Apple TV update brings Bluetooth keyboard and “Up Next”

Apple released iOS 6.1 today for iOS devices, bringing with it some improvements to Siri and enhancements to iTunes Match. However, the company also quietly outed an update for Apple TV, which introduces Bluetooth keyboard support, a new feature called “Up Next,” and improvements to iTunes Match as well.

Both second- and third-generation Apple TV units are receiving the update over-the-air, and for those who have been yearning for Bluetooth keyboard support are finally getting it. Users will now be able to type and search with ease without having to use the remote. Of course iPhone and iPod Touch users can use their devices, but those without an iOS device were left in the cold until now.

The update also brings a new feature called “Up Next,” which was introduced not too long ago in iTunes 11. The new features queues up content for you, similar to a playlist, and plays each piece of content automatically one after the other. This is surely a big feature for not only iTunes users, but Apple TV users as well.

In today’s iOS 6.1 update, the company introduced some improvements to Siri, including the ability to purchase movie tickets through Siri. Apple also introduced redesigned music control buttons, as well as new MapKit framework enhancements. And don’t forget about added LTE support for more carriers on the iPhone 5.

Japan to launch 4K TV broadcasts in July 2014

During CES week, European television network Eutelsat launched the first-ever 4K TV channel, and while it’s only for experimental and demonstration purposes, it’ll set the tone for the future of television broadcasting. Case in point: Japan is planning on launching 4K TV broadcasts in July 2014, which is two years ahead of schedule.

According to a report from the Asahi Shimbun, the 4K transmissions will first begin using communication satellite channels before moving to broadcast satellites, with digital broadcasting arriving at a later date. Not a lot of details are available at this point, but it should only be a matter of time before we hear more about 4K TV broadcasting.

However, the report notes that the 4K broadcast is set to be up and running by the time the final match of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil kicks off, which will no doubt excite avid soccer fans in Japan. Plus, since 4K broadcasts are two years ahead of schedule, they’re also moving up 8K broadcasts as well, which should be launching in 2016.

The biggest story of CES 2013 was the rise of 4K televisions. It’s certainly not the first time we’ve heard about them this year, but companies like Sony, Panasonic, Sharp, and LG are just now putting their respective models up for sale, but of course, it’ll cost you a pretty penny to afford one of these new panels.

The SocialTV Timeline launch follows the announcement of ConnecTV’s AdSync Network, which enables “view-sers” to act immediately on relevant television ads and promotions by tapping on synchronized companion ads on their second screen devices: Buy now, get a special promotional offer, watch additional product videos, find the closest store or enter a contest. SocialTV Timeline and the TV AdSync Network comprise the core of ConnecTV’s new social television platform that syncs with every show across more than 400 national channels, local stations and regional sports networks.

The new suite of ConnecTV features launches with an innovative graphical design that showcases the conversation around your favorite shows as well as a one-touch social integration that instantly connects viewers with their friends and followers throughout the social sphere. The design mission: To make TV more engaging, more compelling and more fun.

Consistent with the new design’s focus on driving the conversation around television, ConnecTV showcases its “Watercooler” initiative launched over the summer. Watercooler features national and local celebrities in sports, news, and entertainment chatting about the day’s top news on TV. The Watercooler premiered on ConnecTV around the 2012 London Games with Olympic Gold Medalists Bruce Jenner, Greg Louganis, Aaron Peirsol, Amanda Beard, and Clyde Drexler, and has continued through the new year with pop culture icon Michael Buckley sparking social media conversation around tent-pole programming such as the Golden Globes, “Dancing with the Stars” and “Vampire Diaries.”

ConnecTV’s new mobile interface is designed as a stream of dynamic cells, which, when touched, instantly expand to provide users with more in-depth information and real-time interactive functionality, including purchasing capabilities, in-depth and play-by-play sports statistics, relevant user polls, and connected social media – as well as enabling chat that is synchronized with the show you are watching.

The free ConnecTV app offers companion programming content and social interactivity elements that sync with any program from any TV source: cable, satellite and IPTV – live or time-shifted. ConnecTV uses a proprietary combination of content-recognition algorithms, closed caption data and a diverse mix of content meta-data to drive the accuracy, relevancy and speed of synchronization with broadcast programming – along with a tight technical integration into leading social media networks including Facebook and Twitter.

ConnecTV’s new platform syndication opportunity for SocialTV Timeline and the AdSync Network launches with the top broadcast media companies’ television stations across America: Belo Corp., Cox Media Group, E.W. Scripps Co., Gannett Broadcasting, Hearst Television Inc., Media General Inc., Meredith Corp., Post-Newsweek Stations, Raycom Media and Schurz Communications.

AT&T U-Verse issues being resolved today

In case you missed the news, some U-Verse customers in a number of different areas around the country have been experiencing service outages since the beginning of the week. When we first told you about the problems, AT&T was being vague on what was causing them and when service would return. Today is a different story, as AT&T is saying that service is returning for many affected customers.

attlogo-580x348

If you still don’t have service, sit tight, because the company claims that service should return for everyone at some point today. Even better is the fact that AT&T will credit those who were affected by the outage, so your next bill might be a little lower than it usually is. Paying less is always a good thing, even if you did have to deal with a service outage for the better part of a week.

Speaking to The New York Times, AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel spoke of the outage. “U-verse service has been restored for the vast majority of our customers affected by the outage,” Siegel said. “We expect any remaining customer issues will be resolved this morning.” Apparently, the outages were caused by a botched software update, so it seems that AT&T has fixed the issue and is definitely ready to move on from this sticky situation.

