Hasta La Gadget!

Its name is enough to send CEOs into cold sweats, which is why the rest of the mobile world spent last week announcing their hardware back-to-back to steal a march on this handset. Now, after all of the rumor, speculation and leaks, Apple’s sixth iPhone has finally been unveiled in San Francisco. We’ve got around 45 minutes before the world begins idly speculating about next year’s iteration, so let’s spend what little time we have delving into what’s changed between now and the last time we were here.

Things just kicked off here in San Fransisco where momentarily Apple will be unveiling the all new iPhone 5. We expect some great things to come from today’s event but as usual they’re talking numbers. In case you’re not following along you can watch it all unfold on our live blog at live.slashgear.com, then check out the mind boggling numbers below.

Last year Apple announced 300m iPods sold and over 16 billion songs had been downloaded, but now just a short year later those numbers have surely grown by huge margins across the board. Today while on stage Apple’s man in charge Tim Cook just stated store numbers and Mountain Lion upgrades, surely devices are next. Apple has stores in over 12 countries, and announced that they’ve served over 83 million visitors. Pretty impressive numbers to say the least. He also briefly talked Mountain Lion upgrades for OSX stating over 7 million copies have been sold. Oh and don’t forget the fact that they’ve now sold over 400 million iOS devices.

With the launch of the all new iPhone 5 coming up shortly, those stores will soon be full of huge lines and eager patrons looking to buy the next big thing. This event has just kicked off and surely we’ll be hearing plenty of other impressive numbers from Apple, then the star of the show which we all know is the iPhone 5. We still don’t know exactly what they’re going to call it (“new,” 4G, 5, 6…?) but the banner above may be a big clue that we’re about to see the iPhone 5 unveiled. You hear that? It’s the sound of tech journalists eagerly queueing up in San Francisco for tomorrow’s Apple event. This week is all about the latest iPhone, and while we’re still not quite sure what to call the thing, we can certainly attest to the fact that we’ll be saying it a lot for a while to come. As they did with last year’s iPhone event — and March’s iPad announcement — Tim and Darren will be bringing you a livestream from the streets of San Francisco both before and after the event. Keep locked on Engadget at around 10:30AM ET to get their full predictions. A new report from Reuters claims that Apple and Google CEOs Tim Cook and Larry Page have been conducting private one-on-one settlement talks regarding all these outstanding patent issues. Apparently they’ve been engaged in private discussions behind the scenes for well over the past week according to the report.

Reuters suggests that the two heavy hitters were conducting phone conversations last week and that it won’t be the last one either. These talks have covered a range of intellectual property matters, including the ongoing mobile patent disputes between Apple and Android OEM’s. Most recently they won a huge battle vs Samsung and I’m sure you’re all well aware of that money draining outcome.

Discussion and friendly talks have also been being conducted on lower levels instead of just the CEOs, hinting that both companies could possibly be looking to end these tiresome lawsuits and patent issues. Hopefully we can all just get along and agree to a “truce” as Reuters puts it – although that is unlikely.

Apple’s late Steve Jobs has openly denounced Google’s Android as a “stolen product,” and went as far as saying he’d use every penny of Apple’s cashcow to “destroy Android” and even followed that by stating he was willing to “go thermonuclear war on this.” Apple and Google’s relationship with apps like YouTube and Google Maps have been growing further and further apart in iOS, so the current state of the relationship is unclear. The next phone call between the two CEOs was scheduled for this Friday but was apparently canceled for unknown reasons. Hopefully something positive comes from these talks but we’ll just have to wait and see.
