Paper Blade E-Ink Watch Concept Offers a Refreshingly Different Design

I think E-ink display watches are some of the most underrated timepieces out there. They have cool, modern and easy-on-the-eyes displays, with the only downside being their lack of self-illumination. While there aren’t a ton of E-ink watches on the market, I’d love to see this cool design concept get produced.

paper blade watch concept 1

Conceived by UK designer Devindh, the Paper Blade watch would feature a unique geometric grid for its face, which creates a stencil for the E-ink display underneath. At first glance, the time seems a little tricky to read, but once you read the description of the display, it’s not too challenging: “The grid divides the paper into 4 ‘cells’. Upper and lower cells show the day, month, and year, and the central ‘cell’ shows the time in 24 hr format (the smaller digits showing minutes, and the larger digits showing hours).” So the watch above shows the time “23:53″ (or 11:53 pm). Make sense?

The day and date display mimics the geometric forms of the watch face, completing the look. Devindh envisions the watch coming in a variety of color combinations, but I have to say my favorite is the copper-cased design up top. You don’t frequently find watches in copper – at least not good looking, modern ones.

Higgs Boson Watch Puts the God Particle on Your Wrist

While you might think you need to be a physicist with a particle accelerator to experience the elusive Higgs Boson particle, you’re right. But if you’d like to pay tribute to the recent accomplishments of the CMS and ATLAS teams at the Large Hadron Collider, then grab this watch.

higgs boson 1

The ultimate in geeky timepieces, the Higgs Boson watch displays a spiraling display which is supposed to represent the so-called “God Particle,” without which, not a single atom would hold together in the universe, and we wouldn’t exist. While I’m not sure how accurate the design is, it can definitely tell time.

Best of all, this thing will cost you way less than building your own backyard particle accelerator. It’s just $39.95(USD) over at Gadgets & Gear. Nobel Prize sold separately.

The 1:Face Watch: Support a Good Cause While Telling the Time

You’ve probably seen people with rubber-band-like bracelets advocating one cause or another, but if you’re like me, you’d appreciate something a little more functional. The 1:Face Watch supports a variety of causes and lets you tell the time at the same time.

face watch indiegogo project

The 1:Face Watch was designed by Mirza Minds. It’s quite minimal, which I like. Each color supports a different cause. The white watch provides food for children, the pink watch provides a mammogram for someone in need.

All of these causes are backed by reputable charities, so you don’t have to worry about where your money is going to.

The 1:Face Watch was launched as an Indiegogo project, and you can get in on the action for as little as $40(USD). With 27 days left, the project has amassed over $100,000 in funding, with a goal of $25,000 so it will definitely go into production

Vintage Record Zombie Clocks: Dawn of the Dead Vinyl

Vintage vinyl records are fun to listen to, but what do you do with all of that old stuff that you don’t want to listen to? Well, you can always make some Zombie record clocks like Etsy seller MoralMustache.
zombie album
This is the perfect use for all of those warped old vinyl records that you’ve been storing and not listening to. Don’t toss them out with the garbage, get into the Zombie groove and turn them into clocks that remind you of the impending Zombie Apocalypse.

This one has zombies rising from their graves and ready to kill as one a guy with a chainsaw gets ready to collect some heads. It’s perfect for Halloween. It will cost you $42.50(USD).

Mass Effect N7 Ambassador Watch: Spectre Gadget

If the Mass Effect Wikia is to be believed, the Omni-tool is a flashlight, a scanner, a camera, a media player, a gaming console, a hacking tool, a recycling machine, a medical device and of course a weapon. But apparently one thing it is not is a watch. Thankfully BioWare has the answer.

As you can see the watch is restrained in its geekiness. If you’re looking to outdork someone you’ll be better off with the Watch Boy. The strap and bezel of the N7 Ambassador watch are both made from stainless steel strap and bezel . It’s water resistant up to 300ft,  it has a carbon fiber dial, a laser etching of the N7 and Mass Effect logos as well as the individual number of the watch at the back and a Swiss movement – you won’t be stuck calibrating this machine.

Its retail price is $475 (USD), but you have to deposit $150 at BioWare’s store in order to guarantee your purchase. I highly recommend you do that ASAP if you want this watch, because the Reapers are coming N7 Ambassador watch is limited to only 500 units.

