Samsung web profile reveals GTi8805 sporting Tizen, 720p display

Samsung committed to launching Tizen devices almost as soon as 2013 began, but there has been little to show for its promise outside of a developer phone. To our relief, there are signs of sustained interest in the project: Techtastic has spotted a Samsung user agent profile for the Tizen-toting GT-i8805. The web code suggests that the company is playing it safe with its first wave of hardware for the OS, however. While the i8805 appears to support LTE, mentions of a 720p display and an older ARM Cortex-A9 chip probably won’t have technofreaks regretting their Galaxy S 4 purchase. Even so, the sighting should give hope to those who’ve been waiting months on end for Bada’s spiritual successor.

Possible Samsung Tizen Device Model Numbers (GT-I8800/GT-I8805) Revealed

Possible Samsung Tizen Device Model Numbers (GT I8800/GT I8805) RevealedAs Android is not owned by Samsung, we guess the South Korean manufacturer knows how precarious it is if they were to put all their eggs into the Android basket, which is why it is not surprising that they have branched out to Windows Phone, and recently Tizen. The first Tizen smartphone by Samsung has yet to be announced, but it seems that model numbers of upcoming Tizen devices may have been identified by the good folks at Blog of Mobile (Japanese).

The website has managed to discovered two devices which feature the model numbers GT-I880 and GT-I8805, although we’re guessing they are probably the same device, with the latter probably offering an additional feature such as dual SIM slots or LTE. Further digging by the site revealed this information: Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Tizen 2.1; en-us; SAMSUNG GT-I8800) AppleWebKit/537.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/2.1.0 Mobile, possibly confirming that these are indeed Tizen-based phones.

Samsung expects to debut Tizen devices later this year, so we guess until then, the GT-I8800 and GT-I8805 are possible Tizen models to look out for.

Samsung to release high-end Tizen handset in August or September

We’ve heard this before, but it has now been confirmed – Samsung will be releasing a Tizen-based smartphone this year. The information comes from Samsung’s Executive Vice President of its mobile business, who offered the information in Seoul earlier this week. The handset will be very high-end, according to his statement.

Said Samsung’s Lee Young Hee, “The Tizen phone will be out in August or September, and this will be in the high-end category. The device will be the best product equipped with the best specifications.” Unfortunately, no other details were dropped about the handset, such as what these “best specifications” will be.

This comes at a time when Samsung has seen a huge increase in handset sales, the vast majority of which run the Android mobile operating system. The move to launch a Tizen-based handset will be a step towards reducing its reliance on the Google OS and will provide consumers with another option.

We saw various Tizen rumors crop up throughout 2012, with some going back as far as May, such as the Tizen handset caught on camera that is believed to be a Samsung device (pictured above). In September, we reported that rumor had it Samsung would be releasing a Tizen-based Galaxy smartphone, and then in December sources claimed that a Samsung Tizen device would be arriving in 2013 with Vodafone and DoCoMo.

Samsung Tizen Devices Expected In Q3 2013

Samsung Tizen Devices Expected In Q3 2013When it comes to smartphone operating systems, iOS and Android are clearly dominating, with smaller operating systems such as Windows Phone and Blackberry 10 falling behind. With that being said, do we really need another operating system in the mix? We know that Samsung has been working on their Tizen operating system but will it see the same amount of success iOS and Android have? Perhaps with the backing of Samsung and their reputation it just might, but we will have to wait and find out. The question is, when can we expect to start seeing Tizen powered smartphones? Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Samsung’s newly appointed co-CEO JK Shin has revealed that we can look forward to Samsung releasing a Tizen smartphone in Q3 this year.

Shin stated that Samsung is currently in the process of merging Bada (another Samsung operating system) with Tizen (developed by Samsung and Intel), and a Q3 release is likely. We’re not sure what kind of hardware we are looking at or what sort of experience to expect, but it should be noted that Samsung will not be alone in their release. Fujitsu and NEC have been reported to have jumped aboard the Tizen bandwagon as well, although we will have to wait until 2014 to see the fruits of their labor. What say you, will Tizen be able to compete with the likes of iOS and Android?

