isis SIM card and a Samsung Galaxy S III, S II or Relay 4G to partake in the festivities. For those outside the lucky cities, there’s still no word on when Isis will fully launch.

T-Mobile to offer the Nokia Lumia 810 exclusively in the U.S.

TMobile to Offer the Nokia Lumia 810 exclusively in the US

T-Mobile announced on Monday that it will exclusively offer the Nokia Lumia 810 in the United States. Set to be available “in the coming weeks,” the 810 features a 4.3-inch OLED WVGA Clear Black display, an 8-megapixel Carl Zeiss optics rear-facing camera, a 1.2-megapixel Skype HD-certified front-facing shooter, Windows Phone 8 and support for T-Mobile’s HSPA+ faux 4G network. If those specs sound a little familiar, they should — the 810 seems quite a bit similar to the already announced 820. There are some details absent from this release, however, including CPU, storage, RAM and pricing, but we expect this to be remedied in the coming days. Now that T-Mobile and Ma Bell have called dibs on some of Nokia’s first wave of Windows Phone 8 devices, we’re left to wonder if America’s other two major wireless carriers will soon get with the program.

Samsung Galaxy S III is T-Mobile’s all-time best-selling device

T-Mobile has been working hard lately to up their game as a contending carrier — they just bought MetroPCS, and they hired a new CEO not too long ago to turn the company around. Today, the carrier announced some more news that is sure to bolster up its credibility. The Samsung Galaxy S III is T-Mobile’s all-time best-selling device.

Of course, this is probably more of a shout-out to Samsung than to T-Mobile, but at least people are buying Galaxy S IIIs on T-Mobile’s network. Then again, the carrier didn’t disclose exactly how many Galaxy S IIIs they sold, but it could be safe to assume that they didn’t sell as many as other larger carriers.

However, this means that sales of the Galaxy S III on T-Mobile eclipsed that of previous hyped-up devices like the Galaxy S II, G2, G2x, and a variety of the carrier’s MyTouch devices. You might be wondering where the iPhone stands on T-Mobile’s all-time best-selling list, but if you’re familiar with the carrier, then you’ll know they don’t directly sell the iPhone, which makes them the only major carrier who doesn’t offer Apple’s smartphone to customers.

Then again, today’s T-Mobile achievement says a lot about Samsung. They’re a dominating force in the Android industry, and no doubt are they giving Apple a run for their money. The Galaxy S III has succeeded at being one of the best-selling devices period, selling 20 million units in just three months. The holiday season is still upon, so we’re looking forward to how Samsung and mobile carriers are going market their lineup of devices to bring in even more sales.

T-Mobile MetroPCS deal faces Sprint counter-offer threat

MetroPCS could be the target of a bidding war, with wireless industry whispers that Deutsche Telekom’s bid to merge the carrier with T-Mobile USA may face a challenge from another US network. Although the agreement with Deutsche Telekom has already been announced as in incipient merger, a trio of sources speaking to Bloomberg claim ailing rival Sprint is weighing a counter-bid that could be submitted as early as next week.

The CDMA carrier’s board is meeting within the next two days to decide whether to chase a deal of its own, though there’s no guarantee that one will be submitted. A company spokesperson declined to comment – as did those from MetroPCS and Deutsche Telecom – though another source claims the German firm is already prepared to fire back with a new offer, and “would consider  better terms if necessary,” should Sprint weigh in.

It’s not apparently the first time Sprint has considered snatching up MatroPCS. Rumors earlier in the year suggested the acquisition had been considered, but was shelved after the board decided the price was too rich for its liking.

However, an upward change in share price has left the carrier looking more solid, and – along with the threat of T-Mobile USA swelling into a more significant challenger – a deal may now be something Sprint can’t afford to opt out of. Together, T-Mobile USA and Metro PCS would have 42.5m subscribers and sales of around $24.8bn.

A deal between the two CDMA carriers, though, might make more sense than with GSM-based T-Mobile USA. There would be significant network infrastructure to be done in order to combine the MetroPCS and T-Mobile USA’s service, though the upside is the promise of an LTE network with claimed data speeds of double what Verizon is currently offering.

T-Mobile and MetroPCS are officially merging

Yesterday we reported that European wireless provider Deutsche Telekom was in talks with regional carrier MetroPCS to carry out an acquisition deal. Today, the deal is done, with T-Mobile USA officially announcing that MetroPCS will be merging with the carrier to increase customer base and attempt to take the third spot in the wireless carrier race in the US.

Yesterday, AllThingsD confirmed that Deutsche Telekom was indeed meeting with MetroPCS representatives today, and that the two companies could even come to an agreement by the end of the day. It seems there was no hesitation in the discussion, as the two have already come to an agreement. Deutsche Telekom will hold a 74% stake in the merged company, while MetroPCS will hold the remaining 26% and will also receive $1.5 billion in cash.

Based on analyst estimates, T-Mobile is now expected to have around 42.5 million subscribers and receive $24.8 billion of revenue this year. The merger is just one big step for T-Mobile to become a stronger wireless carrier in the US. They hope that the acquisition of MetroPCS will move them into the third spot in the race for the largest US wireless carrier.

John Legere, who was just recently hired as CEO of T-Mobile, said that the merger with MetroPCS “is another logical and significant step” that will allow T-Mobile “to deliver amazing, affordable and trusted 4G services, while providing opportunities to expand geographic territories and serve more customers.”
