TomTom updates navigation app for iPhone and iPad

If you happen to use TomTom’s navigation app on the iPhone or the iPad, here is some bit of news for you – you might want to check out an available update that will introduce new methods of finding and discovering new places to go to. The update will bump up the version number to v1.11, where those who already own the older version of the app will be able to download the update for free, but folks who want to jump aboard the bandwagon for the first time can always purchase it off the App Store for $49.99 a pop.

With this latest update, you are able to navigate to addresses found on the Internet, perform a search with foursquare, and receive the latest TomTom maps to boot, making it the ideal app for those who tend to take short holidays and day trips, helping you arrive at your foursquare destination in a jiffy. In addition, v1.11 will also deliver additional improvements to TomTom Navigation for iPhone such as a more intuitive user experience. [Press Release]

TomTom refreshes Navigation app for iOS, adds social features

TomTom has refreshed its Navigation App for iPhone and iPad with a new user interface, Foursquare integration and constantly updated maps. It’ll also automatically check into your favorite hangouts to avoid forgetting to oust your frenemies at your local coffee house. The revised application will also help you avoid French speed traps that don’t fall foul of new laws on traffic alerts, with the whole thing playing very nice with the recently announced car kit. The app retails for $50 (€70) in the App Store — although we’re not sure how popular it’s going to be if those same features will be bundled in iOS 6.

TomTom launches new hands-free car kit for smartphones

TomTom has announced the launch of its new hands-free car kit for smartphones. The new hands-free car kit comes in two versions, and they are designed to work with the iPhone or other smartphones that use a micro USB charger such as Android phones. The new car kit has advanced noise and echo cancellation systems to reduce background noise for the caller and remove ambient noise for the driver.

Among the features of the new hands-free car kit for smartphones are new mounting options to make the use of the system safer and more convenient. The new smartphone kit has an adjustable grip that will fit any smartphone with or without a case or cover, and the new kit has an extendable microphone. That extendable microphone can be clipped to the sun visor for clear audio.

The new car kit can be paired to two mobile devices at the same time via Bluetooth. Voice-recognition functionality can be activated so the driver can navigate and dial their phone without taking hands off the wheel. The system has an integrated 2-watt speaker for clear voice calls and navigation instructions. The kit also promises to fast charge the phone on the go.

The dual mount mounting system of the new car kit allows the driver to mount the device to the dashboard or the windshield. When mounting to the dashboard the driver uses a self-adhesive disc that is included with the kit. The car kit also has easy to reach answer and reject buttons for voice calls. The iPhone or smartphones version of the new hands-free car kit are available for €99.95. TomTom also offers a kit for the iPhone that includes a Western Europe navigation app for €149.95.

MapQuest picks TomTom Maps to power iPhone and Android turn-by-turn navigation apps

MapQuest picks TomTom Maps to power iPhone and Android turnbyturn navigation apps

Still trying to figure out which way to turn when it comes to on-phone navigation? How’s about a free option to ponder? MapQuest‘s gratis iPhone and Android programs are set to get a heck of a lot better, and soon. The company just announced that TomTom would become its maps provider, enabling it to provide coverage for more than 7.5 million miles of roads across North America. Interestingly, it seems that TomTom is finding new life after the death of the PND (personal navigation device) in software; just last month, Apple knighted TomTom to power its own internal Maps app, which is set to debut with iOS 6.

TomTom opens up MapShare to all 60 million of its GPS units (video)

TomTom's MapShare offers crowdsourced updates as a free daily download

TomTom has seen the inexorable rise of smartphone navigation and decided that it needs a cheaper way of updating its head units. Its cunning solution has been to open its MapShare community to all 60 million TomToms in the wild — which was previously limited just to smartphone apps and select devices. MapShare works by allowing users to update their, erm, maps, when they spot a change has been made, which is then uploaded when they get home. It’ll now be aggregated and pushed out as a free daily download. Users can filter updates, deciding if they want ones submitted by “some,” “many” or those officially verified by the company itself — so don’t bother trying to game the system to make your morning commute easier.

TomTom expands Map Share to all navigation devices

There’s nothing worse than relying on a GPS unit with incorrect map information, so TomTom has opened up its Map Share community so that around 60 million units can take advantage of daily map changes for free. TomTom say that Map Share was previously restricted to a limited number of devices, but now just about everyone can get in on the action.

Any changes in the immediate area, such as new speed limits, blocked roads, or different street names, can now be modified directly on the device. If the user then chooses to do so, they can send the updates to TomTom and the Map Share community so that everyone reaps the benefits for free.

Major changes such as brand new roads or roundabout placements are logged with TomTom, validated, and added to maps on a quarterly basis. The collaborative approach to creating the maps apparently helps TomTom to create “maps [that] accurately reflect reality.”
