This mosaic of images taken from 2004 to 2013 the shutter-snapping Cassini spacecraft shows the most

This mosaic of images taken from 2004 to 2013 the shutter-snapping Cassini spacecraft shows the most detailed look at the famous lakes on the surface of Saturn’s moon, Titan. Thought to be filled with methane and ethane, the lakes are the only areas filled with standing liquid in the entire solar system except, of course, for Earth. Check out the flyover video for a closer look. [NASA]

Did you know that you can fly in Titan by flapping your (winged) arms?

Did you know that you can fly in Titan by flapping your (winged) arms?

Next time you go to Titan—one of Saturn’s moons—remember this cool factoid: "The atmosphere is so thick and the gravity so low that humans could fly through it by flapping ‘wings’ attached to their arms" as pointed out in Robert Zubrin’s Entering Space: Creating a Spacefaring Civilization. How awesome would that be?

NVIDIA introduces its Battlebox PC program for 4K gaming, powering the LHC

NVIDIA introduces its Battlebox PC program for 4K gaming, powering the LHC

Okay, okay, NVIDIA’s “Battlebox” PCs won’t quite power the Large Hadron Collider, but it will offer more power than you’ll need to play basically any game available (or any game arriving in the coming holiday deluge). The initiative focuses on NVIDIA working with several boutique PC makers to provide 2-way SLI setups on its GTX 780 and Titan GPUs, capable of supporting gaming in 4K resolution. Providers vary between North America and Europe, but the usual players are on board: Falcon Northwest, Maingear, Cyberpower, etc.

Of course, with great power comes great cost — Chillblast’s Fusion Battlebox, for instance, starts at £2,999.00 (about $4,870), and Maingear’s Shift starts at $2,300 — so you’d better be ready to shell out some serious cash for 4K gaming.

Blizzard’s Project Titan Unlikely To Be Subscription-Based

Blizzards Project Titan Unlikely To Be Subscription BasedAvid Blizzard fans will have probably heard that the company is currently working on a new MMO codenamed “Titan”, which last we heard has potentially been delayed. In any case whilst the details of the game remain a mystery and a secret, its existence is pretty well-known and thanks to Blizzard’s President, Mike Morhaime in an investor’s call today, it was revealed that the game will most likely not be taking the subscription route unlike Blizzard’s current MMO, World of Warcraft.

According to Morhaime, “We’re in the process of selecting a new direction for the project and re-envisioning what we want the game to be […] While we can’t talk about the details yet, it is unlikely to be a subscription-based MMORPG.” He then went on to reiterate that there has not been any official release date or a projected release date yet, despite the rumors which suggested 2016. In any case if Blizzard is not taking the subscription route, we’re assuming free-to-play could be one of the models that the developer is considering.

Many MMOs have taken the F2P route and given Blizzard’s popularity and massive fan base, we expect that whichever direction the company takes they will definitely have customers.

Tianhe-2 supercomputer claims the lead in Top 500 list, thanks its 3.1 million processor cores

As predicted, Chinese supercomputer Tianhe-2 (also known as the Milky Way-2) has now been crowned the most powerful supercomputer in the world. Arriving years ahead of schedule, and packing 32,000 Xeon processors alongside 48,000 Xeon Phi accelerator processors, the supercomputer can manage a quadrillion mathematical calculations per second (33.85 petaflops), double that of last year’s king (and closest rival), the Titan. In this year’s results, 80 percent of the Top 500 used Intel processors, while 67 percent had processors with eight or more cores — as clock speeds stall, supercomputer development has now focused on processors running in parallel. Top 500 editor Jack Dongarra adds that “most of the features of the [Tianhe-2] system were developed in China, and they are only using Intel for the main compute part,” meaning that you can expect to see more Chinese entrants (and possibly champions) over the next few years. For now, however, the US still claims the majority of the Top 500, with 253 top-ranking supercomputers.
