T-Mobile BlackBerry Z10 will be available to business customers March 11

Earlier this morning, we reported that BlackBerry’s Z10 has been tipped by sources as arriving at AT&T on March 22. Now more information on the handset has surfaced, this time with T-Mobile announcing that business customers will be able to get the Z10 starting on March 11, which is this coming Monday. Non-business customers, however, will have to keep waiting.

Those who purchase on Monday could then receive their BlackBerry Z10 by Friday of next week. This is similar to what the sources had to say about AT&T and the Z10, which is set for March 22 for consumers, not just business customers, according to sources. If that proves true, there’s a chance consumers will see wider availability of the Z10 to non-business customers via T-Mobile later this month after the launch for business customers, although nothing specific was stated by the carrier.

The BlackBerry Z10 has been available to European consumers for a while now, but has been delayed in the United States due to longer testing periods required by carriers. The US is a big market for the company formerly known as RIM, which announced BlackBerry 10 and the handset back in January, a platform and device the company hopes will help it regain market share.

The BlackBerry Z10 features a 4.2-inch 1280 x 720 LCD display, as well as a rear 8-megapixel camera with an LED flash and a front 2-megapixel camera. Inside, users will find a Qualcomm MSM8960 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage space. There’s a microSD slot for additional memory expansion for up to 32GB. Connectivity is comprised of quad-band UMTS/HSPA+ and GMS/EDGE, LTE, Bluetooth 4.0, and Wi-Fi a/b/g/n. You can check out our full review of the Z10 here.

T-Mobile to layoff employees before MetroPCS merger, sources say

First news of the T-Mobile acquisition of MetroPCS surfaced back in October 2012. Thus began the long process of passing through government red tape before the deal could actually go through. Earlier today, we reported that the carrier has received a thumbs up from the Department of Justice to move forward with the merger. Now, according to sources, the next step will be a large number of layoffs at T-Mobile’s headquarters.

t-mobile

The sources are said to be from within the company, and say that T-Mobile employees know about the upcoming layoffs. The cuts could affect over 100 people in the carrier’s marketing group, among others, and is said to be slated for Thursday (tomorrow). Not surprisingly, T-Mobile hasn’t said anything on the matter, and declined offering a comment.

The layoffs will happen at the company’s headquarters in Bellevue, which has more or less been shielded from the layoffs that the carrier had issued over the past months. In 2012, in excess of 4,200 jobs were terminated, most of which (3300) were in the company’s call centers. Word was that T-Mobile would refill those numbers with new employees for its Business Sales department.

Many have feared that the T-Mobile/MetroPCS merger would result in massive job losses, a concern to such a degree that the FCC was asked by both Congress and the Communications Workers of America to put in blocks on the acquisition that would preserve jobs. T-Mobile hasn’t been doing fantastic financially, having suffered a 5-percent drop in sales in its fourth quarter over the same quarter the year previously.

Sony announces unlocked Xperia ZL destined for US

Sony has confirmed that its Xperia ZL smartphone, similar to its Xperia Z, will be available in the United States. Even better, the 5-inch handset will be unlocked, and can be used with both T-Mobile and AT&T. The Xperia ZL will be available in three colors – red, white, and black – and could be priced as high as $760.

The price hasn’t been officially specified, however, nor has a release date for when the handset will hit shelves Stateside, with the Xperia Store simply listing it as “coming soon.” For those willing to wait, what they’re get is a high-end Sony flagship handset that offers excellent hardware, a sleek body, and the benefits of not being tied to a carrier.

The Xperia ZL is officially in the phablet category with a 5-inch full high-definition 1080p display. Inside, users will find a Qualcomm quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, as well as 2GB of RAM. There’s a 13.1-megapixel camera around back, and the handset runs Android Jelly Bean. Although the phone doesn’t support Verizon, users can use it with both AT&T and T-Mobile’s 4G LTE networks.

