Nexus 4 $50 deal prompts T-Mobile stock shortage

Mobile carrier T-Mobile USA has placed the Google Nexus 4 smartphone on sale this week for a surprising nearly-$250 discount, going “out of stock” once again rather rapidly after having done so. This announcement comes quickly after it was figured out by some intrepid fans that LG had ramped up production so well that 1,000,000 units were now on the market – a giant undertaking and speed-up compared to what was out only a few months ago! T-Mobile will now be making sure they’re back in-stock as quickly as they’ve drained out – and will a massive influx of Android users on their hands, they’ll certainly be glad to do so!

With the Google Nexus 4, LG created a device that was at once extremely powerful and surprisingly inexpensive. While we’re still not entirely sure how Google is able to offer the device for a price so low (right around $300 USD) off-contract, it would appear that T-Mobile is out-doing the big G with their own ways and means. When you do decide to pick up a device from T-Mobile, mind you, you wont be getting the same deal as when you pick one up from Google.

tomob

With a T-Mobile purchase of a Google Nexus 4, you’re getting a 2-year contract attached to your smartphone. When you purchase a Google Nexus 4 from Google, you get that device with no contractual obligations. It would appear that the popularity of the Google Nexus 4 being entirely due to its relatively low off-contract price has been rendered obsolete – let the $50 “discount” roll on!

Have a peek at the timeline below of recent stories surrounding the Google Nexus 4 and let us know if you’ve got one already. Also be sure to speak up if you’re planning on purchasing a Nexus 4 but aren’t quite sure at the moment if you’re going to be wanting one straight from Google, from T-Mobile, or from some third strange and mysterious source. We’ll be waiting for you!

T-Mobile roadmap leaks with 4G LTE set for March 27th

This week a leaked roadmap / product listing chart has been revealed by a user close to the action inside T-Mobile USA. This list shows not only a set of new handsets that will be appearing carried by the company soon, it tips off the date that T-Mobile’s 4G LTE network will be available as well. The Samsung Galaxy Exhibit (in some new flavor or another) has appeared on this list with the BlackBerry Z10 and the Galaxy S III with newly upgraded 4G LTE capabilities for T-Mobile’s unique network bands.

tmogo

This listing tipped with TMO News shows March the 27th to be a key date for T-Mobile, it being the home of every single one of the five listings included in this leak. Two different models of the Samsung T599 Galaxy Exhibit are listed with official date of reveal being set for the 20th of March. The first BlackBerry 10 all-touch device BlackBerry Z10 has been tipped for the same set of dates, releasing on the 27th.

The T-Mobile Sonic 2.0 Mobile HotSpot LTE has also been tipped for a March 20th reveal date and March 27th date of availability. The Samsung Galaxy S III LTE has also been tipped for a March 20th reveal date but a possibility of two different availability dates, one of them on the 27th, the other on the 3rd of April. Either way we’ve still got the hotspot appearing to be solid for the 27th, so we’ll keep confidence high for that date for launch.

How far the T-Mobile 4G LTE network will go in its infancy is no big secret – not more than a few major cities if we’re super lucky. It’s also been tipped that devices like the Samsung Galaxy Note II have 4G LTE capabilities with T-Mobile in their current state, lying dormant in wait for the strike. We’ll have to wait and see when the big day comes later this month to see how big this launch really will end up being!

T-Mobile boosts its New Orleans 4G coverage ahead of Super Bowl and Mardi Gras

New Orleans is going to be exciting place in February, with the Super Bowl coming up in a few days and Mardi Gras coming a couple weeks later. The city will be inundated with people, most of whom will be wielding smartphones, a fair number of which will probably be T-Mobile customers. In preparation, the carrier has given its 4G in the region a boost, ensuring more customers can access and utilize the network.

T-Mobile-logo-540x178

T-Mobile customers wanting to tweet, status update, upload, download, and otherwise share their real-life Super Bowl and Mardi Gras experiences in the digitalsphere will be happy to note that the carrier has determined areas around New Orleans where data and voice activity is expected to be high and has given the network a boost to ensure it can handle the extra load.

Likewise, to make sure that the T-Mobile users both inside and around the Superdome have access to the network, the carrier has installed a DAS (Distributed Antenna System) unit. The Weidenberg Park area will also benefit from what they refer to as COWs, which stands for Cells on Wheels. This will increase both voice and data load capacities in that specific area.

