You may reach the internet via newfangled wireless connection most of the time, but all those ones and zeros cross the oceans the same way old-fashioned telephone connections did: by undersea cables. The map masters at TeleGeography have charted the course the internet takes to cross the seas in 2014, and the result is fascinatingly complex.
The Internet connects us all, but it’s easy to take for granted what a crazy accomplishment that is. After all, plenty of us live on different land-masses. TeleGeography’s 2013 Submarine Cable Map Plots 244 Cable Systems Of The World
Posted in: Today's ChiliTeleGeography, a telecommunications research and consulting firm that specializes in international networks, service providers, and undersea cables, has released an updated version of its Submarine Cable Map. TeleGeography’s 2013 Submarine Cable Map features a new design that is inspired by star charts and antique maps. I got to admit that it looks pretty cool. The new map also historically hints a connection between submarine cables and cartography, plotting around 244 – 232 in-service and 12 planned – active cables including ones expected to go live next year.