The outages affected many consumers in a number of different states, seemingly stretching across the south of the US. We’re glad to hear that AT&T is bringing U-Verse back for most today, but we imagine that the company has quite a few angry customers to deal with now. Were you one of the many who were affected by this service outage?

CBS says Dish Network pulled a fast one, hid Auto Hop during negotiations

Dish Network‘s Auto Hop feature has been the target of more than a few legal proceedings, with networks crying foul over its commercial-deleting abilities. Now, admist the controversy already surrounding the device, is a claim by CBS that Dish Network intentionally concealed Auto Hop during negotiations, something it is none to happy about. According to the network, not providing the information completely altered the resulting deal.

autohop

As a result of the alleged impropriety on Dish’s part, CBS is trying to get permission to file counterclaims of fraud in regards to the Auto Hop omission. In recompense, CBS wants to either have Dish pay up damages that resulted from the revenue loss resulting from the deal, or to have the deal between them nixed.

According to CBS, advertisement revenue was specifically one of the perks it would receive under a retransmission agreement between the two companies. This all resulted when it was revealed that Dish had planned to roll out its device with Auto Hop when it was in negotiations with CBS, making the lack of communication on its part a deliberate concealment.

This comes after a ruling back on November 7 that Dish’s Primetime and Auto Hop wouldn’t be blocked, something Fox was actively pursuing. Earlier in the year, NBC’s chairman was vocal in his opposition to the feature, calling it an attack on the television ecosystem. The company would then go on to sue Dish, along with Fox and NBC, over the feature.

AT&T U-Verse outages hitting some US consumers

If you’re an AT&T U-Verse customer, then there’s a chance that you’ve been experiencing some problems with your service lately. AT&T U-Verse service has been suffering from outages in some areas of the US, with little in the way of an explanation from the company. All we know is that AT&T is working to bring U-Verse service, which includes TV, Internet, and phone, back to these affected areas.

attlogo

DSLReports says that its users in several states including Florida, Tennessee, Texas, Louisiana, Kentucky, Georgia, and Arkansas are reporting outages, with AT&T confirming the outages in Florida to The Miami Herald. In its confirmation, it didn’t say why the outages were happening, only saying that it has a “team of engineers and technicians” working on coming up with a fix.

Some of these folks have been experiencing service interruptions since Monday morning, so the fact that they haven’t been fixed yet may suggest a big problem for AT&T. Indeed, it sounds like the company isn’t going to divulge the cause of the problems, as similar statements are lacking any significant details. Perhaps AT&T doesn’t yet know what’s causing the problem? It seems unlikely, but with the company remaining tight-lipped about the issues its having, we suppose it’s possible.

The good news is that a few U-Verse subscribers are reporting restored service, but for the most part, it seems that outages are still plaguing customers. With AT&T’s vague statements, it’s impossible to know how much longer these outages will last, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed and hope that they don’t go on much longer. Keep it here at SlashGear, as we’ll let you know if AT&T makes any new announcements on the outages.

Bill Gates to chat education on PBS in first TED Talk made for TV

Word comes by way of The Wrap that PBS is slated to air the very first TED Talk produced for TV on April 16th, and it’ll feature Bill Gates, to boot. The special sets its sights on discussing education and will include the likes of educators Geoffrey Canada and Sir Ken Robinson alongside Microsoft’s co-founder. In advance of the broadcast, the program will be taped at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Harvey Theater on April 4th. There’s no word on whether tickets are up for grabs to attend the event, but we’d start searching for friends who know Gates if you’d prefer the live experience.

If You Don’t Think 4K TV Is Freaking Awesome, There’s Something Wrong With You

CES is mostly useless, sure, and most of the trillion dinky things trotted out like chrome and plastic show chihuahuas will wind up in landfills. But CES is worth it just to give 4K, Ultra HD TV its big debut. And if you’re not amazed by it, I’m afraid you’re an idiot. More »

aTV Flash 21 black offers very specific favorites, TV shows in playlists

It’s not hard to find a media app with some type of favorites system. It’s tougher to find one that lets us be very specific on just what a favorite can be. The new aTV Flash (black) 2.1 update, however, will let Apple TV modders be as exacting as they’d like: they can favorite individual videos, whole seasons and even broader search terms. Catch-up viewers get their own treat in the form of TV show playlists that simplify watching episodes back-to-back. A slew of further tweaks are inside, including iOS 6 support, so there’s every incentive to upgrade for those who rely on not-quite-official firmware for Apple’s living room hub.

Netflix makes content-licensing deal with Turner and Warner Bros.

Netflix customers in the US will soon get a host of new shows coming their way, thanks to a content-licensing agreement between Netflix and two content providers, Turner Broadcasting and Warner Bros. Television Group. The deal means that tons of new shows from Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, TNT, and more, will be making their way to the streaming service as soon as late March.

netflix-580x32611

Netflix’s exclusive Arrested Development production won’t air until later this May, so while eager fans are waiting for the show’s return, they’ll be able to catch up on shows like Adventure Time, Ben 10, the Green Lantern animated series, Robot Chicken, Johnny Bravo, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and TNT’s Dallas, which will join Netflix in January 2014, while the rest will come on March 30.

This licensing agreement comes just one week after Netflix announced an earlier deal, which focused primarily on live-action shows, and it appears that Netflix and Warner Bros. are becoming increasingly friendly with one another, which is both good for the two companies involved, as well as the consumers.

With the ever-increasing back catalog of TV shows, Netflix is becoming a dominant figure in the streaming media realm, hosting not only TV shows, but a respectable collection of movies as well. And every time the service makes another deal with a content provider, it becomes more and more tempting to cut the cable cord.