T-Mobile has also erected what it calls a Command Center, which is tasked with monitoring the network to make sure that all runs smoothly. Finally, it also has implemented special event parameters that will boost voice and data based on the fluctuating demand during the big events. As a service to customers, the carrier will also be provided a T-Mobile branded SUV that will roll around and serve as a charging station, as well as offering TVs and video games.

T-Mobile lighting up LTE network in Las Vegas very soon

Great news if you’re a T-Mobile subscriber, as the company may just be a few short days away from launching its 4G LTE network in Las Vegas. The folks at FierceWireless recently had a talk with a representative of T-Mobile, who said that the original plan was to launch LTE in Vegas during CES 2013. That plan ultimately feel through as T-Mobile needed to make a few last-minute changes to its network, but now the launch should be coming up very soon.

tmobile-540x346

How soon? The representative didn’t get into specifics, but the launch should be coming up within the next few days. If this turns out to be true, then Las Vegas could have T-Mobile LTE up and running as soon as next week, with other places like Kansas City following shortly afterward. What will be the first phones supported by T-Mobile’s LTE network? Apparently, the Galaxy S III and the Galaxy Note II are first up.

That seems to confirm a report we heard a while back that pegged T-Mobile’s Note II with dormant LTE functionality. At the time, T-Mobile said that it could potentially flip the switch on the Note II’s LTE using a simple update, so it looks like that will be just what happens when the company’s LTE network is up and running. Get excited, Galaxy owners, because it sounds like you’ll be the first to taste T-Mobile’s LTE speeds.

T-Mobile has a lot of catching up to do. Verizon should be completing its 4G LTE roll out by the middle of this year, while AT&T has been making announcements about new LTE markets left and right. T-Mobile expects to have 200 million people covered with its LTE network by the end of the year, so it should certainly get off to a good start. Keep it tuned here to SlashGear for more on T-Mobile’s LTE network.

T-Mobile Nexus 7 now available on Google Play

Up until now, Google was only selling the Nexus 7 with AT&T SIM cards bundled with it, but since the device is unlocked and runs on HSPA+ cellular technology, Google decided that there was no harm in offering T-Mobile SIM cards with the 7-inch tablet, so customers can now buy a Nexus 7 for T-Mobile on Google Play right now.

topper-580x386

Google added a new page for the Nexus 7, specifically for the new T-mobile version. It’s the same 32GB unlocked version as before, but this time it comes with a T-Mobile SIM card. So, just as with the AT&T version, you can now open up your tablet the minute you get it and connect right away to T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network.

Sadly, though, a 32GB version is only available for those wanting a T-Mobile variant, but we’re hoping a 16GB version will come to T-Mobile eventually. Google has a special relationship with the carrier, offering the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 only on T-Mobile, so we wouldn’t be surprised if the company brought more versions of their products to the carrier.

In related news, T-Mobile announced today that the Nexus 4 will be more widely available in its larger retail stores across the US, and the device will eventually reach all of the carrier’s retail stores in the coming weeks. Furthermore, the Nexus 4 will become available once again from T-Mobile’s website starting January 23.

T-Mobile Roundup: MLB partnership, Unlimited Nationwide 4G, and more

T-Mobile has been busy at CES today, making four big announcements about activities that further its goal in becoming “America’s Un-Carrier.” Among the announcements is a partnership with the MLB, as well as confirmation that the carrier is, indeed, launching an Unlimited Nationwide 4G plan sans-contract. Check out the rest of the announcements after the jump.

t-mobile_usa-580x4271113

On Saturday, we reported that T-Mobile was rumored to be rolling out an unlimited nationwide 4G no-contract plan for 4G Monthly subscribers. T-Mobile confirmed this today, announcing that the $70 monthly plan will be available starting tomorrow. Under the plan, users get unlimited data, with the first 5GB coming in at 4G speeds.

Speaking of 4G, T-Mobile has announced the 4G Connect, which aims to bring instantly-available connectivity to the carrier’s 4G network to a series of laptops, tablets, and ultrabooks. 4G Connect is slated to be included on certain Dell and HP laptops via Qualcomm technology. Depending on the device, users will receive 200MB of free data per month.

Select customers will notice an increase in call quality, with the carrier announcing that it has rolled out HD Voice to its entire nationwide network, offering a “dramatic improvement” in quality. According to T-Mobile, customers can expect more authentic sounding voice quality with less background noise. HD Voice only applies to callers using supported 4G smartphones, however.

