Robots Learn to Hack

One new
robot R2B2, or Robotic Reconfigurable Button Basher is the forfront of the new computer hacking, by allowing a robot to make brute force attacks to smart phones. It isn’t much to look at, the
main componet is a set of robotic fingertips that actually do the key
entering. The robot has, thus far, been used to hack into Android phones
with a fair rate of success.

How To Create Your Own Livestream On A Budget

Xbox Kinect LivestreamSo, you want to start streaming, do you? Believe it or not, it’s actually a lot simpler (and considerably more cost-effective) than most people believe. So long as you’ve got a system that can handle it, it’s most definitely something you can do – even on a budget.

Google Introduces Chromecast For Your TV

ChromecastChromecast promises to provide a very low cost option to bring your online media to your TV, regardless of the device you use, from a PC, Mac, tablet or phone. Available for $35, it makes a strong competitor to current offerings.

The Gift of Portable Humidity

Amazing Grace Amazing Humidifier

The human body is sensitive to its environment. We have a range within which we feel comfortable – a certain temperature range; a certain illumination range, a certain level of sound, pressure and even humidity. Alter any of this too much or for too long and the body will protest. In a dry environment, like an air-conditioned office, the moisture from our body is extracted to the environment and our skin dries.

Stretching the 3D Printing Evolution

3D Printing Evolution

We all know that 3D printing, or additive printing as some would call it, is the new in thing. For many of us who have seen the promo videos of the various brands and start ups that are rapidly filling up this space, the idea is both novel as it is borne out of common sense. But it is just the beginning. At the moment the 3D printer is merely an arm that sequentially lays heated plastic in layers.

NFC Ring: Rings Open Doors

Near-field communication or NFC is a wonderful standard for mobile devices. It’s more secure than RFID and a lot easier to use compared to Bluetooth. I’m not sure why it hasn’t taken off yet, but that may soon change if devices such as John McLear’s invention take off.

McLear’s NFC Ring has two NFC inlays. The idea is to use one for public purposes while the other one is for private applications. So what can you do with it? For starters, you can install NFC-enabled door locks like Lockitron at home and forget about carrying keys. Just tap the ring to lock or unlock your door.

You can also do the same if you have an NFC-enabled mobile device.

Each inlay can store up to 144 bytes of data, enough to share links to websites or personal data.

Pledge at least £22 (~$34 USD) on Kickstarter to get an NFC Ring as a reward. If you have access to a 3D printer, you can print your own ring then pledge just £8 (~$12) for the NFC inlays alone. Or forget the ring, pledge for the inlays then embed them in your skin.

IBIS Enters Robot Surgery

A team at the Tokyo Institute of Technology has created a
robot surgical system, known as IBIS that is designed to undertake the same
function as the da Vinci system at a much lower cost to the facility. This new competitor comes at a good time, when the current leader is having PR problems.

Drone Controlled in First Person Via Oculus Rift: Drone’s Eye View

The Oculus Rift will most likely lead to a new genre of first-person games, but it could also make drones a lot more fun to use. For his master’s thesis, Jonathan of Intuitive Aerial is working on Oculus FPV, a drone camera system that streams 3D video that can be viewed with the Rift.

The system uses a Black Armored Drone carrying a laptop and two cameras. The laptop compresses the feed from the two cameras and sends them to a second computer on the ground via Wi-Fi. It’s a crude setup, but it works. According to Intuitive Aerial the current rig has a range of about 160′ to 320′ when using Wi-Fi cards. The video latency is 120ms, good enough for the viewer to pilot the drone at the same time.

That shot of the pilot wearing the Rift reminds me of Ghost in the Shell. Intuitive Aerial said it will improve Oculus FPV if it receives enough interest from potential clients. They should incorporate the MYO armband to Oculus FPV make it more fun to use.

Robots Gain Glow Skin

A team of
researchers at the University of California at Berkeley have created the world
first light up robot skin. The robot works with a simple
touch. When the skin is pressed it glows. The system has been dubbed eSkin and
it users a series of organic light-emitting diodes to generate the light.

Aireal Airgun Lets Players “Feel” Virtual Objects

Aireal ThumbDisney Research has been hard at work on a very exciting new piece of technology. It’s called Aireal, and it lets you ‘feel’ virtual objects. Chalk up one more step towards virtual reality, and one more into the realm of science fiction.
