CEATEC 2013: “Smart Innovation” in Japan

Japan’s largest IT and electronics trade show has always been anticipated as an event that showcases some of the best that the country has to offer in consumer electronics. Compared to 2012, there were about 40% fewer exhibitors in attendance, as well as a couple of absences (noticeably KDDI, who was rumored to attend this year’s event), which may have contributed to the slightly subdued atmosphere this year.

The theme for this year’s show encouraged submissions of technologies, products and services aimed at making people’s lives both richer and more comfortable. Titled ‘Smart Innovation: Technology for Future Society and Lifestyles’, CEATEC 2013 was all about what was “Smart”. There were presentations on “smart community”, “smart networking”, and “smart devices”, and a lot of exhibitors displayed innovations that built on this idea of more seamless, enriched living facilitated by technology.

“Smart Devices” was a theme heavily repeated in the “digital display” category. Ultra HD, big screen displays boasting 4K or 8K resolution were presented alongside new display concepts, like Sharp’s IGZO “frameless” screen.

On the content side of things, exhibitors took advantage of these new developments and presented content management systems and services aimed at creating a user experience specifically designed for digital/”smart” TV.  NHK showcased Hybridcast, a system that enables users to access interactive, information-rich content across multiple devices via a broadband network and HTML5 interface. Similarly, Toshiba’s  REGZA TimeOn is a suite of services that uses the cloud to make the television experience more interactive. For example, viewers can enable a Twitter feed tied to a particular channel’s hashtag, which will then display what other viewers are saying about a particular program in real-time.

Mobility was also a big theme in this year’s conference, with mobility device demonstrations taking up a large area in Halls 7 and 8. Following an announcement that it would bring autonomous cars to the market by 2020, Nissan demonstrated its Autonomous Drive Vehicle (‘Leaf’). A three-lap course for the car to self-navigate through was set up, and required the vehicle to pass by parked cars as well perceive stop signs and handle crossing intersections. Although demonstrated in a restricted space, the car can drive up to speeds of about 70 km/h, and utilises a radar system to anticipate obstacles within a 80m perimeter.

In the same space, Toyota and Honda both demonstrated smaller-scale personal mobility vehicles: the Winglet , and the Uni-Cub respectively.

A number of the bigger exhibitors, including Mitsubishi, Toyota and Toshiba used the Lifestyle and Society Stage to showcase displays promoting smart grid systems for the home, or HEMS (Home Energy Management System). HEMS collects real-time data on power usage and presents it visually, enabling consumers to easily track, monitor and ultimately adjust their energy consumption levels accordingly.

In a similar vein, “Smart Homes” were concepts presented as part of next-generation living. “Smart Appliances” such as washing machines which could send consumers status-updates, and air-conditioners which could be controlled outside the home through smartphones, were often presented as part of a networked web of devices that functioned with HEMS to not only ensure a more pleasant living environment, but a more energy efficient lifestyle as well.

Healthcare was also a category that garnered a lot of attention. Building on the increasing popularity of using quantified data to self-monitor aspects of daily life, Omron showcased a series of inter-connectable devices that helps an individual keep track of their body weight, temperature, sleep patterns, heart rate and blood pressure. A majority of the products were designed with the ability to wirelessly send collected data to a central location, which also makes it easier for third parties, such as doctors, to monitor an individual and intervene if necessary.

While several other companies, including Nordic Semiconductor, Goo Karadalog, as well as Korean exhibitor Dae Kyoung Ind.Co. (above) also offered their own personal health monitoring devices, the most noticeable of these was Sharp’s Healthcare Support Chair. A rather futuristic-looking take on the traditional doctor’s examination chair, Sharp’s spherical contraption can measure a person’s weight, blood pressure, heart rate and temperature all in one sitting. In addition, it can also determine how healthy a patient’s blood vessels are and assess their body balance. All of this information is displayed on a shield of multi-paneled screens, and the information can also be sent straight to your doctor.

