Interactive LED Cube: Rubik’s Cube 2.0

Thanks to touchscreens and other input sensors, we’re finding more ways to integrate physical movement in electronic entertainment. The Princip Interactive LED Futuro Cube is another example. Its sensors work with the embedded LEDs to amuse – or frustrate – you in all sorts of ways.

The Future Cube has multi-axis accelerometers, 56 LEDs and a speaker. The accelerometers enable it to detect gravity, motion and tapping, the LEDs are there to, well, light up, and the cube provides feedback, tutorials and score through the speaker. The cube has 12 game modes, including Gravity Puzzle (similar to Rubik’s Cube but with tapping instead of rotating!), Snake (it slithers through all six sides!) and Cubris (Tetris, except it’s way more confusing!)

Here’s a quick demo of Gravity Puzzle:

Did you understand what was happening in that last video? Neither did I. All the more reason to get one of these toys. You can order the Princip Interactive LED Futuro Cube from ThinkGeek for $100 (USD).

Half-Life 2 Zero Point Energy Field Manipulator Replica

Are you an avid fan of the Half Life 2 series? I am quite sure that when you first laid your eyes on the Half-Life 2 Zero Point Energy Field Manipulator (aka gravity gun), you were blown away completely by the kind of things it could do in-game. Of course, this led to the gravity gun proving itself crucial in solving some of the game’s puzzles, and was also quite fun to use just to amuse yourself in-game. Here is something you can hold in the flesh and bring home – the $149.99 Half-Life 2 Zero Point Energy Field Manipulator Replica, which is a limited edition gravity gun that comes in a 1:1 replica form factor, complete with LEDs, handles, triggers, and unique sounds.

There is also a fold-away kickstand for display purposes, letting you proudly show it off to all and sundry who drop by your house and are worth their gaming salt. This Gravity Gun (let’s just call it this for now, as it is easier to roll off the tongue) is made out of molded plastic, and will boast of orange LEDs, a couple of handles and an equal number of triggers, and a quartet of sounds from the game. You might want to place an order as soon as possible, since once they are sold out, they are more or less gone forever!

Princip Interactive LED Futuro Cube

Do you love puzzle games? If you have answered in the affirmative and want to keep up with the times, then you might want to gravitate towards the $99.99 Princip Interactive LED Futuro Cube. Sounds and looks as though it is something that hails from Hellraiser, no? Actually, the Princip Interactive LED Futuro Cube is, as its name suggests, a cube-based gaming platform that boggles the mind, or at least it does its best in doing so. We are looking at plenty of tech being packed into a diminutive package, which is no surprise in this day and age. In fact, it is said that all the puzzle games you would want to have are within, and good news for developers – a developer’s kit is arriving early this year.

Just to get a clearer picture on what the Princip Interactive LED Futuro Cube offers, it boasts of a clever combination of multi-axis accelerometers, haptic vibration feedback, wireless connectivity, 4-channel audio and 56 multi-color LEDs, all rolled into a handheld cube so that it will be able to deliver a unique gaming experience that is unlike any other on the market. The Futuro Cube is capable of sensing rotation, where tapping it on any side will provide feedback in the form of vibration, audio playback and the dynamic change of it’s LED colors. Assuming you want more of a challenge, then purchase two of these puppies, and they will interact together. Time to crack your brain for the year ahead, no?

iDroid Bluetooth Gaming Controller

The smartphone has ended up to be a pretty decent mobile gaming device in recent times, and it does not seem to show any sign of slowing down at all. In fact, it looks as though it is growing from strength to strength, and dedicated handheld consoles such as the PS Vita and Nintendo 3DS need to look behind their shoulders! Well, for those who love gaming in short bursts on their smartphones but have not really gotten used to full touchscreen controls even until now, here is a solution for you – one that needs no app at all. We’re talking about the $39.99 iDroid Bluetooth Gaming Controller, of course.

The iDroid Bluetooth Gaming Controller is a wireless Bluetooth controller for both Android and iOS powered devices, where all you need to do is just pair and play. This is definitely a controller that will resonate with long time console gamers, where it comes complete with analog thumbsticks, a digital gamepad, half a dozen digital buttons and a couple of analog L and R triggers. It will even support controller function, mouse, keyboard, mouse/keyboard, and can also play nice with iCade apps. The built-in li-Ion rechargeable battery can be juiced straight from the attached USB cord.

