DIY Classic Desk Lamp

Working at the desk is the calling for many of us, although whether this ‘calling’ is intentional or otherwise, that I shall leave it to you to decide. Needless to say, any decent work desk will need an accompanying lamp, just in case you decide to burn the proverbial midnight oil. Who uses oil lamps anymore these days in a modern air conditioned office? This is where the $39.99 DIY Classic Desk Lamp comes in handy, where it allows you to have this sense of satisfaction by building your own lamp – although you would have enlisted a little bit of outside help in making sure all the parts are ready for the assembly process.

This mini wooden desk lamp will come with its own fair share of casters for you to put together yourself, and there is no need to cut anything or hammer a nail or two here and there, hence greatly reducing the chances of experiencing an accident that would require you to rush yourself to the nearest first aid counter. The DIY Classic Desk Lamp measures around 24 inches in height, and will be accompanied by a 3 foot long extension cord. Now, to make sure you have enough back up bulbs just in case Murphy decides to strike…

ThinkGeek IdeaFactory Will Pay You for Your Geeky Product Ideas

I’m sure I’m not alone in having a love for all the geeky and cool products that ThinkGeek offers. I’ve got more than a few them, with one of my favorite being that pizza cutter that looks like the Starship Enterprise. Now,  if you have an awesome idea for a geek themed product that would be perfect for ThinkGeek, you will want to pay attention. ThinkGeek has launched the IdeaFactory where you can submit your product ideas and actually make money.

thinkgeek ideafactory

The way the system works is you submit your idea using a written description and an image of some sort. The image can be a detailed drawing or a rendering. ThinkGeek has 60 days to evaluate the idea and get back to you.

The company can tell you your product is crap or love the idea and actually build it. If ThinkGeek chooses to build your product idea, you get $1000 and 10% of retail sales for the product. If the sales from your awesome geek idea hit the $1 million mark, your cut of the retail sale drops to 5%. Royalties are paid quarterly and you have to own the intellectual property rights for ideas you submit. Guess that eliminates my proposal for a bald Captain Jean-Luc Picard cookie jar that says “Shut up Wesley!” each time you open the lid.

ThinkGeek IdeaFactory can turn your geeky dreams into reality

If you have the world’s most awesome idea for a geeky product that would be perfect on ThinkGeek, the company’s new IdeaFactory will blow your mind. ThinkGeek has announced that it is launching a new program with the goal of allowing geeks to submit ideas for products with a chance of getting the product made and making some money. This may be the perfect chance for me to get my genius idea on the market- two words: bacon bra.

The way IdeaFactory works is that you submit your idea via a written description and an image. The image can be a rendering or a detailed engineering style drawing. ThinkGeek then reviews the ideas and ensures that it passes a few unknown caveats and will then respond to you within 60 days. If the product is deemed worthy, you make some money.

ThinkGeek will pay you in advance of $1000 if your idea is selected for production. That thousand dollars isn’t all you get, you also earn 10% of all retail sales the life of the product up to $1 million. If the product should reach that $1 million mark, the royalty rate drops to 5%. Royalties are paid out quarterly, and ThinkGeek will sell you all of the product that you want to buy for slightly more the cost plus shipping.

You can sell the product on your own website or at public appearances. Unlike some other sites on the web, there is no submission fee and no development costs. That means all you have to do is submit a decent idea to make some money.

Tiny Toaster USB Hub Is So Adorable You’ll Want To Vomit [Flash Drives]

There’s seemingly an infinite supply of novelty USB flash drives and hubs for consumers to waste their money on, but none come close to the gag-inducing adorableness of this tiny toaster hub and accompanying anthropomorphized slices of toast. More »

USB Toaster Hub and Thumbdrives

Some of us might say that a particular file is toast once we accidentally pressed Shift and Delete keys on the keyboard, but you might want to think of making a backup of all your important files onto a USB flash drive beforehand. Now, since many of us already tote a fair number of USB flash drives as part of our collection, why not make matters more interesting by using a USB hub at home or in the office? You might as well make a stylish statement in the process with the USB Toaster Hub and Thumbdrives from ThinkGeek. The USB Toaster Hub is one thing, and you can choose other thumb-drives that come in the shape of a toast. The toaster and toasts are sold separately, retailing anywhere from $24.99 to $27.99 depending on what you are looking for.