Other products and services which made use of wireless data transmission and cloud storage were SFK Medical Company’s “suisui Nurse”, an application that allows nurses conducting home visits to directly send vital information as well as pictures to a doctor, and Fujitsu’s “Petcloud” which collects health-related data about your pet throughout its lifetime. There were also a number of “babysitter” robots that provide companionship and in extreme cases monitor  an individual in need of care such as the elderly or young children such as NEC’s PaPeRo or Fujisoft’s “Palro”.

And like any type of fairs CEATEC makes no exception to the award giving practice with twenty-four awards being given out during the five days event. The CEATEC organizers selected eleven grand-Prix winners and semi grand-Prix winners in Products, Network & services, key technology and core technology categories as well as a Review panel special award that went to Keio University’s Katsura laboratory part of the department of system design engineering. Two special awards were given out by the Ministry of Internal Affars and communication and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to in the same order, NTT docomo for its Next-generation mobile communication system (5G) and Kyocera corporation for Piezo film speaker “smart sonic (R) sound”. Finally an independent panel of journalist versed in either I.T. or consumer electronics gave out awards to companies for innovative product or concepts that would have the most influence on the U.S. market the grand-Prix of that award was given to Nissan motors co.,ldt for its Autonomous drive vehicle.

PlayStation 4 Controller Works with PS3 Console: Shared Buttons

Good news for the PlayStation nation. It seems like the Dualshock 4 controller designed for the PlayStation 4 works with the PlayStation 3 console too. YouTuber Udetto, who writes for German gaming site Computer Bild Spiele, discovered the backwards compatibility while fiddling with a debug version of the PlayStation 4.

There is a catch however. Udetto says the controller will only work with the PS3 if it’s plugged in to the console via USB, which means that it won’t work with PS3 games that require you to play wirelessly. I don’t know of any game that has that requirement, but apparently FIFA 14 is one of those games. That’s really odd. Does that mean you can’t charge a PS3 controller and play FIFA 14 at the same time?

We should remember that Udetto’s discovery was with a prototype controller, and despite his positive findings it’s possible that the controller won’t work with many PS3 games. But since we can buy the controller without shelling out for the entire PS4, here’s hoping Sony can make this backwards compatibility official.

iPad mini Retina Price, Release Date and Specs Announced

If you’ve been holding off on buying Apple’s iPad mini because you wanted a Retina resolution screen, then wait no further. Today, Apple announced the new iPad mini, which still offers a compact 7.9-inch screen, but now has a razor-sharp Retina display.

While the new iPad mini Retina hasn’t changed much on the outside, it now has a gorgeously sharp 2048×1536 resolution Retina screen – the same resolution as the current 9.7-inch iPad models. This means it can run all Retina apps as-is, only they’ll look even sharper since the pixels are even more dense.

It still measures just 0.29″ thick, and weighs just 0.73 pounds, just a hair heavier than the original iPad Mini.

ipad mini retina 2 620x289magnify

Under the hood, the iPad Mini Retina got a big CPU boost, using the new A7 64-bit CPU found in the iPhone 5S and iPad Air. It also has the M7 motion coprocessor along for the ride. Battery life for the iPad Mini Retina is rated at 10 hours, which is pretty solid, given the fact that it’s so small, and now has to push 4x as many pixels to its display.

ipad mini retina 3 620x357magnify

It also has a 5MP iSight camera, Facetime HD camera, dual microphones and MIMO Wi-Fi for improved wireless throughput. All iPad minis now come with iOS7 and a huge number of pre-installed apps, as well as iMovie, iPhone, GarageBand, Keynote, Numbers and Pages – for free.

