Clutch.io joins Twitter’s Growth and International team

Twitter has acquired yet another company, this time buying out Clutch.io. The deal was announced today, with the Clutch.io team saying that they will be joining Twitter’s Growth and International team. They also say that they’re starting work at Twitter immediately, so it seems that Twitter is wasting no time in taking advantage of the Clutch.io team’s talents.

Clutch.io offered A/B testing to iOS and Android developers, and also offered Clutch Framework, which helps developers build apps. “Offered” is the operative word there, as Clutch.io won’t be supporting these apps much longer – Twitter is shutting down the company’s A/B testing and Framework app. Clutch.io says in a blog post that it will continue supporting these services until November 1, and in the coming weeks, the company will be providing resources that will allow developers to run these programs on their own servers.

So, Clutch’s current services won’t be going away entirely, they just won’t be supported or hosted on Clutch.io servers anymore. In anticipation of this “shut down” of sorts, Clutch.io has stopped accepting new customers, so if you were ready to jump in and see what Clutch.io had to offer, we’re sorry to say you’re out of luck.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed, and we’re not sure what exactly the Clutch.io team will be doing at Twitter. This has to be a pretty exciting time for Clutch.io however, as it’s still a very young company, so to have its worth recognized so quickly is undoubtedly leaving a smile on a few faces today. Be sure to check out our story timeline below for more posts on Twitter’s recent happenings!

Google tipped to acquire travel brand Frommer’s

Google is buying travel brand Frommer’s, according to The Wall Street Journal. The search engine is reportedly purchasing the brand from John Wiley & Sons in order to bolster its search results regarding local places and attractions. In case you’re not familiar with Frommer’s, it provides a detailed database of places to visit in various cities across the world, as well as hotel, restaurant, and store listings.

The price for the deal hasn’t been disclosed, and it’s not entirely clear if Frommer’s will continue to publish its material or if it will be exclusive to Google, but the deal will be finalized soon. The Frommer’s brand could be integrated into Zagat listings, however. Google purchased Zagat back in September 2011 in order to display the Zagat ratings on search results for hotels and restaurants, so adding additional venues into the mix with Frommer is a smart move.

When asked to comment on the sale, the managing director of product management for Zagat, Bernardo Hernandez, said: “Our commitment is to keep things as they are today and once we combine operations, we’ll know better what the future looks like.” He went on to say, “Consumers need fresh accurate information. When you add information you can trust to phone numbers and addresses as part of the Google search experience, it enables users to convert their intentions into actions.”

Google looks to be stocking up on travel related information and listings in an effort to keep competitors such as Foursquare and Facebook at bay. The company has been displaying its own user submitted reviews for services and places for some time, but has recently made an effort acquire additional services to display more detailed scores and reviews. Google has also promoted travel as a part of Google Now, with the predictive search assistant displaying information for local transportation and flights.

President Obama set to congratulate Curiosity team

NASA captured the world’s imagination with the successful deployment of the Curiosity lander on Mars, and now the President of the United States, Barack Obama, will call the space agency to congratulate the members of mission control. According to Space.com, the President will call the team at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California at 11am EST. Numerous scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory designed and built the Curiosity, striving to keep it active for its two-year mission on the surface of Mars.

The President seems to have taken great interest in the mission in general, issuing the following statement shortly after the successful landing of Curiosity on August 5th: “The successful landing of Curiosity – the most sophisticated roving laboratory ever to land on another planet – marks an unprecedented feat of technology that will stand as a point of national pride far into the future. It proves that even the longest of odds are no match for our unique blend of ingenuity and determination.”

Shortly after the rover successfully landed on August 5th, it began beaming back images of the surface of Mars to scientists at NASA. Curiosity has several cameras onboard, with images taking 14 minutes to make their way back to Earth, but they should provide invaluable insight into the planet’s surface and geographical makeup. Video can also be recorded on the rover in 720p, but at a reduced rate of 10 frames per second.

NASA has released numerous photos from Curiosity’s exploration so far including a 360 degree panoramic view from the rover’s highest resolution camera. More images will continue to flood in from Curiosity as it begins to explore additional terrain, but in the meantime the full landing video is online should you want to relive the magic again.

