Lonely Mountain Cola: If The Hobbits Made Their Own Soda…

If hobbits had their own brand of soda, it would be best to call it Lonely Mountain Cola. For those of you unfamiliar with the story, that’s a reference to the mountain which holds the hobbits’ treasure that was stolen by the greedy and wicken dragon, Smaug.

I don’t know what Hobbit-made soda would taste like, though. All I know is that they’re smaller than your average soda cans and definitely better-looking in more ways than one.

These LOTR concept soda can designs were created by the people behind the Lonely Mountain Cola Co. Facebook page, which was created to “set up as a cross-realm/inter-dimensional/multiverse experience dedicated to supporting the Dwarves of Middle-earth in their quest of getting their home back.”

Eye of Sauron Lollipops: Lick into My Eye!

One does not simply walk into the candy store. Though if you did, I’d hope that you and your companions would grab a batch of these spectacular lollipops that look like the Eye of Sauron.

They’re made by Etsy artist Designer Lollipop, and they’re made from isomalt, sugar, corn syrup. I’ve been told the black sugar on back is made from the souls of the dead- though they actually taste like delicious cherry.

Unfortunately, these lollies are already sold, but I’m sure you could whip up a spell to convince the candy maker to crank out another batch.

How Weta Digital Studios Delivers Middle Earth to Your Multiplex

We’ve come a long way since the days of Cool World and Who Framed Roger Rabbit? I mean, just look at last December’s blockbuster, The Hobbit. Peter Jackson’s Weta Studios (the same group that created Looper’s skylines and District 9’s extra terrestrial tech) leverages cutting-edge CGI techniques to meld live action and digital animation so seamlessly you’d swear those giant eagles were real. What Did You Think of The Hobbit at 48 FPS?

So The Hobbit is out today, and if you’re a megafan, maybe you saw it at midnight, or maybe you’re seeing it tonight. Or maybe you took off today to see it nine times in a row and are about to collapse in a pool of human waste. If you saw it, or if you’re going to see it, you’ve probably heard about (or will notice) a big change in the way it was shot. Specifically, The Hobbit is shot at 48 frames per second, and everyone’s freaking out. More »

‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Parody’: Lord of the Drunks

Contrary to popular belief, Hillywood is not a group composed of hillbillies who have nothing better than to do than make parodies of Hollywood’s most popular films. They’re actually a group of fine, upstanding folks who have nothing better to do than make awesome parodies of Hollywood’s most popular films. See what I did there?

Hillywood ParodyThe Hobbit hits theaters in less than two weeks, so anticipation for the first movie in the trilogy is at an all-time high.

Before fans go rabid for having to wait so long, Hillywood kindly took it upon themselves to churn out this hilarious parody that has the multitude of dwarves in the movie partying and chugging down shots like there’s no tomorrow! The best part? Gandalf the Grey even joins in on the fun.

The most surprising part? There’s not a flagon of mead amongst them.

If Bilbo Baggins Used iOS 6 Maps

There’s more than a few unkind words to be said about Apple’s decision to boot out Google Maps and use their own, hobbled version instead. Didn’t someone just get fired over this? That being said, I wonder if Bilbo Baggins had used an iPhone 5 and iOS 6 Maps, would he have gotten completely lost? The guys over at Bullz-Eye wondered the same, and came up with this approximation of what his journey might have looked like.

bilbo hobbit baggins journey iphone 5

Just like many people, I’m pretty sure that he might have gotten lost using iOS 6 Maps, going many days out of the way on his trek to Lonely Mountain. Unfortunately, Google Maps hasn’t yet released their anticipated iOS app yet, so unless Bilbo has an Android phone, he’s out of luck for now.

It does make you think about when was the last time you pulled out a paper map. Smartphone and car GPS maps are way more convenient to use, and even if you get lost, you can find your way back pretty quickly. Unless it happens to be one of these places.

Miniature Bag End Terrarium: The Hobbits Downsize

Bilbo and Frodo are small enough as it is, but if they were even smaller they could live in this 10-inch-tall terrarium version of Bag End by FaceoftheEarth. This highly detailed, hand-sculpted house was made from reference shots from the movies. Adding even more realism is a living ecosystem of moss harvested from forests by its creator.

If you care for it properly, you can keep your terrarium healthy and green and thriving for a long time. This is a good thing, because this miniature hovel will cost you $375(USD). Luckily the seller provides some care instructions with your purchase.

You could probably find or make some tiny hobbit figures to finish things off.

Bag End Made from Balloons

Just the other day we told you about the homemade Hobbit Doll House that one Tolkien fan made, now we have Bag End made from balloons. Geeks are going Hobbit crazy.
bag end balloons
Jeremy Telford, of The Balloon Guys, spent 40 hours on this version of Bilbo Baggins’ home. He didn’t use a doll house. He used his living room and turned it into a nice hobbit home, using 2,600 balloons. Check out the time-lapse video below.

I’m assuming that he doesn’t have any cats and that he forbids any sharp objects from entering his home. He did a nice job, but I’m sure the room shrinks a bit each day as those balloons lose air.

The Hobbit Will Play in High Frame Rate at 450 Theaters Across North America

Peter Jackson’s version of The Hobbit has been causing a stir, because people expect its high frame rate—48 frames per second, no less—will make it look a bit like a 70s soap opera. At least you’ll be able to tell for yourself, because 450 theaters across North America are equipped to show the film at its high frame rate. More »

The Hobbit Comes With an FAQ Explaining Why It’ll Look So Weird

Not every theater will be showing Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit in its native 48 frames-per-second. But for those that will, Warner Bros. has created this handy FAQ that explains why the HFR 3D (high frame rate) technology could make the film look like a TV soap opera. More »