Princip Interactive LED Futuro Cube hands-on

Princip Interactive LED Futuro Cube handson

Playing around with ThinkGeek’s table full of toys was unquestionably a highlight of 2013 CES experience, which is (thankfully) nearly at an end. In amongst the always awesome licensed Star Trek and Star Wars toys was the Princip Interactive LED Futuro Cube, a strange game device created with ThinkGeek. The device brings to mind the Rubik’s Cube, if only because its a geometrical puzzle game. In place of colored squares are a series of different colored LED lights.

Like Rubik’s famous three-dimensional toy, the Futuro isn’t particularly easy to master. It has a menu system and offers up a series of audible commands to access its different games. Getting started takes a quick shake and it can be put to sleep with couple of taps. There’s also a USB port on one side for downloading software updates, including new games.

HAL 9000 Life-Size Replica

Fans in the realm of science fiction, we play harbingers of good news today – delivering word that you can now bring the terror of early computing right to the comforts of your own home. Who knows, one of the $499.99 HAL 9000 Life-Size Replica could actually malfunction and be the malevolent ghost in the shell that scared the heck out of many all those years ago when they watched Space Odyssey? Touted to be the most accurate HAL 9000 replica ever created, it was constructed from the 1967 blueprints and image files.

The HAL 9000 Life-Size Replica might not usher the end of humanity, but what it does would no less send chills down the spines of those in the know. It can speak 15 different phrases, and respond to voice and most IR remotes, now how about that? The red LED eye will definitely be part of its physical make up, and it comes with a 2-minute auto-shutoff feature to save battery life.

HAL 9000 Life-Size Replica: Buy at Your Own Risk

Few villains enjoy a level of popularity as HAL 9000, which is why it’s not surprising that ThinkGeek’s newly released life-size replica of the computer from 2001: A Space Odyssey is already sold out despite its significant asking price.

The replica is based on “actual movie blueprints” and “original studio files.” I bet there were “geniune film documents” and “authentic cinema records” involved as well. The replica is made from aircraft-grade aluminum and of course has a red LED eye. It also speaks, cycling through 15 phrases taken from the movie. You can trigger its voice using the included remote control, but it can also be triggered by talking to it. The latter is way cooler, but don’t expect it to call you by any other name but Dave.

ThinkGeek is selling the replica for $500 (USD) each. I know you’re already throwing money at the screen and are raring to order the replica but as I said, it’s already sold out. ThinkGeek did say that it will be back in stock by January 15 so hold on to your money until then.

ThinkGeek offers lifesize, $500 HAL 9000 replica, makes you answer to 'Dave'

It was a little over a year ago that ThinkGeek gave folks a chance to add a bit of 2001 to their home with the IRIS 9000 iPhone dock, but it’s really gone the extra mile this year. The retailer has today announced its new HAL 9000 Life-Size Replica, a $500 device that’s said to be built using the original 1967 blueprints and image files. What’s more, while it isn’t exactly “fully functional,” it is able to respond to voice commands and most IR remotes with a variety of suitably unsettling phrases (yes, including a rendition of “Daisy Bell”). The downside is that it will set you back considerably more than the $60 of its smaller counterpart — ThinkGeek is asking a full $500 for this conversation starter, each of which is “hand-assembled to make sure they are perfect.” Would-be purchasers can get a taste of what’s in store in the video after the break.

Doctor Who Tardis Play Tent

You know what they say as a man grows up – he might not be playing with little green army men made out of plastic any more, but would have moved on to big boys’ toys. Some of these could be rather expensive, while others are affordable, such as the $89.99 Doctor Who Tardis Play Tent. You can be sure that the little ones in your home too, would not be able to resist playing with this, but you can kindly ask them to move out so that you can check out the 11th Doctor’s control room all by yourself. Not only that, since it is made out of sturdy canvas construction and stand at nearly 6 feet in height, there is plenty of space in there to hook up with other Doctor Who fans should you erect this at your backyard the next time you host a party in your home.

If you do not want to place the Doctor Who Play Tent outside of your four walls, place it right in your living room, it would not mind such a position, either. Entering it, you are able to use your imagination as to what goes on within the four canvas walls. Once done, just fold it back and it can be easily stashed away in the storeroom without taking up too much space. Of course, you might want to have some heart for the little ones and let them play in it from time to time, right?
