Toshiba unveils 2TB Canvio Basics and Special Edition portable drives

It’s still not all that easy to track down a 2TB portable drive. Thankfully, Toshiba is making that extra-large capacity more ubiquitous by shipping an upgrade to its Canvio line of USB 3.0 disks. Both the no-frills Canvio Basics 3.0 and a Canvio Special Edition with a backup software bundle now carry 2TB inside, up from 1.5TB half a year ago. Not satisfied with just the storage boost? You might be with the price: the 2TB Canvio Basics’ $190 starting point is lower than what its WD competition reached when new, and the $220 official price for a Special Edition (we’re already seeing $190 at Best Buy) isn’t that much of a stretch.

Toshiba outs its latest oldies with the TY-CRX70, a new CD and USB player

Ok, I admit it, I never have been really fair in the past with Toshiba and I hope you will believe me when I am saying that I have nothing against the brand and actually I even own a REGZA TV and love it, at least until two dead pixel pop-up 9 month after I bought it… Anyway, it seems that in Japan there is a market for old stuff like and today Toshiba outs the TY-CRX70, a gold old CD and FM/AM Radio combo that even comes, brace yourself, with a USB port and the support of MPA/WMA files …

How would you change the Toshiba Excite 7.7?

How would you change the Toshiba Excite 77

Toshiba’s Excite 7.7 was an Android tablet designed to go head-to-head with Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 7.7. When we were handed one to review, we fell in love with its 1,280 x 800 Super AMOLED Plus display, a 1.3GHz Tegra 3 chipset and a battery life of over 10 hours. It failed, however, as so many do, with its poor cameras, choppy audio performance and a top-heavy launch price that would put off many buyers. But now, time has passed, the price has fallen and plenty of you might have made the investment. So it’s to you that we ask, how’s it going? Why not tell us what, if someone asked you, would you change?

Toshiba unveils L9300 series 4K TVs at CES

Toshiba has announced a new series of 4K Ultra HD TVs at CES this week. The new TV series is the L9300 range and promises four times the resolution of full HD TVs on the market today. The new TV line is powered by the proprietary Toshiba CEVO 4K Quad+Dual Core Processor.

Toshiba says that the L9300 series TVs deliver the highest quality Ultra HD image processing available. The processor inside the TVs is also able to use Resolution Restoration to restore clean and very near ultra HD image quality from content with less than 4K resolution. The TVs also feature color gamut enhancement to improve the intensity of colors.

Toshiba’s L9300 TVs have a 240 Hz refresh rate promising clearer and smoother fast motion video. The TV line also uses the CQ Engine promising superior picture quality controls with Edge Enhancer, Dynamic Gamma, Color Master, and Expert Mode Calibration Capability. The TV also has a new UltraClear Dynamic Noise Reduction feature to create clear images without reducing image detail.

The series of 4K TVs also has advanced Cloud TV functionality offering a connected watching experience. The Cloud TV functionality includes a family calendar to share family events, and personal messaging allowing you to send and receive messages from friends and family. The Cloud TV features also includes a photo album, streaming news, the ability to access content from DLNA-enabled devices, and an integrated TV programming guide with advanced search capabilities. The TV line also has integrated Wi-Fi, Miracast, and WiDi. Toshiba will begin shipping the L9300 4K TVs this summer.

Toshiba Smartwatch tracks health, location, and passive-aggressive mail

Toshiba just wants to know you’re fit, healthy, and eating well, and if its new smartwatch prototype can help you with your email, calls, and messages too, that’s all the better. The company is showing off a new concept watch with a 1.7-inch color OLED display, capable not only of hooking up wirelessly to your smartphone so as to ping over reminders, alerts, message previews, and other notifications, but of tracking your pulse from your wrist and keeping a fitness record. It even uses biometrics for security.

The display runs at 200 x 320 resolution, which is sufficient for multiple lines of text, with simple controls to navigate through the menus and options. As well as messages and calls, it will offer directions pulled from your iOS or Android smartphone, together with news headlines and weather forecasts.

The ECG sensor tracks heart-rate and can keep a record of your fitness, but Toshiba also expects to use it for security: if the smartwatch doesn’t recognize your usual pulse, it won’t unlock. Toshiba also envisages a download store for alternative watch faces and apps.

What most struck us, though, was the content of Toshiba’s looping demo, which included choice messages like “I get so emotional when your [sic] not around. I think the emotion is called happiness.” There’s no telling whether the watch and its charging cradle will actually make it to market, but Toshiba would probably need to slim down the design before that could happen since it’s a chunky block right now.