I guess it would be travesty not to collect all four “slices” of “toast”, especially when you consider how cute the whole setup would be if you were to piece them together. Not only that, ThinkGeek knows that the modern day road warrior is also one who carries a slew of other gizmos as well, which is where the SD memory card slot on this puppy comes in handy.

Doctor Who TARDIS Book Light

I was told by my parents never to read under poor lighting conditions, as it is absolutely dreadful on the eyes. I guess I am reaping the consequences of my action now, and have been wearing glasses for the better part of two decades already. If you are an avid reader and would like to do so before you sleep each night, but your partner in bed prefers to enter Dreamland, here is a compromise gizmo that the both of you can agree on – the $15.99 Doctor Who TARDIS Book Light which is definitely appealing to Dr. Who fans.

The Doctor Who TARDIS Book Light is a clip-on light that offers adequate amount of LCD light which is bright enough for you to read, and the light is also accompanied by a UV pen in order for you to write out secret notes whenever you are feeling a little bit secretive and have just watched Sherlock Holmes for the umpteenth time. The adjustable neck enables you to position the light wherever you need it, although just make sure there are always a couple of CR2 batteries lying around to keep it powered.

Battlestar Galactica Flash Drive

There are many USB flash drives around, where they all come in different shapes and sizes. Well, for the science fiction fan, here is something that you might want to check out – the $44.99 Battlestar Galactica Flash Drive. Sure, you can say that this a whole lot more expensive than it really is, considering it comes with only 4GB of storage space, and one good thing about this would be its compatibility – it can be used by both humans and Cylons alike, regardless of which side of the fence you lean on.

While the Battlestar Galactica Flash Drive will not be faster than light, but at least it is capable of holding your fair share of memory and files wherever you go, and at a glance, you are able to share your love for your favorite science fiction series with but a single purchase. Do you think it is actually worth more than the actual price, considering how it seems to have been jacked up just for the sake of taking advantage of Battlestar Galactica fans.

iCrayon Capacitive Touch Stylus

With so many of us using touchscreen devices these days, you could say that your fingers are the primary mode of interaction with such displays. This is very different from the first generation touchscreen display devices that came with a stylus, and if you feel more comfortable with a stylus gliding all over your device’s display instead of a greasy finger after having some pizza for lunch, then I would assume the cute looking $9.99 iCrayon Capacitive Touch Stylus would be able to get the job done, and get it done nicely as well. This is not something you might want to use in a corporate boardroom due to the lack of seriousness, but if you are a teacher who wants to “connect” with your junior school kids, then it would definitely be non-threatening and rank you “cool” among the students.

It basically looks and feels like a crayon, and it will play nice with iOS-powered devices, Android tablets and smartphones, and basically any other device that comes with a touchscreen display. Bear in mind that this is one crayon that will not leave smudges all over your wall if your toddler decides to get creative with it around the home when you are not around to supervise him or her.

Ivee Voice Activated Alarm Clock

I would presume that most of us rely on our smartphones as our alarm clocks, since we get to choose the kind of ringtone to wake up to. However, there are others who would like a dedicated alarm clock to get the job done, as it has always been that way, so it is nice to have it continue. Well, since we have moved on to voice commands in our smartphone operating systems like Samsung’s S Voice and Apple’s Siri, how about introducing voice commands to the humble alarm clock? This is what happened with the $59.99 Ivee Voice Activated Alarm Clock.

No longer do you need to smash your alarm clock to send it to snooze every morning when it rings, and you can always get out of bed on the right side by yelling directly at it. Unlike your pooch, this is one alarm clock that is obedient and actually listens to what you say! The Ivee Voice Activated Alarm Clock will also come equipped with a built-in FM radio and a timer, and it sports a rather generous 5″ LED display, where it will be accompanied by half a dozen natural, soothing sleep sounds, not to mention being able to respond to over 30 voice commands. Each snooze moment lasts for up to 9 minutes.
