Just one hour to go until Apple’s launch event, here’s the scene in San Francisco

Just one hour to go until Apple's launch event, here's the scene in San Francisco

What does the media queue for a major launch event look like? Picture the line in front of an Apple Store before any new product hits the shelves, add in a few hundred cameras and sat trucks, and there you go. Weather-wise, the scene is a bit dreary outside the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in downtown San Francisco, but things are undoubtedly heating up inside the relatively petite venue, beyond those black velvet ropes and the white polo shirt-clad security team. The scene outside will be long forgotten less than an hour from now, so click through the gallery below before it fades to irrelevancy, then hit up our liveblog to catch all the action inside.

Engadget will be broadcasting live outside of Apple’s iPhone event tomorrow!

You hear that? It’s the sound of tech journalists eagerly queueing up in San Francisco for tomorrow’s Apple event. This week is all about the latest iPhone, and while we’re still not quite sure what to call the thing, we can certainly attest to the fact that we’ll be saying it a lot for a while to come. As they did with last year’s iPhone event — and March’s iPad announcement — Tim and Darren will be bringing you a livestream from the streets of San Francisco both before and after the event. Keep locked on Engadget at around 10:30AM ET to get their full predictions. And while, as per usual, Apple’s not into letting third-parties broadcast from inside, you can still follow along with our liveblog at home.

Tim Cook and Larry Page reportedly chat about patent war

Tim Cook and Larry Page reportedly chat about patent wars

According to Reuters, Tim Cook and Larry Page have been having behind the scenes chats over the last week or so, most notably about the ongoing patent proxy war between the two companies. According to sources, the Apple and Google CEOs spoke last week over the phone and are planning a meeting where, hopefully, they can hash out some of their differences. Discussions are also apparently taking place at lower levels, which could indicate this is a concerted effort to put to rest the tiresome battles over intellectual property. Unfortunately, details about what exactly the two talked about, and how broad those conversations were are unknown. But, it’s definitely a good sign that the two sides are talking. Perhaps the relatively new corporate heads can avoid going completely “thermonuclear,” as Cook’s predecessor infamously threatened.

Update: All Things D has gotten confirmation from its own sources, and points out that Google is “wearing several hats here,” including one as the owner of Motorola Mobility, which is currently suing Apple. However, we’re still holding out hope that the licensing deal struck between those two companies is a sign of better days to come.

Made in America: could your next phone be homegrown?

Made in America could your next phone be homegrown

“Made in America.” For some reason, my parents — and the parents of many of my peers — take great pride in seeing that phrase. I’ve seen people buy inferior products just because the label on the back proclaimed that it was thrown together in one of our 50 great states instead of across some imaginary line in “another country.” Part of me wonders if people actually check to see if said claims are legitimate. As a business graduate, I fully understand the importance of producing goods within one’s borders. There’s a delicate balance that needs to be struck between imports and exports, and a huge part of a nation’s economic growth hinges on how well that balance is executed.

I suspect the generation before mine remembers a very different America than the one I’ve grown up in — one where smokestacks outnumbered high-rise buildings, and one where jobs requiring steel-toe shoes were more lauded than those requiring a fancy degree and “knowing the right guy.” Manufacturing was the backbone of America through some really, really trying times, and there’s some sense of national pride that comes along with images of swinging hammers and climbing ladders. “We built this country,” as they say.