Tizen 2.0 SDK and source code emerge from alpha, bring slew of new features

Tizen 2.0 SDK and source code emerge from alpha, bring slew of new features

Sure, an early version of Tizen 2.0 Magnolia may have first emerged last September, but now the SDK and source code have dropped the “alpha” designation for a proper release. After a few months of incubation, the open source OS has been laden with enhanced support for HTML5 and a beefed up Web UI framework that enables full-screen and multi-window features. Developers can now leverage new hardware APIs for Bluetooth and NFC support, and access a device’s call history, calendar and messaging “subsystems.” Support for background applications, text-to-speech and IP Push have also made it into the operating system along with reference applications including the likes of a calendar, gallery and phone app. In addition, a native IDE and a spruced up web development environment have been released with the latest code. Tizen SDK 2.0 released along with screenshots

The SDK and source code for Tizen 2.0 Magnolia has just become available. It shows how far Tizen has come since Tizen 1.0 Larkspur. The operating system actually looks pretty good, and perhaps almost ready for primetime. We already know that Samsung is gearing up to release several Tizen phones this year, and to multiple countries like Korea, Japan, and France. It’s all a part of Samsung’s plan to be less dependent on Google for its success in the mobile industry.

Tizen 2

The new Tizen 2.0 Magnolia SDK features a number of enhancements. There is a new web framework that provides “state-of-the-art” HTML5/W3C API support. There is a new Web UI framework that includes full-screen and multi-window support. There are APIs for Bluetooth and NFC support as well as access to the core apps like calendar, contacts, gallery, phone, settings, and the video player. There is a native framework supporting full-featured application development. Enhanced Web IDE providing WYSIWYG design environment, and a native IDE that provides a project wizard. There are many more features included in the SDK’s release notes.

Following Tizen 2.0, Tizen 2.1 will be released in the 2nd quarter of 2013. It’s a minor update, but it will have new features like account management, application installing service, livebox support, performance optimization, and security enhancements. There will also be performance enhancements without API modification or removal.

Tizen 2.0 Magnolia looks good, and could be a start of a new chapter for Samsung. Samsung is already hugely popular in the mobile industry thanks to its high-end Galaxy line, so it may have the pull it needs in order to make Tizen a success. While Tizen does look nice, Samsung also has to make sure that it has a good app selection that includes popular apps like Instagram and Facebook. With a huge app store, and the ability to launch the Tizen OS on a high-end Galaxy-esque device, it looks like there may be another major OS competitor in the mobile market.

Samsung confirms Tizen handsets for 2013

With Google’s acquisition of Motorola Mobility last year, manufacturers of Android-based devices such as Samsung are, as evidenced by their announcement today*, making moves to cut down their reliance on the big G. This announcement comes straight from Samsung in Suwon, South Korea, where Samsung has made it clear that they’re moving forward with Tizen on a real significant scale.

samsung_tizen_developer_phone-580x386

*Note: today’s announcement did not specifically note that the Motorola deal with Google had anything to do with Samsung’s decision to move forward with Tizen – the operating system born of yester-year’s OS Meego. It’s an important point to make that such a suggestion would not be a fantastically intelligent thing for Samsung to say when Google is still so important to their business with Android. What has been said specifically is a bit of an analysis piece on the situation by Byun Han Joon from KB Investment & Securities in Seoul.

“The Tizen was born as Samsung hoped to lighten its growing dependence on Google on concerns that its top position in the smartphone market may weaken following the Google- Motorola tie-up.” – Byun Han Joon

A report from earlier this week suggested that it wouldn’t just be Korea that’s seeing Tizen devices. The report had both DoCoMo of Japan, Vodafone in Europe, and France Telecom all onboard for a Tizen device (or perhapse more than one Tizen device) for the year 2013. Samsung’s report this week comes in the form of a confirmation that Intel-backed Tizen will, indeed, move forward from here.

“We plan to release new, competitive Tizen devices within this year and will keep expanding the lineup depending on market conditions.” – Samsung

Will you be looking to pick up a Tizen device within the next 12 months? Have a peek at all recent stories on Tizen in the timeline below to see more about this next-generation operating system for Samsung!

Samsung Talks Up Tizen Smartphones

05 samsung logo Samsung Talks Up Tizen SmartphonesThere has been of South Korean conglomerate Samsung working on a Tizen-powered smartphone for a long time already, but Samsung has remained largely mum on any concrete plans throughout the year 2012. Things do look set to change this year, however, as Samsung has already confirmed with Bloomberg BusinessWeek that there will be different Tizen-powered devices that are in the works for a 2013 rollout, and the kind of specifications which we will receive in the end will depend largely on what the market wants. To put it in plain English, the early sales figures would be crucial in shaping up the rest of Samsung’s direction concerning Tizen powered smartphones.

These new Tizen devices are said to be competitive in nature, although we are quite sure that the rest of the world is waiting with bated breath on nitty gritty such as model specifications, prices and timeframe. This might be seen as a move by some for Samsung to reduce their reliance on the Android platform, and put some of their eggs in a basket that saw Intel, Samsung, NTT DoCoMo and Vodafone come together last year to form the Tizen Association.
