Tesla-inspired Nerf gun

My first experience with how a Tesla coil works was not entirely scientific, as it was set in the battlefields of Command & Conquer, the unbelievable world where tanks are stopped by the presence of sandbags. Well, hacker Rob Flickenger sure has a better way of implementing the wonders of Tesla in the form of a Tesla coil gun which uses the Nerf gun as its starting point. Obviously, the end result is not something to be sneered at, but rather sinister looking to boot.

The Nerf gun’s plastic could not stand up to handle all the electrical power, and Flickenger had to recreate an exact replica with the use of aluminum and ABS plumbing pipe. Power will be derived from a 18-volt battery from his electric drill, while coils were hand-wound. Of course, with the amount of custom work being done here, it ended up being pretty expensive at $800 thereabouts, but this is truly a one-of-a-kind “weapon” to tote around. What would you give for this to be mass produced?

Elon Musk says Tesla will be ‘cash flow positive’ soon, announces early repayment of DOE loan

DNP Elon Musk

After Tesla Motors’ recent SEC filing painted a picture of production delays, revenue shortfalls and stock sales to raise cash, CEO Elon Musk has gone on the record to say everything’s a-okay. The omnipresent executive said that “if the calendar were simply shifted a few weeks to the right” Tesla would have actually exceeded its vehicle delivery targets for the quarter, and said that the share release was merely held to mitigate risk from suppliers. He also claimed that the Department of Energy’s request for early repayment was not a poor reflection of the EV maker’s financial state, but actually a hearty endorsement — the government branch expects Tesla to make loads of cash, and wants it to repay the loan early rather than hoarding it. As such, Musk announced the Model S builder had initiated its first early payment today and would pay off the principal loan prior to its March 2013 due date. We’ll have to see if that’s enough to keep the automaker’s name out of any future presidential debates.

Tesla’s Supercharger not compatible with competitor’s EVs, keeps electricity within the family

Tesla Supercharger not compatible with competitor's EVs, keeps electricity within the family

Planning on juicing up your Chevy Volt, Mitsubishi i-MiEV or Nissan Leaf with Tesla’s Supercharger? Hold your horses, vaquero. The nighttime unveiling stressed that the quick-charge solution was Model S-friendly, but we should also note that it’s only compatible with the firm’s automobile. Vehicles from other automakers won’t be able to jack into the station thanks to a 20-kilowatt hour converter, which would zap other batteries with too much electricity, and a proprietary plug. Unless something changes, those planning cross-country trips using EVs from other manufacturers will just have to find an alternative to Musk and Co.’s white obelisk.

Tesla behind on Model S production goals, aims for extra cash with stock sale

Tesla behind on Model S production goals, aims for extra cash with stock sale

Sure, topping off a Model S in 30 minutes with a Supercharger is awfully handy, but production delays of the sedan will keep some future owners away from quick charge times — and most importantly — their cars for a little while longer. In a freshly published filing with the US Securities Exchange and Commission, Tesla revealed that it hasn’t reached its goal of producing 400 Model S vehicles a week, which places them four to five weeks behind their 2012 delivery expectations. To date, just 255 of the autos have rolled off the assembly line, 132 of which have made their way to new homes. According to the Palo Alto-based outfit, ramping up production has been slower than expected for a number of reasons, including supplier delays and taking a deliberately measured pace for quality assurance purposes.

Before the year draws to a close, Musk and Co. anticipate meeting their goal of churning out 400 cars each week, and a total of 20,000 by the end of 2013. Currently, the automaker has racked up around 13,000 reservations and thinks it’ll be working to fulfill even more throughout 2013. As a result of the manufacturing lag, the firm has slashed its revenue forecast by as much as $200 million, estimating it’ll rake in anywhere from $400 million to $440 million this year. In an effort to add cash to its coffers, the company is putting up roughly 5 million shares of stock for sale. Who’s buying, you say? Tesla mentioned its CEO Elon Musk is interested in putting down a cool million bucks.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: September 25, 2012

We’ve had a rather interesting Tuesday here at SlashGear, thanks in no small part to RIM. The company held its BlackBerry Jam today, introducing us to new BlackBerry 10 features like Peek and Flow. We also learned that BlackBerry 10 will come with support for your favorite social networks, even offering a native Facebook app. Carrier testing on the new mobile OS will begin next month, and RIM CEO Thorsten Heins said that BlackBerry has a good shot at becoming number three behind Android and iOS.

We found out today that Apple’s new Lightning adapters come with an authentication chip built in, and that New York City is experiencing a sharp increase in the number of Apple thefts. Apple’s Phil Schiller said that the scuffs and scratches some users are experiencing with their iPhone 5s are normal, and a teardown of the iPhone 5′s A6 processor provided some fresh insight into what’s going on under the hood. There’s a new way for you to bypass the 3-4 week wait for an iPhone 5 to be delivered to your home, and Instagram was updated with support for iOS 6 while Google delivered its own iOS update for Google Voice.

The Samsung Galaxy Note II will be launching in the UK on October 1, and speaking of Samsung, we heard whispers that the company is planning to launch a Tizen-based Galaxy smartphone. New reports are saying that the Kindle Fire HD is in for some serious competition from the Google Nexus 7, and Microsoft’s Kinect could potentially help save lives in a new map making gadget. Intel’s CEO claims that Windows 8 is being released with a number of bugs left unfixed, and Tesla has slashed its profit forecast after its new Model S hit some bumps in production.

