Will.i.am and Simon Cowell Are Bringing You an X Factor for Tech Whether You Want It or Not [Television]
Posted in: Today's Chili If you thought judge-critiqued and/or audience-voting-based reality TV shows were getting old, you’d be right, but that doesn’t mean they’re going away. X Factor’s Simon Cowell and the Black Eyed Peas’ Will.i.am are reported to be whipping up a new one right now, but it’s not for singing, or any kind of performance art. No, no, no. It’s for tech moguls. More »
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has begun — what looks to be — a long process of reclaiming broadcast television spectrum. The process will essentially involve paying television broadcasters to give up some of their public airwaves voluntarily. They will then be auctioned off to wireless carriers to use for internet service.
The FCC has set a goal of having all of this completed by June 2014. Then again, FCC officials said the auctions themselves were unlikely to take place before the 2014 deadline. The FCC and Congress have estimated that the auctions could generate around $15 billion. A portion of that would go to television broadcasters who gave up public airwaves, while $7 billion of the earnings would be used to build a nationwide emergency network for public safety officials.
The entire process will have three components. The first thing would be the reverse auction, where television broadcasters will voluntarily sell their spectrum back to the government. After that, there will be a “repacking” of broadcasters who didn’t participate in the auction. This is to make sure the spectrum is being used efficiently and there are big enough sections of spectrum to sell to wireless carriers. The final step will be a forward auction, in which the wireless providers would bid on available spectrum.
FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said that this will be the first-ever incentive spectrum auction. He also mentioned, that when it was originally proposed in 2009, no one thought it could work. However, the proposal passed today and Genachowski believes it offers broadcasters and wireless providers a great opportunity. Verizon has even said that it’s happy that the FCC is doing this.
However, not everything is set in stone yet. The next step in the process is that many of these items will be opened to the public for comment. Once the period for public comment passes, the FCC will evaluate the information and create another, yet formal proposal that will be voted on by the FCC.

There are tons of YouTube channels that crank out awesome videos every week (The Slingshot Channel being one of my favorites), and we wish that some of them would become full-fledged TV shows. It looks like that’s about to become a reality for one YouTube channel in particular. Everyday Health will receive its own TV show starting in October.
The Everyday Health YouTube channel is taking one of their most popular video series and turning it into a broadcast TV show. It’s called Recipe Rehab and it will begin airing on ABC networks starting in October. The show will be fully funded by YouTube, and it will mark the first time a show that’s part of YouTube’s original channel program to be picked up by a television network.
Everyday Health gets over 30 million visitors per month. This includes their website, as well as their YouTube channel. The company hopes that its television presence will bring even more visitors to its YouTube channel, and it also hopes that its current visitors to their YouTube channel will tune into ABC come October to watch the new show.
A few details are still unknown. The show plans to air on Saturday mornings, but we don’t know what time exactly, nor do we know what exact ABC channels the show will broadcast on. Either way, if you’ve been a big fan of Everyday Health or if you’re simply looking forward to a new food-related TV show, you may want to give Recipe Rehab a try.

iOS 5.1 for Apple TV Enhances AirPlay Capabilities and Suggests Apps Might Arrive Soon [Apple]
Posted in: Today's Chili The Apple TV software has been updated in a very quiet manner, but the new functionality contained in that update—AirPlay broadcasting, support multiple iTunes account, shared photo streams—is more substantial than it first seems. And the fact that you can now rearrange icons on the home screen suggest that proper support for iOS apps could finally be on the way. More »
NFL Network and RedZone Channel coming to Time Warner Cable (Update: Officially confirmed)
Posted in: Today's ChiliYou don’t have to look high (or low) to find a litany of complaints regarding Time Warner Cable‘s service, support or pricing, but it’s evidently aiming to right one particular wrong later today. According to Bloomberg, the National Football League has inked a deal with TWC to bring the NFL Network and RedZone Channel to its systems. The move comes just months after the NFL ushered its networks onto rival Cablevision, putting TWC is a particular bind in the greater NYC market. It’s still unclear where the channels will be positioned and how much extra you’ll have to pony up to get ’em, but hey — it’s cheaper than moving to a FiOS neighborhood. (Though, admittedly, less satisfying.)
Update: Both parties have confirmed it, NFL Network and NFL RedZone Channel are coming to Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks starting September 23rd. NFL Network will be included for customers on the Digital Basic and Sports Pass tiers, while NFL RedZone is on the Sports Pass package only, check the press release after the break for the relevant details and self-congratulatory affirmations.

Shazam now rides shotgun with any TV show in the US, gets cozier with Facebook
Posted in: Today's ChiliShazam doesn’t want to let GetGlue control all our couch potato time — it just rolled out an upgrade to its TV component that lets the mobile app provide social sharing, soundtrack and trivia details for nearly any TV show in the US, not just those deemed worthy of special attention. The app mirrors the program it’s looking at — we’ll see stats instead of IMDb if we’re watching hockey, for example. Whether or not attention is locked on the bigger screen in the living room, Shazam’s little screen is making Facebook more a centerpiece of the experience. Media mavens can comment on friends’ tagging habits and post their own tags to their Facebook timelines for all to see. The wider universe of TV shows should be available today, although we’ll have to wait for an update in the “coming weeks” to broadcast our tastes in media with the rest of the world.

XPAND YOUniversal 3D Glasses Review: Compatibility Comes at a Price [Lightning Review]
Posted in: Today's Chili Today’s 3D TVs use any one of three active shutter technologies—IR, RF, or Bluetooth. If you own more than one 3D set—or you’re always short a pair of glasses at a friend’s house—you’d appreciate a pair that can synchronize with multiple systems. That’s better than keeping track of several pairs of backup glasses. Isn’t it? More »
Sharp further cuts bonuses and salaries to stay above water, save $180 million
Posted in: Today's Chili Sharp is already in full-on belt-tightening mode, and it’s not just cutting jobs to keep its staffing costs in line with shrinking finances. The sinking tech giant is doubling the size of executives’ salary cuts to 10 percent for a year-long period, all the while slashing planned 2013 bonuses to half of what they were in June. Sadly, everyday workers will have to take some of the same medicine. They’re facing similar bonus cuts and will have to take a 7 percent drop in salary for the same year. Between these steps and cuts to extras like travel allowances, Sharp hopes to save ¥14 billion in the current fiscal year, or about $180 million — a small amount next to the $2 billion in credit the company just recently obtained, but also a sign of just how much penny-pinching is involved in keeping the corporate ship afloat. Let’s hope the sacrifice pays off.