While the Xperia ZL is unlocked, it isn’t a dual-SIM handset. It comes pre-loaded with Google Talk, YouTube, and Facebook. Connectivity includes NFC, Bluetooth, a microUSB port, and wifi. Battery life is excellent, with up to 40 hours of music playback, 500 hours of standby (460 LTE), up to 10 hours of talk time, and up to 5.5 hours of video playback.

MetroPCS moves back shareholders meeting to April 12th

MetroPCS has moved the date of its shareholders meeting back to April 12th. The special meeting will allow MetroPCS stockholders to vote for the pending T-Mobile merger. Following the meeting and the votes, MetroPCS believes that its merger with T-Mobile will be completed shortly after. MetroPCS encourages all of its shareholders to vote in favor of the proposal using their GREEN proxy card.

MetroPCS moves back shareholder meeting to April 12th

The MetroPCS/T-Mobile merger has been negatively perceived by many of MetroPCS’s shareholders. They believe that the merger will only land them more in debt, and that there isn’t enough value in it for MetroPCS. P. Schoenfeld Asset Management, an investment adviser that owns 2% of MetroPCS’s shares, believes that the company should stay a stand-alone company and wait for a better offer to arrive.

Paulson & Co., MetroPCS’s biggest shareholder with 8.7% of the company’s shares, stated that it’s going to withhold its vote until it sees the final proxy statement, which will be submitted by MetroPCS at the meeting. Paulson & Co. also echoes the concerns of P. Schoenfeld Asset Management, and says that the merger would result in too high of a debt for MetroPCS, and that the company should explore alternative options.

T-Mobile is gunning for this merger with MetroPCS because doing so will help it expand its 4G LTE network. This would also make them the best, cost-friendly service providers in America, with both companies offering unlimited 4G data, and T-Mobile soon to be offering contract-less service plans like MetroPCS. The two companies will continue to operate as separate entities, but they will combine to make a fierce, value-oriented competitor to the other 3 major carriers.

T-Mobile may up the “uncarrier” approach by ditching contracts

T-Mobile may have chosen to brand themselves as the uncarrier, however it is looking they they may soon take that a step further. These latest details are still in what we would consider the rumor category, however it is looking like T-Mobile may soon ditch the contracts. But before you start thinking about high priced phones and large up front payments, there is more to the story here.

t-mobile-logo-580x191

The details suggest that T-Mobile will soon go contract free, which also means that early termination fees will be a thing of the past. That alone is starting to make things seem better already, isn’t it. As to how this is expected to work without requiring someone to shell out $500, $600 or more upfront — a mix of down payments and monthly payments. Think of it like financing the price of the device. Details suggest that would mean paying $99 or less at the time or purchase and then paying the remainder monthly until the device is paid in full.

Again, details have yet to be confirmed by T-Mobile which means things could still change. The nice part here, this is all expected to go into effect later this month. TmoNews is reporting that T-Mobile may be looking to put this in effect as early as March 24 with an announcement coming as soon as this Monday. Assuming that plays out as expected, Monday could be a big day for T-Mobile.

As for those existing customers still under contract with T-Mobile — you are not going to let off entirely. In fact, it was said that any existing contracts will remain in place until they expire. Otherwise, if you were considering upgrading this weekend, you may want to hold off until Monday, just in case. In addition to the contract-free shift, T-Mobile is also expected to do some further rebranding. This is expected to include what is being called “Dual 4G” in which they promote their HSPA+ and LTE networks.

T-Mobile releases 2012 Q4 data, shows $4.9 billion in revenues

T-Mobile has released its fourth quarter earnings for 2012, showing a drop in revenue over the fourth quarter of 2011 to $4.9 billion, a 5.2-percent decrease. Still, the revenues represent a second quarter of growth for the carrier, which also saw growth in both its Monthly4G plans and branded prepaid customers. While the data shows both gains and losses for the company, overall things were less than fantastic.

t-mobile-logo

While things are looking up for the carrier’s prepaid plans, contract customers are down, with revenue from branded contracts dropping 4.3-percent to $3.4 billion. This is a 13.9-percent year -on-year drop, with ARPU declining 2-percent to $55.47, a 4.7-percent year-on-year decrease. Still, the company is seeing good things with its BYOD (bring your own device) option, with the carrier seeing about 100,000 new iPhone subscribers per months under the program.