Lenovo’s Windows RT tablet will be ARM-based IdeaPad Yoga

Last week it was reported that Lenovo was working on a convertible tablet that would run Windows RT, Microsoft’s ARM-based version of Windows 8. The concept was the same as the IdeaPad Yoga first shown off at CES 2012, but instead of running full-blown Windows 8 and using Intel’s Core i5 chip, the tablet would be utilizing one of NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 processors and running Windows RT. ABC News corroborates the report, saying that the tablet will carry the IdeaPad Yoga branding.

Lenovo’s plan is to release two versions of the convertible tablet, with the NVIDIA-based version to feature “double the battery life of the Intel version.” According to ABC News, the tablet should hit the market around the same time as the general Windows 8 release on October 26th. At a Lenovo event last Wednesday, the company dropped a hint that that it was working on a Windows RT product, but declined to give specifics.

The IdeaPad Yoga that was shown off earlier in the year was a convertible ultrabook featuring one of Intel’s ULV Core processors. The device functions as a normal laptop, but the screen can be folded backwards, transforming the notebook into a tablet, allowing users to interact with Windows 8 using the touchscreen. The Intel version is said to cost around £1,199 (~$1,880).

ASUS is also working on a similar product, having shown off the TAICHI at Computex back in June. Featuring an Intel Ivy Bridge processor, the TAICHI comes with dual 13.3-inch and 11.6-inch displays, both running a 1080p resolution. The 13.3-inch screen serves as a regular display when in notebook mode, while the 11.6-inch display serves as a touchscreen (complete with stylus support) when the laptop is closed.

Upcoming uTorrent update will feature adverts

uTorrent is one of the world’s most popular BitTorrent clients, with most users preferring it over other solutions due to its lightweight operation and low memory footprint. BitTorrent Inc has slowly been adding new features into the client, upsetting some users in the process, but the latest change will no doubt be controversial. TorrentFreak reports that adverts will soon be integrated into the client that will should generate significant amounts of additional revenue for the company.

BitTorrent Inc took to the uTorrent forums yesterday to make the quiet announcement, indicating that adverts will be added to the client in a coming update within the next few weeks. Specifically, the company will offer featured torrents at the top of the torrent list, allowing artists and studios to promote their content to a huge number of users: around 125 million, according to TorrentFreak

The adverts will have several tiers. The first will promote any new features or services from BitTorrent Inc. The second will come from “offer partners,” which might include security products or privacy services, while the third will advertise independent artists. Anyone using the updated version of uTorrent won’t be able to turn offers off, however, instead only being able to skip any unwanted ads.

BitTorrent Inc says that the change won’t affect users privacy, but offers will be targeting based on IP address locations. As always, the company is trying to find a balance between offering free software and generating a healthy income, although TorrentFreak has been informed by a source that current revenue falls between $15 and $20 million, with the company “backed by millions in venture capital.”

Social network App.net reaches $500k funding goal

Dalton Caldwell, the mastermind behind App.net, took to his blog yesterday to announce that the team had reached its funding goal for the project. The App.net alpha project managed to hit its $500,000 goal with two days left to go, and has amassed over $644,000 from around 9,700 backers as of the time of writing. Payment tiers include a $50 option that allows regular users to either reserve a custom username or register their existing Twitter handles, while the $100 option is aimed at developers, providing access to various API tools as well as documentation.

App.net was created as an alternative to Twitter, with Dalton Caldwell believing that the social network was moving in the wrong direction with regards to its API access as well as monetization of users. Caldwell asserts that advertising isn’t the only business model that a social network can be funded by, with App.net created on the premise that users will pay for access to a service with real time feeds and open APIs.

The project was slow to gather momentum at first, but a burst of publicity over the past week helped push the project to its $500,000 goal. Backers of the project have paid for a year of access upfront, but the ultimate goal when the service launches is to have users pay a small fee on a monthly basis. It’s a risky strategy, as most users seem to be content with ad-based serices, but the fact the app.net has managed to reach its goal indicates that there are those out there who are willing to pay for a cleaner experience.

