TARDIS Engagement Ring Box is Shinier on the Inside

When you care enough to give the very best, you’d best give it in something as awesomely geeky as this custom TARDIS ring box, built by Modelmaker Paul Pape. Give it to your favorite companion and let them know how you feel.

Unlike the actual TARDIS, this one has rings inside instead of a control panel. And since these rings are a symbol of how your heart feels, it really is bigger on the inside. It holds two rings and even lights up. Paul created all of the wiring and switches himself, and the box is made out of micro plywood and sheets of his laser-cut wood door and window model pieces called Pop-Out Woodies.

He’s actually made a couple of versions of the box – one with doors that open to reveal a pair of rings, and the other that pops up from the top and holds a single ring.

When you give one of these, it says “I really like you. Care to step inside my big blue box?”

Paul makes all sorts of awesome custom engagement ring boxes, and you can order one for yourself for between $300 and $800(USD) depending on the complexity.

Silver TARDIS Necklace: Shinier on the Outside

Did you watch the Doctor Who Christmas special this week? Good stuff. And now that you are in the mood to watch more of the good Doctor – but have to wait – check out this piece of jewelry made by Josephine Ryan. It’s a classy TARDIS for your neck.

This TARDIS is made from sterling silver. Josephine is an artist in Norway. While she hasn’t yet figured out how to make it bigger on the inside, she has the outside looking amazing.

The Doctor should really give his companions gifts like this necklace before sending them back to their normal lives. Let’s be honest – He’s a bit cheap. Would it kill him to buy a lady some jewelry?

TARDIS Bookshelf: Silence in the Library

I admit, despite e-books being all the rage these days, I still love a good old-fashioned book in my hands. The problem becomes one of storage since they take up room. We need something that is bigger on the inside, like this Doctor Who TARDIS bookshelf.

This amazing TARDIS bookshelf was created by Tumblr user bowtiesandginghamshirts. As far as I can tell and it can hold the entire library of Gallifrey. I need a bookshelf like this one.

It even lights up and plays the Doctor Who theme. Wanna know how to make one? He has posted a How-To, so you can build your own. Just don’t expect it to hold as many books as THE Library.

DIY Tardis Looks Bigger On The Inside

diy tardis DIY Tardis Looks Bigger On The InsideIf you are a huge fan of the sci-fi Doctor Who series, then you will be well pleased to hear that a fan based in the US has come up with a model of the Tardis which was specially designed to look bigger on its inside compared to the outside. Greg Kumparak decided that he is no match for the laws of physics, and decided to rely instead on the wonders of augmented reality (AR) to get the job done. The actual interior of his DIY Tardis wooden model features a zebra-striped fabric which is downright weird, but when you hold up a smartphone in front of it that runs an AR app, it will show off a rather spacious interior that has been specially modelled on the ninth and tenth Doctors’ time machine.

The exterior of this DIY Tardis has been lovingly carved out of wood, followed by a blue coat of paint (you did not expect red, did you?), alongside a working light that has been attached to its top, before he decided to embark on something different by creating the illusion that the inside was huge. Greg said, “There’s a running gag in Doctor Who, wherein new characters are always dumbstruck by the Tardis being bigger on the inside than it appeared on the outside. Once I realised I had a rough idea of how to pull that off, I couldn’t not do it.”

Good for you, Greg!

DIY Doctor Who TARDIS Model Actually Made Bigger on the Inside

Next to its modest exterior, the second most notable thing about the time and space machine in Doctor Who is that it’s way bigger on the inside. It’s relatively easy to make a model or even a life-sized replica of its facade, but a clever fellow has managed to make a tiny TARDIS that looks bigger on the inside.

tardis augmented reality replica by greg kumparak

The replica was made by writer/DW fan/clever fellow Greg Kumparak. Initially he just wanted to make a small model of the TARDIS out of wood. After adding a working light on its roof, Greg thought he was really done with the project when an idea came to him: add an interior. Which is why he ended up not making an interior – at least, not a real one. I don’t want to spoil Greg’s neat handiwork, so just watch the video below to see what he did.

Teleport to Greg’s website for more details about his cool project.

Mini TARDIS really is bigger on the inside, thanks to augmented reality (video)

TARDIS

Once in a while we’d come across some cool DIY projects inspired by Doctor Who, the world’s longest-running sci-fi TV show, but nothing beats this little TARDIS that would actually make you gasp out the classic line: “It’s bigger on the inside!” Greg Kumparak, a former writer of sister site TechCrunch, initially built nothing more than just a convincing model of the iconic blue police box (with a functioning light at the top) by hand, but soon afterwards he wanted to somehow give it an interior as well.

By utilizing the Blender 3D creation suite (which was a first for Kumparak), Unity 3D engine and Qualcomm’s Vuforia AR SDK, the result is an Android app that renders the 3D interior atop the random wave-like pattern — visible once the door’s removed — on the TARDIS in real time (no pun intended). Once you’ve seen the demo video after the break, you’d probably agree that Kumparak’s only one sonic screwdriver away from becoming an honorary Time Lord. For more detail on how and why this project was put together, head over to Kumparak’s blog post.

This DIY Mini-Tardis Is Bigger On The Inside

If you’ve watched and enjoyed the program known as “The Good Doctor Who” in which an alien of some sort who flies around with his little, knobby robotic buddy (I’m not entirely clear on the details), you’ll be pleased to note that one fan, our own former employee Greg Kumparak, has built a real Tardis police box which, using some digital trickery, is really bigger on the inside.

Greg built his little Tardis around Thanksgiving and added a little light on top. Because he’s a Dr. Who fan, he found his device to be lacking in realism. He then programmed a 3D model of the inside of the Tardis – it looks like the inside of the Teletubby house – and added an augmented-reality element to make the room inside appear when you held up your smartphone. Bang: instant Tardis.

Greg quit working with us so he could start building things and this is one of his coolest little creations. I’m not a huge Dr. Who fan, but anyone who has enough love and intensity to build a cute little model and make it all the cooler is a good guy in my book. Now he just needs to make the Millennium Falcon from Star Trek.

Winnie the Who Cake: Tasty and Really Delicious in Stomach (TARDIS)

Now I’m not sure what the intersection is between Doctor Who and Winnie the Pooh fans is out there, but I think it’s actually a pretty big group. I certainly appreciate both of them. What makes this mashup between Who and Pooh even better of course is that it’s totally edible.

Inspired by a similar t-shirt design, this amazingly intricate cake was made by the talented pastry artists of Nerdache Cakes and shows Tigger and Piglet arriving from a recent journey through space and time in their “POLiSE BOCS” (complete with backwards letters). There’s also a jar of “Hunny” on the roof in place of the blue police light. The characters are made from fondant and chocolate, while the TARDIS is made from chocolate-hazelnut cake and triple-chocolate buttercream. Yum.

To me, it looks more like a sculpture than a cake, but it still is awesome, and way beyond my baking abilities. I certainly would have no problem eating the whole thing in one setting. It sure beats a pack of Jammie Dodgers.

Doctor Who Cupcakes: Sweeter on the Inside

These awesomely geeky Doctor Who cupcakes come from the fine folks at Cupcaketeer.com. They made these tasty treats for the 40th birthday of a friend. It’s friends like this that keep dentists in Porsches and yachts. But who cares, I would eat every last one of them and wash them down with the juice of a thousand Jelly Babies.