Per the announcement, T-Mobile has seen a customer increase from its Mobile Virtual Network Operator partners, with the numbers growing by 275,000 in the fourth quarter of last year, nearly a 5x jump over the Q4 of 2011. Likewise, its B2B channel experienced growth last quarter to 6.4 million, a 7-percent increase. Despite the losses it experienced, the carrier sees good things in its future.

T-Mobile USA’s President and CEO John Legere had this to say: “T-Mobile finished 2012 on a strong note, providing a foundation for executing even bigger game-changing moves in 2013. As the ‘Un-carrier,’ our promise is simple. You will see us put customers at the center of everything we do going forward, and that means giving them fair and simple wireless experiences in a way that other carriers never have before.”

T-Mobile announces GoSmart Mobile unlimited prepaid service

T-Mobile has announced a new service that gives users access to inexpensive unlimited prepaid plans. Call the GoSmart Mobile plans, they start at $30 a month, and are aimed at those who don’t want to be locked into a contract, and who want to avoid high monthly costs without sacrificing in their mobile usage. According to the Seattle Times, this is the first time T-Mobile has unveiled its own separately-branded service.

t-mobile gosmart

The service is aimed at consumers who make annually between $30k and $40k, as well as the younger consumer crowd that spends most of their mobile usage texting and checking Facebook. GoSmart’s marketing director Shailendra Gujarati said regarding the service, “We are looking at customers whose predominant needs when it comes to wireless are talking, texting or entry level data services.”

The service was already launched in nine markets in December, during which time it was tested. Today, however, the carrier has launched the service nationwide. Needless to say, it runs on T-Mobile’s own network, and two handsets are being offered under the service – a $49 cell phone and a $99 Android smartphone, in addition to an $8 activation kit and SIM.

The cheapest plan is $30 per month, which offers unlimited text and talk but no mobile data, while the best plan is arguably the $35 plan, which offers text, talk and unlimited data access at slower speeds for things like checking email. The most expensive plan is $45 per month, and is the same as the $35, except that web access is high speed for those who want to watch videos and stream music on the go. There’s a 5GB cap, at which point the speeds are throttled.

T-Mobile USA launches its GoSmart prepaid service

T-Mobile launched its nationwide prepaid wireless brand, GoSmart Mobile, today. Its plans start at $30 a month for unlimited talk and text, $35 a month for unlimited talk, text, and 2G data, and $45 a month for unlimited talk, text, and 5 GB of 3G data. GoSmart has become available throughout 3000 retail stores all around the U.S. T-Mobile wants to snag as many customers in the prepaid market as possible.

T-Mobile USA has high hopes for its GoSmart brand

According to Doug Chartier, senior VP of GoSmart, around 80 million U.S. consumers purchase prepaid wireless phone service instead of signing two-year contracts. The prepaid market is growing around 8% each year. T-Mobile has been testing its new prepaid service in 9 markets since December, and in only two months, “tens of thousands” of customers have signed up.

If you want the highest data speeds allotted by T-Mobile, you can also purchase their own offering of prepaid plans. At $30 a month, you can get 100 minutes, unlimited text, and 5GB of high-speed 4G data. For $60, you get unlimited talk, text, and 2GB of 4G data, and for $70 a month you get unlimited talk, text, and 4G data with no cap. With T-Mobile’s $70 plan, you can Netflix as many movies, stream as much Pandora, and Skype call as many people as you want with no worries.

