Rokshield v3 iPhone 5 Case Is Two Cases in One

I like to keep my iPhone 5 protected, but there are times when I just don’t want a bulky case taking up too much space in my pocket. Then there are times when I know I’m going to be outside a lot and the chance of dropping the iPhone on the ground and breaking it are very high and I wish I had one of those bulky and highly protective cases. Sure, I could have two cases and swap the phone back and forth but not only is that a pain in the rear, it’s also expensive.

A new case has launched for the iPhone 5 called the Rokshield v3 and it’s two cases in one.

When using both case components you get protection for the phone on all six sides along with shock absorbing rubber on an outer bumper and a high-impact polycarbonate frame. The case also features an integrated anti-slip grip.

The cool thing about this case is that that shock absorbing outer bumper can be removed easily when you don’t need the extra protection allowing you to use only the slim polycarbonate case. Another cool feature is a magnetic option ($10) that can be attached to the back of the case allowing you to mount the iPhone onto a variety of metal surfaces.

The Rokshield v3 iPhone 5 case is available now for $39(USD), and comes in black or white, with a variety of color accents.

Dita von Teese Flaunts 3D-Printed Dress that Was Designed on an iPad

3D printing technology is amazing. People are already using 3D printers to make cookie cutters, gadgets, replacement partstoys and even robots. Now they’re moving forward into the realm of fashion by printing full-length dresses.

Here’s burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese sporting a custom and truly one-of-a-kind 3D-printed creation.

3D Printed Dress

The dress was a product of a collaboration between designer Michael Schmidt and architect Francis Bitonti. They didn’t just pull this sexy number out of their head, because it’s actually based on the Fibonacci sequence.

When they were ready with their design, they sent it off to 3D-printing service Shapeways, who printed out the gown’s seventeen meshed pieces. They assembled the parts to form one dress and voila – instant sexiness.

Shapeways designer Duann Scott had this to say about the role of 3D printing in fashion: “Traditionally, all garments are either a weave or a stitch. And with 3-D printing, we can … introduce something completely different. So we can grow designs rather than just using something that’s centuries-old technology. It’s a whole way to move forward in fashion and clothing and textiles.”

Trakdot Luggage Tracking Thingamajig Pre-Orders Begin

Back in early January, we talked about the Trakdot luggage tracking device. At the time, we knew a lot of the details on the product with the exception of one of the most essential – when you could buy it. That final piece of the puzzle has now been unveiled.

GlobaTrac has announced that the Trakdot tracking system is now available for pre-order and will ship in late June. The pricing remains the same at $49.99(US). The device uses a cellular network to triangulate your bag’s location rather than GPS.

There is an activation fee of $8.99, but those the pre-order before April 27 won’t have to pay that particular fee. The annual service fee is $12.99 for a year of cellular-based tracking. You have to be seriously concerned about the whereabouts of your bag to resort to this sort of equipment. I have a much easier method of keeping track of my bag, I simply don’t fly anywhere where everything I need can’t fit in a carry-on.

Minecraft Hue Project Adds Ambient Light that Matches the Game’s Day/Night Cycle

Mobile developer Jim Rutherford’s son Owen loves to play Minecraft. To enhance his Owen’s gaming experience – or perhaps to gently remind him how long he’s been playing – Jim made it so that lamp on Owen’s desk changed color and intensity to match the game’s day and night cycle.

The hack is made possible largely because of the new Philips Hue LED bulb, which can produce light in a variety of colors and intensities and can be controlled over the Internet. The other half of the project is an iPad app that Jim himself wrote. The app not only controls the LED bulb, it also allows Owen to match the time on the app with his game. Skip to around 3:35 to see the hack in action:

Jim has posted the source code for the app on Github. He also said that he’s going to submit the app to the Apple App Store. If it’s passed, he won’t charge a cent for the app. Which is nice, considering the Philips Hue is freakin’ expensive.

No Electricity And Need A Light? Then SOCCKET To Me!

A SOCCKET Ball With An LED Light Plugged InA group of Harvard alumni said let there be light. After some serious work and designing, and a few fun games of soccer there was light. It is a fairly simple idea to bring electricity and light to areas of the world where such things are scarce. It comes in the form of a soccer ball called SOCCKET that captures kinetic energy during play. Just a quick half hour of play can power an LED light for up to three hours.

MyIDKey Puts All of Passwords at the Tip Of Your Finger, Literally.

It’s better to be safe than be sorry when it comes to choosing a password. The problem isn’t whether you can come up with a challenging enough password, though. Rather, it’s whether or not you’ll be able to remember it, given you probably already have a number of other accounts and passwords to remember, and the more complex the password becomes, the more difficult it becomes to recall. But now you don’t have to do it alone, because myIDkey can help you.

MyIDKey

myIDkey is a handy device that stores all your passwords and other sensitive account information, so you can access it whenever you need to. The cool thing is that it’s fitted with a biometric scanner, so the info can only be accessed after you press your thumb (or any other finger of your choice, actually) onto the scanner, preventing others from accessing your sensitive information – unless they manage to get their hands on your hands, that is. All of your data is encrypted with military grade AES256 encryption, and offers fail-safe automatic deletion after multiple failed attempts to access the data. Accessing your passwords is as easy as placing your finger on the sensor and speaking the password you need access to. It’s really quite brilliant.

The pocket-sized gadget doubles as a flash drive so you can use it to store and secure your files as well. myIDkey is currently up for funding on Kickstarter, where a minimum pledge of $99(USD) will get you a myIDkey of your very own. As it stands, the device will ship with 8GB of storage, but if the Kickstarter project exceeds its next stretch goal of $400,000, all of them will ship with 16GB.