The project still has about a day left to go, so there’s still time to put forward your $50 and secure a username. If you don’t feel like parting with a lump sum of cash upfront, then you’ll be able to register with the service normally when the alpha test is over, but there’s no indication just yet when that will be. An iOS app has been planned for the social network, however, and Caldwell mentions that several third-party applications are already in development thanks to the available API.

DIY 3D Tracking Interface: Leap on the Cheap

The Leap motion controller is one of the most hyped gadgets unveiled this year, and it really is promising. But if you can’t wait until next year to have a 3D tracking interface, MAKE knows a way to make one using readily available tools.

diy 3d touchless tracking interface

The project is based on the RC time constant, which in simple terms is the time it takes to charge a capacitor. It has three cardboard plates covered with aluminum foil and connected to an Arduino Uno. When your hand (or any part of your body) approaches the plates, the capacitance of the plates change. A complementary program then interprets the changes to determine your hands’ position.

Head to MAKE for the full instructions for making the sensor. Obviously it’s not as accurate as the Leap or the Kinect, but at the very least you’ll have built something that show how capacitive sensors work. I’m sure more advanced tinkerers will find ways to make it more functional.

From "Shock ‘N Awe" to "I Was Here," World Humanitarian Day Evolves

From 9/11 to Shock'N Awe to "I Was Here," World Humanitarian Day EvolvesWorld Humanitarian Day
set annually for August 19th was originally designated to recognize
humanitarian personnel and those who had lost their lives working for
humanitarian causes. It’s origin was a direct result of a massive
bombing attack of Iraq by America and its allies, escalating on March
21, 2003. Known in military parlance as "Shock ‘n Awe," and taken from
Sun Tzu’s "The Art of War"
(544-496 BC), it’s a military doctrine based on the use of overwhelming
power to paralyze an adversary’s perception of the battlefield and
destroy its will to fight back.

NASA’s Curiosity expecting dust storms on surface of Mars soon

The Curiosity rover was sent to Mars to document a lot of different things, but one of the things it will be examining on are the weather patterns on the surface of Mars. Today NASA tells USA Today that it’s expecting mostly clear – if not a bit chilly – conditions on the red planet, with NASA scientist Manuel de la Torre saying that Curiosity can expect “balmy, minus-20-degree temperatures” during the day. At night, that already low temperature will plummet, eventually ending up around “minus-200 degrees Fahrenheit.”

If Curiosity only had the cold to deal with, it would be something of a pleasant getaway. These calm conditions aren’t expected to last much longer, however, as dust devils will begin to wreak havoc on the planet’s surface as the seasons change from winter to spring and then eventually summer. The dust devils aren’t even the worst of it either, as they can grow into massive dust storms that swallow the entire planet.

It’s those dust storm that de la Torre is interested in, and the Curiosity is well-equipped to study them. It comes loaded with tools that can measure wind speed and direction, air temperature, humidity, ground temperature, and air pressure. This weather data that’s collected on the surface will help NASA scientists determine if Mars is suitable for life, or if it ever was at some point in the past.

Ever since the Curiosity rover landed on the surface of Mars at the beginning of the week, we’ve been treated to one exciting news piece after another. True, talking about the weather on Mars may not be as exciting as seeing images of the surface, but this research is going to do a lot in helping us understand the red planet, and that is definitely something to look forward to. Be sure to check out our story timeline below for more posts on the Curiosity rover!

Motorized LEGO Tumbler and Bat: Not The Toys We Need, But The Toys We Really Need

Expert LEGO builder Peerk Kreuger aka mahjqa is back with a timely creation that will make you soil your BatUndies. Kreuger made a couple of motorized versions of the Tumbler as well as of The Bat.

The Tumblers – available in Batman Black and Bane Brown Camo – have LED lights and seem to handle rough terrain quite well. The Bat has moving propellers but I’m pretty sure it doesn’t actually fly.

Check out Kreuger’s Flickr page for more pictures. He’ll also probably upload the build instructions for both vehicles on his website, but this time he’s also put up proposals on Cuusoo for each vehicle. Will these cars remain unofficial vigilantes or will they be recognized superheroes of LEGO Gotham? You got the power. Make it happen.