Google Maps apparently won’t be coming to iOS 6 until Apple offers an invitation, and the Jaguar F-TYPE suffered a very sexy leak today. Box has issued an update for its iOS app and it’s offering some free stuff to all iOS users, while some labor experts are warning that there could be more Foxconn riots in the future. Sony announced today that a number of October retail releases will be on PSN from launch day, and is even offering PS Plus subscribers a 10% discount on the purchase price of most of them. Finally tonight, Gameloft has released a new trailer for Modern Combat 4, and we have to say that we were pretty impressed.

That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up! Enjoy the rest of your night everyone!

Tesla slashes forecast over Model S production hiccups

Tesla has admitted it has fallen short of production goals for the Model S, blaming new equipment and supplier delays for pumping out fewer than expected electric sedans. The company – which announced ambitious solar-powered charging station plans this week – says it has so far produced 255 of the Model S, of which 132 have been delivered to buyers, and leaving Tesla 4-5 weeks behind schedule. At fault, Tesla says in a shareholder filing [pdf link], is the complexity of the new equipment involved on the Model S production line.

“The Model S is an all new vehicle which we are producing with new employees using new equipment. As our main focus is on quality, we have methodically increased our Model S production at a rate slower than we had earlier anticipated” Tesla says. “To produce a vehicle that meets our quality standards requires us to carefully analyze each step of our production ramp, improve the efficiency of our manufacturing processes and continue to train our employees.”

Responsibility isn’t solely Tesla’s, however. The company is also holding its suppliers to high standards, and that has caused some hiccups with components, it claims. “Certain suppliers have experienced delays in meeting our demand” Tesla says, “and we continue to focus on supplier capabilities and constraints.”

Model S shipments to customers had previously been estimated to reach 5,000 cars by the end of 2012, with Tesla setting a production goal of 20,000 for 2013. While the company still believes that 2013 target is workable, it now suggests it will deliver at most 3,225 cars before the year is through.

Overall, though, Tesla has cut its financial outlook, from the previous $560m-600m to $400m-$440m. R&D spending is expected to diminish by 20-percent in Q3 versus Q2, and Tesla saw a significant number of cancelations from those on its reservations list. That’s predicted to become less of an issue as the delay between placing an order and receiving a car decreases in line with production climbing, however.

Tesla plans to build solar chargers along major US highways for its vehicle owners

Tesla Motors has some of the coolest electric vehicles on the market today including the Roadster and the new Model S. Despite how cool these electric vehicles are people may still have the same range anxiety with these cars as they would any other electric vehicle, such as the Nissan Leaf or others. Tesla has a plan to address this range anxiety, and the plan has nothing to do with bigger batteries.

Tesla has announced that it plans to build a network of solar-powered chargers along major US highways to expand the driving range of Tesla vehicles. The chargers would be offered to Tesla owners at no charge. The company has already installed the first six of the high-speed chargers along highways in California, Nevada, and Arizona.

The high-powered solar chargers are able to recharge a Model S sedan at a rate of 100 kW. The high power of the souped-up chargers allows the vehicle to travel for three additional hours of highway driving with 30 minutes of charging. Each of the Chargers cost Tesla $250,000.

The charger can charge 4 to 6 Tesla electric vehicles at one time. Tesla’s overall plan is to install 100 of the new solar chargers over the next three to four years at a total cost of $20 million-$30 million. Tesla also plans to begin opening the so-called “superchargers” in Europe and Asia in the second half 2013.

Tesla solar-powered car charging stations for Model S owners unveiled, will be free to use

Electric car manufacturer Tesla has constructed solar-powered rapid electric car chargers at half a dozen spots throughout the great state of California as an initial rollout, and they have drawn up plans to install even more solar-powered rapid electric car chargers from 2013 onwards. The technology relies on a solar system from SolarCity, and even better news for Tesla’s Model S owners – using those will be free. Calling it the “Supercharger” rapid car charging network, Tesla claims that these stations will offer free charging “indefinitely” for Model S owners, and they are “clean” stations considering how the Superchargers will be powered exclusively by our great ball of fire, the sun.

The Supercharger could be deemed to be the answer to a trio of major problems that prevent electric vehicles from being mainstream, including the ability to drive electric vehicles across long distances in a convenient manner, solve the problem of generating electricity at a distant fossil fuel power plant, as well as tackling the wallet-numbing cost of electricity eventually. Tesla has a global outlook, and wants to install many more Supercharger stations throughout Europe and Asia in addition to the US.

Tesla reveals Supercharger network it says will cover the US in two years; Model S fills up for free, always

At Tesla’s event, CEO Elon Musk has finally taken the wraps off of its Superchargers which it has already set up at six locations in California, pictured in the map after the break. The company plans installations on “high traffic corridors across the US” over the next year, with units heading to Europe and Asia in the second half of 2013. According to Musk, the solar powered systems will put more power back into the grid than the cars use while driving. Oh, and for you Model S owners? You will always be able to charge at any of the stations for free. According to Musk, the economies of scale developed while building the Model S have helped it get costs down on the chargers, although he did not offer specifics.

During the event we also saw video of drivers charging their vehicles at stations today that Tesla apparently constructed in secret. They’re using solar technology from (also owned by Musk) SolarCity, and can charge a Model S with 100 kilowatts good for three hours of driving at 60mph in about 30 minutes. Currently pushing 90kW, they could go as high as 120 in the future for even faster charging. Check the press release embedded after the break or Tesla’s website for more details.

Update: The video replay of the event itself is live, and embedded after the break.
