Physicists construct the most accurate clock the world has ever seen

DNP clocks clocks all the time clocks

Calling a clock the most accurate ever may sound like hyperbole, but physicists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Boulder, Colorado have built a pair of devices that can claim that title. The team used an optical lattice to address an issue that plagues atomic clockmakers: constantly shifting frequencies that negatively impact the accuracy of their measurements. For example, a single second can be defined by the frequency of light emitted by an atom when electrons jump from one state to the next, but those frequencies change as the atom moves. The optical lattice essentially suspends atoms to minimize the Doppler effect produced by that movement. By combining the lattice with the element ytterbium, the group was able to create a device that measures time with a precision of one part in 1018. To put that into perspective, Andrew Ludlow, one of the paper’s authors, said, “A measurement at the 1018 fractional level is equivalent to specifying the age of the known universe to a precision of less than one second.” To read more about the team’s work, you can find the full PDF at the source.

The Future Will Hilariously Remember the Internet As a Terrible Dark Age

How will the future look back at 2013? Will they be in awe of the sheer number of hours we spent on the Internet like we’re in awe of the cast of Mad Men drinking and smoking? Will they be in disbelief that many people spent most of their waking hours in front of a computer? Will they eventually be saved from the Internet or will they be even worse than us? The Poke imagines a future where the Internet was destroyed and its survivors remember how dark and time wasting the Internet era was. Go outside! [The Poke via Laughing Squid] More »

Jony Ive, Marissa Mayer, Sheryl Sandberg among Time’s 100 most influential people

Time Magazine released its list of the 100 most influential people in the world today, and many technology visionaries made the list, including several executives. Apple’s Jonathan Ive, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, and Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, and Samsung CEO Oh-Hyun Kwon all made it on the list.

Each of the 100 people selected for the list comes with a short essay on why that person deserved such an honor. However, the essays are written by another prominent personality or someone close to them. Ive’s essay was written by U2 frontman Bono, while Mayer’s essay was written by former Google CEO and current chairman Eric Schmidt.

Other people that made the list include Minecraft developers Markus Persson and Jens Bergensten, who came in at number 2 in the reader poll for the list. Tesla Motors and SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk is also on the list, as is director Steven Spielberg and Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos.

The list is split between five categories, which include Titans, Pioneers, Leaders, Icons, and Artists. Interestingly enough, Jony Ive was included in the Artists list because of his iconic design work at Apple, while Mayer was included in the Pioneers list for her shake up at Yahoo, where she aims to turn the company completely around.

Minecraft Creator Markus “Notch” Persson ranks #2 in TIME 100 poll

Markus “Notch” Persson, the creator of Minecraft, has claimed the #2 position in Time Magazine’s2013 Time 100 Poll“. The ranking is based on how influential a person is, making Notch the 2nd most influential person in the world. He garnered 156,694 votes from Time Magazine voters, falling short about 16.5 thousand votes below Mohamed Morsi, the president of Egypt. Notch did, however, manage to beat out Kim Dotcom for 2nd place by nearly 40,000 votes.

In a different poll, 1st place nominee Mohamed Morsi received 220,907 votes from people who believe he isn’t the most influential person in the world, a number that greatly outweighs the 173,091 votes from people who think otherwise. In that same poll, only 18,694 people believe that Notch isn’t the most influential person in the world. Time Magazine will take these numbers into account when it comes out with its final list on April 18th.

A couple of months ago, Notch revealed in a Reddit post that he made $101 million last year from Minecraft. It was a huge shock to him. He grew up in a “relatively poor family” and got a decent job later on in life. He described his life as normal. Then “all of a sudden” he came into a bunch of money thanks to his hobbies of playing games and programming, which resulted in the creation of Minecraft. He gives fellow redditors his advice on how money should be used. He says,

“I think the right way to use money like this is to set a decent portion aside to make sure my family is comfortable, spend some on living out your dreams, and then try to put the rest towards making society a better place. For me, this includes charities that help children, and charities that help promote freedoms I think are vital in the coming dozen of years, such as the EFF.”

Even Kim Dotcom, who was voted as the 3rd most influential person in the world, believes that Notch should be the winner of the poll. Kim Dotcom took to Twitter to encourage his followers to vote for Notch because, “he gave us the amazing world of Minecraft and deserves to win.” Minecraft has become an extremely popular game, just reaching 10 million PC sales earlier this month. Microsoft plans on releasing an Xbox 360-specific version of the game on June 4th.

Manhattan’s Oldest Time-Keeping Sidewalk Has Been Ticking for Over a Century

Deep in lower Manhattan, embedded in the sidewalk, is a clock that’s been ticking since long before you knew what time was. Installed in 1889 with a single redesign in 1940, the timepiece has counted off hundreds of minutes, and tens of millions of seconds, all while withstanding the endless march of both time and the pedestrians above it. Why Daylight Saving Time Is Pointless

Ugh. You’re up an hour early, your body hates you for it, and even a gallon of coffee can’t get your day on track. Daylight savings sucks. But you know the worst part? It doesn’t have to be like this. More »

DIY Doctor Who Crack in the Wall Could Destabilize Space and Time

Remember that season of Doctor Who when there was a crack in Amy Pond’s wall? Well, now you can have a crack in your wall that looks just like it. Let’s just hope it doesn’t cause the universe to explode. Or implode. Whatever.
crack in time
This Crack in the Wall is a custom made, battery powered LED array, set into a metal frame. It’s not only a cool modern design, but it makes for a stylish way to illuminate your wall, while keeping things true to Who.

If you want to try and build one for yourself, there are a few pictures here that might help you create one like it. Just make sure that you do it right. I don’t want to be erased from history because of your shoddy craftsmanship.

Time & Wireless Charging Station

Everyone should own some sort of bedside clock to help them keep time whenever they snooze late into the morning, or just to know at what bewitching hour they keep on getting up at night, as though there was some sort of spiritual force oppressing them, so that they can share all the details with the visiting exorcist. Well, other than that, just simply having a clock is a must for any home, as time and tide wait for no man, so keeping the correct time always is essential. Better yet, why not if your time keeping machine also has more than one basic functionality built in, like the Time & Wireless Charging Station?

This smart clock will do far more than just tell you the time, as it will also come with a weather station, projection clock as well as charger that does things the wireless way. Basically, it will play nice with Qi-enabled wireless devices, now how about that? This radio-controlled clock will depict the indoor temperature and boast of a 5-channel outdoor temperature display, sporting a 2-minute crescendo and 8-minute snooze alarm function, and a magnet-free charging pad that paves the way for greater freedom of placement for devices while charging. Sounds like the ideal way to usher 2013, no?