For all practical purposes, the iPad Mini Retina is the same tablet as the new iPad Air, just with a smaller display and battery. In fact, the iPhone 5S, iPad Air and iPad mini Retina are virtually the same devices, with the exception of the display size, lower resolution camera, and lack of fingerprint sensor on the iPads.ipad mini retina side 620x243magnify

It’s available in both Silver and White or Space Grey and Black colors. Pricing for the new iPad Mini Retina in the Wi-Fi version is $399, $499, $599 and $699 (USD) for 16GB, 32GB, 64GB and 128GB models, respectively, and the 4G LTE models going for $529, $629, $729 and $829 in the same memory configurations. This makes it a bit more expensive than the original iPad mini, which you can now get for as little as $299.

Apple hasn’t announced an exact date for the iPad Mini Retina to hit stores, but does say it will be available in late November.

iPad Air (iPad 5) Price, Release Date and Specs Announced

Those of you in the market for a new iPad, Apple just made your day, announcing new and improved versions of both of their major tablets. The full-size iPad, got a boost in speed, camera quality and slimmed down at the same time. It also got a new name, the iPad Air.

ipad air 1 620x577magnify

The first thing you’ll notice about the new iPad is how much thinner it is than the last generation. The iPad Air measures just 7.5mm vs 9.4mm – 20% thinner.

But the biggest difference is how much lighter it is, weighing just 1 pound, vs. 1.4 pounds for the last model.

The new model still has a 9.7″ Retina 2048×1536 resolution screen, but the bezel width has been substantially decreased, measuring 43% smaller than the last-gen iPad. The touchscreen also has a new touch-rejection algorithm that can detect when you’re accidentally touching the edge of the screen from the slimmed-down bezel, or if you really are interacting with the screen.

In addition, the iPad Air sports the fast 64-bit A7 processor found in the iPhone 5S. It also comes with the same M7 motion processor. It’s also got MIMO antenna technology for improved wireless throughput. Part of slimming down the iPad Air meant a smaller, lighter battery, but Apple still claims the device can run for 10 hours on a charge. Keep in mind that the current gen’s battery has 42.5 watt-hours, while the iPad Air’s battery is 32.4 watt-hours. Only time will tell if the faster and more efficient hardware of the new model will get shorter run time off of a much smaller battery.

The iPad Air has also got a shiny new 5-megapixel iSight camera with 1080p video support, improved backside illumination, and a new FaceTime HD camera with larger pixels for improved video quality. Also, it’s the first time the iPad comes with dual microphones. All iPad Airs come with iOS7 and a huge number of pre-installed apps, as well as iMovie, iPhone, GarageBand, Keynote, Numbers and Pages – for free.

Like the iPhone 5S, you can get the new iPad 5 in Silver and White or Space Grey and Black. Unfortunately, there’s no gold version – at least not yet.

Pricing for the new iPad Air is the same as previous generations, with the Wi-Fi version selling for $499, $599, $699 and $799 (USD) for 16GB, 32GB, 64GB and 128GB models, respectively, and the 4G LTE models going for $629, $729, $829 and $929 in the same memory configurations.

The iPad Air will be available for ordering in the U.S., Europe, China, and Japan, among other countries on November 1 from the Apple Store.

Clockee Talkee Alarm Clock & Walkie-Talkie: Wake Up, Copy That

Most of the alarm clocks we’ve featured here differentiate themselves based on how they wake people up. Milad Modir’s Clockee Talkee has a feature that you wouldn’t expect from an alarm clock: a two-way radio intercom. But if you think about it, it can be a really handy gadget for both the home and the office.

clockee talkee alarm clock walkie talkie 620x305magnify

Clockee Talkee has a simple and compact design. It comes in pairs, but you can buy a whole bunch of them and send a message to all other units from one of the devices. You can also switch to one of eight channels if you need to have a private chat with just one Clockee Talkee user. One unit can reach other Clockee Talkees within 0.6 mi, and you can unplug it and put three AAA batteries inside if you want to use it on the go. Aside from its clock and intercom, it also has a built-in thermometer. You can also set it so that its LED shows the time and temperature when you clap.

Pledge at least $59 (USD) on Indiegogo to get a pair of Clockee Talkees. Over and out.
