The stock Nexus 7 peaks at a 1.3GHz clock speed when it’s at full burn. That’s certainly good enough for the $199 price tag, but eager adopters have just hit a new record in trying to wring out even more of a bang for the buck. Courtesy of a custom Elite kernel from XDA-Developers‘ Clemsyn, the Tegra 3 in the mini tablet will scale all the way to a heady 2GHz. You’d be right in suspecting that it leads to some dramatic speed boosts: the Nexus 7 at this pace can put a Transformer Prime to shame in common benchmarks, let alone most smartphones. Reaching the loftier heights of performance does require nerves of steel, however. The Elite kernel is very much a rough build that the creator doesn’t yet trust with the public, and NVIDIA’s processor is already known to get toasty under significantly added stress. There’s hope a refined kernel will make for a safer venture into unknown territory. If you can’t wait to throw at least some caution (and the warranty) to the wind, though, hit the second source link for code that will reach a slightly less melt-prone 1.8GHz.

We can’t say we didn’t see this coming, but we’re certainly excited at the potential that Amazon’s upcoming press event holds. The online mega-retailer is doing an press conference on Thursday September 6th, and while there’s not a lot in the way of info for the California-based event, we’re guessing the word “Kindle” might come up once or twice… What can we expect? A Fire sequel? Some illuminated e-ink readers? Time will tell — but no matter what it is, you can bet we’ll be there to cover it.

We’ve already seen many companion apps on mobile, but now TV Guide is diving in wholeheartedly with the next generation of its app for iOS devices. While the previous versions of TV Guide Mobile on iOS and Android let users create watchlists and get reminders, version 3.0 for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch is completely redesigned to make TV watching simpler with filtering for HD-only and favorite channels, links to streaming videos from sources like Hulu Plus, HBO Go, Crackle and iTunes — Netflix and Amazon are not on the list, although additional video sources are promised in the coming weeks. Like any good companion app in 2012 it also brings social networking features with check-ins and Twitter / Facebook integration and a trending social hot list based on what other users search for.

The downside compared to many of the apps from cable providers like Comcast or Time Warner, hardware manufacturers like TiVo or even other third parties like Dijit is the inability to use it to directly change the channel, but perhaps that’s in the next version. Those who were quite amused by the revelation of that Padcaster back at this year’s NAB might want to start prepping their wallets, as the creator’s announced it’s now shipping the filmmaking iPad companion. Notably, during our first encounter with the Padcatser, we were told it’d be selling for “about $200” once it was released — but, as it turns out, the SLR lens-mounting peripheral is being priced at a decent $149, while $40 more gets you the Padcaster / Lenscaster combo. That being said, it’s also worth noting the company’s dubbing this as a “special pricing” and for “a limited time only,” with no word on when such promo will be running out. Either way, you can grab one now at the source link below, though it appears you’ll have to wait between 2-4 weeks for it to show up at your lovely doorstep.

Archos’ new Coverboard-decked 101 XS tablet isn’t the end of its Android efforts for 2012. During our briefing, the manufacturer revealed that it has both a 9.7- and 8-inch model incoming. The duo are set to arrive before the end of the year, and will, aside from dimensions, pack the same list of features we saw on the bigger model. Each will come with its own, perfectly-sized keyboard cover and what’s likely to be the same raft of connectivity options seen on Archos‘ first XS tablet. The 8-inch model (80 XS) will pack a 1,024 x 768 resolution screen, while the larger 9.7-inch slab (97 XS) will house a 1,280 x 800 16:10 screen, a ratio that differentiates it, if only a little, from the slightly bigger model unveiled today. Archos is keeping some vital points — like pricing — a secret for now, but we’ll update with more details as soon as we hear them.