The world of prepaid wireless service is becoming more and more appealing to consumers. With companies like Virgin Mobile USA and Straight Talk who offer extremely cheap wireless service plans, it’s more tempting to sign up with them than pay $100+ a month for AT&T or Verizon Wireless’s service. Also with companies like GoSmart, T-Mobile, and Straight Talk offering customers the option to bring their own device, it’d be much cheaper to just purchase a device off eBay, Amazon, or Swappa, and use it on their network. Are you on a prepaid plan?

T-Mobile Sonic 2.0 Mobile HotSpot LTE revealed in press image

T-Mobile’s first 4G LTE hotspot has been revealed through a press image. The 4G LTE hotspot will be called the T-Mobile Sonic 2.0 Mobile HotSpot LTE. The device is set to launch on March 27th, but the pricing for the device is still unknown. The hotspot features a very simple, black design with a power button, navigation buttons, and a colored display. The display shows your connection info, battery life, settings menu, number of people connected to the hotspot, and more.

T-Mobile Sonic 2.0 Mobile HotSpot LTE revealed in press image

March 27th looks like it will be a very busy day for T-Mobile. Not only is it planning on launching the T-Mobile Sonic 2.0 Mobile HotSpot LTE, but it will also be launching the Blackberry Z10 on the same day. The Blackberry Z10 will be capable of utilizing T-Mobile’s 4G LTE data network. The Samsung Galaxy S III LTE should also be released and will be fully capable of taking advantage of T-Mobile’s LTE network. Finally, there is the Samsung Galaxy Exhibit that is supposed to be the U.S. variant of the Samsung Galaxy S III Mini, however we don’t believe it should be touting any 4G LTE bands.

It has also been rumored several times that T-Mobile should be launching the iPhone on its network sometime around late March as well, although it doesn’t appear on the road map. It could be that T-Mobile is being very secretive about its iPhone launch because it plans on holding a separate, grand event altogether for it. T-Mobile has been left out of the iPhone game for a long time, with all 3 of the other major carriers selling iPhones on their networks while it had to compete without it.

It looks like T-Mobile will be fully stocked for its LTE network, whenever it decides to launch it. It can be any day from now, but we’re hoping that it’s sooner rather than later. T-Mobile is the last carrier to launch its LTE network, with AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and Sprint well on their way of getting their LTE network to cover as many people as possible. T-Mobile will be launching its LTE network in Las Vegas first, and moving onto Kansas City afterwards.

HTC One leaks in black with carrier pricing

This week the HTC One has leaked once again, this time in a lovely black iteration complete with price points on three of the top four major carriers in the United States. This bodes well for the manufacturer as their launch with the HTC One X and HTC One S from a bit less than a year ago ended up not doing as well as they’d expected, largely due to carrier exclusives – rather than the wide release we’re seeing here, that is. Will this be HTC’s return to prominence with a single smartphone to rule them all?

HTC_One_black-274x540

With the HTC One it would appear that we’re going to see two different colors right out of the gate, including the white/silver version we saw earlier this week and the black we’re seeing today. This black version has been leaked courtesy of Unwired View’s @evleaks, the same source as the white/silver version. One point you really should be noting here is that this device works with a wholly unique two-button setup – not seen on any Android smartphone in the past.

BC0-LdSCUAELIpm-268x5402

This device is being tipped as coming to AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint all at once, each of them coming together some time in early March. Verizon has been tipped to be getting this device in a slightly different configuration on the 22nd of March as well, perhaps as a refresh of the DROID DNA. The release price for the HTC One has been tipped as $199 USD for a 32GB internal storage version and $299 USD for a 64GB version, both versions being priced the same on each of the three carriers besides Verizon.

The specifications for this device remain quite standard through the leaked ranks, those being a 4.7-inch full HD display with a quad-core 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor under the hood. This device is also tipped to be coming with enhanced photography, videography, and audio support as well. Stay tuned to SlashGear for more information as we head to the big HTC event next week in NYC – we’ll be there with bells on!