Back to the Future Watch Built Like a DeLorean

Think you’re a real Back To The Future fan? Here’s a memento that I bet you don’t have. This DeLorean DNA Watch by Romain Jerome is made from the same stainless steel used to make a DeLorean DMC-12, just like the one that Doc Brown and Marty McFuy drove in the movies.

The strap is even inspired by the DeLorean’s interior, made from upholstered leather and anthracite grey stitching like the seats in the car. Unfortunately, these watches are limited to only 81 pieces. Why they didn’t make 88, I have no idea. These babies will cost you a cool $15,900(USD). So you’ll need to get a future sports almanac and come back to make some money before you can afford one.

It’s a pretty sweet looking watch. Marty would approve. It’s too bad I don’t have a spare 15 grand and an actual DeLorean to go with it.

Apple agrees to license for Swiss railway clock in iOS 6, knows what time it is

Apple licenses Swiss railway clock, knows what time it is

When Swiss federal railway organization SBB and the Mondaine Group pointed out that the iOS 6 clock face looked remarkably like theirs, they weren’t so much upset as clearing their throat politely — it would be nice to get credit, if you don’t mind. That kindness has been met with some reciprocity, as SBB has confirmed a licensing deal with Apple that gives the iPad builder rights to use the iconic timepiece in its mobile OS. Exact terms aren’t forthcoming, although it’s likely not a princely sum when SBB is better known for punctuality than wheeling and dealing. All we know is that Apple can at last live with a good conscience when it checks the time in Geneva.

iBell iPhone Alarm Dock Might Make You Throw Your Phone Away

If you’re the type who needs a substantial amount of outside stimuli to wake up, call me and I’ll gladly punch to consciousness you every morning. Alternatively, if you have an iPhone or an iPod Touch you might want to get the iBell or the iBell Mini.

ibell iphone alarm

The iBell and iBell Mini both come with two bells similar to the ones found in traditional alarm clocks. The iBell is a cradle that can also be plugged in to charge your iOS device, while the more portable iBell Mini just plugs into the dock connector of your iPhone or iPod Touch. Yep, it uses the 30-pin dock connector so you’ll have to use an adapter if you own the iPhone 5. You can pre-order the iBell and iBell Mini from Japan Trend Shop for $49 (USD) and $38, respectively.

R2-D2 Action Alarm Clock: Wake Me Obi Wan Kenobi, You’re My Only Hope

In this world of Star Wars inspired gadgets, sometimes the same device gets rehashed. Yes, we’ve seen an R2-D2 alarm clock before, but that model simply projected the time on the ceiling. This new one actually has movements and sounds like the little droid when it wakes you.

r2 dw action alarm clock

A recent import from Japan, this R2-D2 Action Alarm clock is a precisely-detailed model of R2 (other than the part where there’s an LCD clock hiding out in his chest.) What’s cool about this droid is that you can set him on the floor, and he’ll drive around when the alarm goes off. His head even lights up, and the alarm sounds are based on samples from the films. Just be sure not to step on the 6.5 inch-tall droid on the way to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

You can choose wake-up sounds from Princess Leia’s “Help me Obi Wan Kenobi” message, several R2-D2 beeps and bleeps, as well as the main title music from Star Wars and Cantina Band if you feel like dancing first thing in the morning. Sorry, no Yub Nub, though.

So scoot on over to Strapya World now, where you can grab the R2-D2 Action Alarm Clock for about $100(USD).

Tokyoflash Kisai Logo Watch: It’s Binary Time

Well I have to say that the blue version of Tokyoflash’s new Kisai Logo watch looks pretty fetching. I think that the best part is the binary time display, which looks really cool yet cryptic.

tokyoflash kisai logo watch blue

As a bonus, the Tokyoflash Kisai Logo watch is very easy to read in its normal mode. A block indicates the hour and there are some funky numbers in the middle that represent the minutes. It’s pretty straightforward. You can toggle on the binary time display and then, watch out, because it will take anyone time to figure out how it works.

kisai logo binary

The watch features an always-on LCD that you don’t have to activate with a button, which is a very nice feature since it can get annoying with these kinds of watches. It uses a standard battery, so no USB recharging for this watch.

The body is stainless steel and it has an acetate strap. The Kisai Logo is available in black, white or blue, with a matching strap and display – and retails for $139 (USD).