Finally, there’s the MLB partnership, making T-Mobile the Official Wireless Sponsor of the Major League Baseball association. The multi-year deal comprises its MLB Advanced Media company, and under it, T-Mobile will supply an On-Field Communication System using the carrier’s 4G network. With the system, managers will be able to communicate with dugouts, and dugouts will be able to communicate with bullpens, among other things. The communication system will be rolled out throughout 2013.

T-Mobile Monthly4G customers to get unlimited data on January 9

T-Mobile Monthly4G customers rejoice; the carrier will be launching an unlimited 4G data plan on January 9th. The prepaid plan will be priced at $70 a month, and will provide the first 5GB of data at 4G speeds. This is a jump from the current $60 plan, which offers 2GB of data at 4G speeds, with it dropping down to 3G speeds after the cap is reached.

unlimited tmobile

Says T-Mobile, the plan is “perfect for video chat, streaming music/movies/TV and playing online games.” Of course, the plan comes sans-contract, one of its most alluring features. In addition to the unlimited data and 5GB at 4G speeds, the plan also offers unlimited talk and text. Obviously, one needs a 4G-capable smartphone for the plan.

For those who don’t do a lot of talking, T-Mobile already offers a plan with 5GB of data at 4G speeds for $30 per month, with the catch being that it only offer 100 minutes, along with unlimited text messaging. This particular plan is also limited to customers who acquired it through T-Mobile’s website or Wal-Mart. The $50 monthly plan only offers the first 100MB at 4G speeds.

T-Mobile offers a few different 4G-capable smartphones for their prepaid customers, including the Samsung Galaxy Exhibit, LG Optimus L9, the Galaxy S Blaze, and the Galaxy S II. On December 26, we reported that current rumors state the popular Galaxy S III with LTE support will be heading to T-Mobile sometime this year.

RIM and T-Mobile announce the BlackBerry Curve 9315

While RIM is gearing up to launch BlackBerry 10 at the end of the month, the company is still hard at work launching other phones in the meantime. Case in point, the company officially announced the BlackBerry Curve 9315 on T-Mobile’s network. It’s not a high-end device by any means, but it’s only $49 plus $10 per month for the Equipment Installment Plan.

bbcurve9315

The phone features a 3.2 MP camera, microSD memory card expansion and a full, physical QWERTY keyboard. RIM will launch on January 23, just seven days before the company unveils its first BlackBerry 10 phones. Pre-sales for the Curve 9315 begin on January 16, and the phone will be priced at $49 on top of a 20-month Equipment Installment Plan for $10 per month.

In case you were curious, the Curve 9315 runs off of BlackBerry 7.1 and includes 3G connectivity as well as a built-in FM radio. The phone itself isn’t anything new, since it looks like a classic BlackBerry device, but either way, those on T-Mobile wanting to get a cheap BlackBerry device now have a reason to do so.

RIM is set to launch BlackBerry 10 on January 30, and have a handful of devices ready to unleash. We’ve already taken a peek at some of the handsets thanks to a few leaked shots, so we already have an idea of what to expect, but nonetheless, we’ll be excited to see what RIM’s new operating system has to offer.

FCC filing shows the ZTE Grand X heading to T-Mobile

We first started to see ZTE‘s Grand X smartphone this past summer, following it up with a hands-on review of the rather sleek-looking handset. Now the device has made a new appearance, this time over at the FCC with a nice T-Mobile brand on its back, indicating that we’ll be seeing the handset show up at the carrier sometime soon. Nothing official has been announced.

1

Lending further support to what we see in the images is the filing itself, which mentions T-Mobile’s WCDMA 1700 AWS network. It is safe to assume, then, that the Grand X will be hitting the market via the carrier, although when that could happen and what price range we’re looking at is anybody’s guess. Thus far, nary a peep has been uttered in the rumorsphere about either of them.

2

ZTE’s Grand X features a nicely-sized IPS display at 4.3-inches with a resolution of 960 x 540. Inside you’ll find a dual-core 1GHz processor, and, assuming the specs are the same as the one we got our hands on back in July, there will be 4GB of internal storage space and 512MB of RAM. Around back you’ll find a 5-megapixel camera, and a 1,650mAH battery to run it all.

We took a peek through the user manual up on the FCC’s website, and nothing stands out as particularly different or new. While the specs are decent, the handset will run Android Ice Cream Sandwich, meaning there is officially nothing exciting about the device. Still, given ZTE’s usually low price-point, this could end up being a decent budget phone for those wanting a large display.
