Scent Rhythm Watch Lets You Smell What Time It Is

Can you tell the time based on scent alone? People encounter different smells throughout the day. From the smell of freshly-brewed coffee to car exhaust or printer toner, it’s all in a day’s work for some.

Hardware designer and physical computing lecturer Aisen Caro Chacin stripped away the specifics and went with common and general smells for her concept watch called Scent Rhythm.

The wristwatch is unusual in the sense that it does away with hour and minute hands in favor of a four-chambered timepiece that emits distinct smells at certain times of day to indicate the current time – or rather, the current time period.

The watch is attuned to a person’s circadian rhythm, or internal body clock, which regulates the 24-hour cycle of the body’s biological processes. Correspondingly, the watch keeps track of time in four segments of six hours each, and triggers the related scent emitter. From 6 am to midday, or the rise period, the Scent Rhythm emits whiffs of coffee with caffeine.

Scent Rhythm isn’t for sale, although design files and its parts list are available on Aisen’s website, in case you want to find out more about its inner workings and how it was made.

An Elaborate Mechanical Sundial That Doesn’t Need a Drop of Sunlight

At first glance it looks like a giant, industrial, animated chandelier hanging over your head. But instead of just illuminating a room with its imposing glow, artist Conrad Shawcross’ Timepiece doubles as a modern take on the sundial. Because unlike the ancient clocks that kept our ancestors on time, this one doesn’t need the sun at all.

Some folks absolutely love fishing, where their devotion to the sport or activity is clearly on par with those who cannot get enough of golf. Well, being out in the open sea, or by the creek, you would definitely want to be well equipped, and a timepiece can be said to be a crucial piece of equipment for you to wear. Delete Clock Erases Your Schedule as Time Passes

Regardless of how good or bad a person’s memory is, I think everyone needs some sort of a planner. Life can get so busy and hectic sometimes that you won’t be able to keep up without something like a calendar or organizer to help you do so.

If you can’t be bothered with a small datebook or your smartphone, then how about something you can hang on your wall instead – in the form of the Delete Clock?

Delete Clock

It’s a pretty neat concept designed by Li Ke, Pang Sheng Li, and Chen Yi Lin. The face of the clock has a dry-erase whiteboard surface, and it offers generous spaces for you to write down reminders or appointments on the applicable time block. The longer hand is the hour hand, while the shorter one is the minute hand.

The hour hand has two functions: it holds the whiteboard pen in place so you don’t have to worry about losing it, and it’s got an eraser on the reverse, which wipes the board clean as it moves around the clock, wiping your appointments and tasks as they pass. How’s that for killing two birds with one stone?

Delete Clock1

Of course this probable isn’t for you if you like to keep a history of past appointments, because once they’ve passed, they’re gone forever with the Delete Clock.

EU Watches help you tell the time in style

I know that with the advent of smartphones and tablets, not many people bother to buy a watch anymore to tell the time. Most of the time, the devices that we use, as well as computers that we sit in front of, will have a clock program built-in so that you know whether it is time to punch out and head home, or to take a break for lunch. Having said that, the luxury watch market is not affected by this phenomenon, but ordinary watches? It will take far more than just a pretty face to capture the attention of potential buyers. Watches need to offer more than just to tell the time, which is why the £24.99 Eu Watch does make plenty of sense, coming in a variety of colors such as black, blue, Funky Black/Red Face, Funky Blue/Red Face and purple.

The Eu Watches were inspired by the building blocks of our childhood (and adulthood too, some say), where this oddly euro-centrically named EU Watches will feature a beautiful, blocky design that arrives in different and bold color combinations. Apart from sporting all the digital bells and whistles that one might expect from a modern-day digital watch, they are also highly durable and will not cause your biceps to bulge when you wear it. This unisex timepiece will come with functions such as Day/Date, an alarm, a stopwatch and of course, the all important backlight.

SEIKO – Astron GPS Solar watch – SAST015/SAST017/SAST019

Precise GPS time-keeping, that automatically adjusts to your time zone. By developing a low-energy-consumption GPS receiver, Seiko has been able to create a watch that connects to the GPS network and uses it to identify both time of day and time zone. The new Astron recognises all 39 time zones on earth, is precise to one second every 100,000 years, and by taking all the energy it needs from light, it never needs a battery change, and a power reserve indicator shows the amount of stored …

Equation Watch tells the time using math

When I was a kid, I used to wonder just why am I studying all of the different mathematical formulas when I do not need to use them in real life? Oh, the naivety of it all! It seems that mathematics keep the world going, as they envelop just about every single bit of our life. The way physics calculations work, those require math. How about the best meal you’ve ever tasted? Math is involved, too, as you will need to measure out all the ingredients correctly. There is no escaping math, which is why it would be cool to tote the $29.99 Equation Watch around.

Sure, you can always fall back on a digital watch’s face, but where’s the fun in that? An analog watch is so much cooler due to the moving parts, and the Equation Watch goes one up as it requires you to work that brain, with results of mathematical equations being the current hour, although you can always tell from the hands’ positions alone without having to crack your head. Still, I am quite sure that checking out the different equations each day will drum into your subconscious the result automatically.

Doctor Who Dalek R/C Watch

Doctor Who fans, listen up! Now is definitely not the time to back out from what is one of the cooler and more affordable Doctor Who merchandise. Heck, if you think that your other half might appreciate this a whole lot more compared to the umpteenth tie that you are getting him for this coming Valentine’s Day, then perhaps it would bode the both of you well to pick up the $34.99 Doctor Who Dalek R/C Watch.

Other than tell the time (which some would claim that this is its secondary function), the Doctor Who Dalek R/C Watch sports a detachable mini blue-colored Dalek that when placed on a flat surface and is within range of the digital watch, it can be controlled remotely using the buttons located on your new timepiece. Whenever not in use, make sure your favorite exterminator will remain attached to the watch or to a keychain.

This does seem to be quite a novel idea, and kids might just fall for it despite us being in the iPhone age at the moment. Who knows, it might just be as popular as those calculator watches with remote control capability from Casio all those years ago?

DNP Tokyoflash launches the Kisai Maru watch, lets you live out your Tony Stark fantasies video

It’s that time of the week when Tokyoflash launches another one of its charming, barely-decipherable timepieces. Except, this time out, the face is eminently readable — with the only baffling addition a ring that joins the minute and hour hands. While it’s available in black and silver, the sienna variant with its reddish-brown casing go hand-in-hand with the bracelet’s chunky stylings to make it eerily reminiscent of Tony Stark’s superhero outfit. If you’d to indulge your own arc reactor-infused fantasies, the company is selling the timepiece for $109 (€85, £68) until 2:00 AM ET Saturday, after which it’ll set you back $149 (€116, £93). If you want to take a moment to see it in action before you order a cheeseburger and declare yourself Iron Man, head on past the break.
