Is HP showing the Slate 8 in its latest commercial? (video)

Is HP showing the Slate 8 in its latest commercial video

HP has acknowledged that it’s been working on a Windows 8 tablet; it just hasn’t mentioned whether or not the rumored Slate 8 is part of its plans. Imagine our surprise, then, when we’re told that HP’s 60-second “Make It Matter” commercial ends with an unannounced yet familiar-looking tablet right at the 56-second mark. There’s only a fleeting glimpse, but it shows a metallic-looking body with a large black antenna window — the combination of which would fit in with the Slate 8’s purported aesthetics. We’ve asked HP whether or not this is a clever teaser for a real product or just as conceptual as the rest of the ad, and we’ll let you know if we hear back on the subject. In the meantime, you can inspect the video evidence for yourself after the break.

[Thanks, Brian]

ZTE teases ‘advanced gaming smartphone’ set for availability in six days

ZTE teases 'advanced gaming smartphone' set for availability in six daysZTE must be onto us, for we love a good mystery. The company took to Twitter to tease “one of the most advanced gaming smartphones,” which it says will be in customer hands just six days from now. With so few breadcrumbs, it’s difficult to determine whether ZTE intends to unveil a genuinely new smartphone, or whether it’s merely hyping the release of a known product. While we’d love to see a brand new device — perhaps based on the Adreno 320 GPU — a plausible argument can also be made for the alternative. During Mobile World Congress, the company announced its flagship phone, the quad-core Tegra 3 Era, and the handset has been completely absent from the radar ever since. While the Era boasts only a 4.3-inch qHD display, it was said to arrive during the second half of this year — might the stars simply be aligning with a bit of marketing fluff? Only time will reveal this gamer’s true identity, but it seems we won’t have long to wait.

Google teases Web Lab beta, an intersection of art, technology and the internet

In case you didn’t get enough Google I/O news today, the Chrome team has just let loose a video teasing the launch of Web Lab beta. We aren’t exactly sure what the Mountain View crew is up to, but apparently, the Web Lab will be revealed through a series of experiments set to be launched later this summer. Apparently, the installations will make their debut at the London Science Museum, and from the video snippets we’ve seen, they’ll leverage the web and some custom machinery to create works of art. You don’t have to take our word for it, however, jus take a minute to see for yourself in the video after the break.
