Toshiba Ships First MQ01ABDH Hybrid Series Drive

Toshiba is one of the biggest names in storage products, and it offers a wide range of internal storage devices and external storage devices. Toshiba has announced that it has started shipping its first Hybrid Drive MQ01ABDH series (PDF) storage devices. These new Hybrid Drives combine the performance of a SSD with the capacity and pricing of a traditional HDD.

Toshiba offers the drives with capacities of up to 1 TB, and the drives are 2.5-inch form factor with a 9.5 mm height. The new Hybrid Drives use SATA connectivity and have self-learning caching algorithms to learn the data access patterns of the user and optimize performance. These algorithms determine what data should be stored in the flash memory for quick access and what data should be stored on the traditional magnetic platters.

The hybrid drive is initially available in 1 TB and 750 GB capacities. Toshiba says the drives are sized for use in ultrathin and standard notebooks, gaming PCs, AIOs, and slim desktops. The hard drive portion of the Hybrid Drives spins at 5400 RPMs and has an average seek time of 12 ms.

On 1 TB and 750 GB capacity Hybrid Drives the amount of NAND Flash storage is 8 GB. Toshiba says that the design of the Hybrid Series storage devices will enable faster system boot times and faster data access. Pricing on the new drives is unannounced at this time.

Toshiba Hybrid Drive (MQ01ABDH) announced

Toshiba has a spanking new ‘poster boy’ when it comes to media storage on your computers, and we are talking about the Toshiba Hybrid Drive. Also known as the MQ01ABDH series, it is said to deliver a careful balance of performance which you can find in solid state disks (SSDs) with the advantage of capacity and cost-effectiveness of hard disk drives (HDDs), sporting capacities up to 1TB. The new SATA Toshiba Hybrid Drive measures 2.5” in size, and is a mere 9.5mm in height, where it boasts of “self-learning” caching algorithms which will learn the system user’s data access patterns in order to optimize performance.

These self-learning caching algorithms also help manage just which particular user data is stored to the NAND Flash for a quicker response down the road, as well as how the data in the NAND Flash will be updated based on intelligent access pattern learning. Interested parties will be able to select from 750GB and 1TB capacities, where they should start making waves in standard-sized notebooks, gaming PCs, all-in-one and slimline desktops and other digital computing applications. SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: September 24, 2012

We’ve entered the last full week of September, which means that autumn, pumpkins, and little children asking for free candy are all in the near future (for some of us anyway). Today we found out that the iPhone 5 managed to sell 5 million units in its first weekend of availability, and that iOS 6 has been downloaded by 100 million users since it was released last week. Some enthusiastic analysts were left explaining their generous iPhone 5 sales predictions today, while others were saying that the iPhone 5 could top 50 million sales by the end of Q4.

Apple TV was upgraded to iOS 5.1 today, while the company reminded iCloud users that former MobileMe accounts will be downgraded to 5GB of free storage on September 30. Verizon says that its version of the iPhone 5 will remain unlocked, while iOS developers were sending out updates for their apps left and right. One of these developers was Google, which launched an iOS 6/iPhone 5 update for Google Chrome, with Sparrow promising that iPhone 5 support will be coming soon.

Samsung released a list of devices that will soon be updated to Jelly Bean, and T-Mobile was seen trying to pull attention to its 4G network, which is due for some upgrades soon. The Aakash Android 2 tablet was revealed today with a super low price tag, and Facebook did its best to dispel rumors that private messages are popping up on public timelines. Google’s stock hit an all-time high today, breaking company records set back in 2007, and Sony announced some new super-slim external batteries for mobile devices.

Toshiba had some skinny offerings of its own to show off, unveiling the new Canvio Slim 500GB hard drive, and camera samples for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus 2 leaked out today as well. Experts warned that BlackBerry growth has become stagnant and that BlackBerry 10 may not do much to help, while YouTube enhanced its caption translation tools for content creators. In one of the most surprising stories of the day, Myspace began showing off its incoming redesign, and it actually looks really good. Meanwhile, we heard about a particularly nasty Borderlands 2 bug, and Sony reiterated plans to support the PS3 through at least 2015.

Finally tonight, we have a new column by Chris Davies that examines why iPhone 5 users may eventually save the poorly-received Apple Maps app in iOS 6. That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, so go out and enjoy the rest of your night!

Toshiba Canvio Slim Portable HDD

Toshiba Canvio Slim Portable HDD

Toshiba is back with its latest portable HDD namely the Canvio Slim. Measuring at just 9mm thick, the storage device provides a 500GB of storage space and supports USB 3.0 interface. It is compatible with both PC and Mac. The Toshiba Canvio Slim comes bundled with Toshiba’s Backup Now EZ software that enables you to backup your data to the cloud. The Toshiba Canvio Slim portable HDD will be released in October 2012 for $114.99. [Engadget]

Toshiba outs Canvio Slim as world’s thinnest 500GB hard drive

The folks from Toshiba look to continue the trend of packing tons and tons of storage into an extremely small space. Today they’ve outed their latest Canvio Slim portable hard drive and are stating it’s the “world’s thinnest” portable hard drive. Coming in at just 9mm thick offering 500GB of storage for only $115 — lets take a look.

Essentially they are using an Ultrabook class leading 7mm portable HD, packed it into an ultra-sleek enclosure like most portable hard drives, added a few ports and are offering it for an excellent price. This new Canvio drive is extremely small and will fit in nearly all pants or shirt pockets — basically being the size of most smartphones these days.

As a comparison the new iPhone 5 is just 7.6mm thick, and the Galaxy S III is 8.6mm in size. Making this new 500GB portable storage option pretty sleek. Not only is Toshiba’s latest drive sleek and cheap, but it’s also quite fast being operated and powered by USB 3.0, with full compatibility with both PC and Mac. Here’s what Maciek Brzeski, VP of Product Marketing had to say:

As consumer electronics continue to get thinner, lighter and more portable, we recognized a huge demand to create a storage device that is in line with those trends,” and With the Canvio Slim, consumers can now easily stash their storage device right along with their Ultrabook, knowing that their data is always safe, even when they’re on the go.”

Other specs include 5400 RPM and an 8MB cache buffer, along with a 12 ms average seek time. It’s not the fastest around, but it sure is portable. You can get it from Toshiba direct today for $115 in Graphite Black or brushed Aluminum Grey, and it should hit retail stores starting in October.

Toshiba outs Canvio Slim portable drive: 500GB, $115 and just 9mm thick

Toshiba reaches out to the Ultrabook set with a 9mmthick Canvio Slim portable hard drive

It turns out that if you take an Ultrabook-style 7mm hard drive and put it in a sleek enclosure, you end up with a portable HDD that’s barely any bigger, thicker or heavier than a smartphone. Toshiba guessed this might happen, and so it came up with a new addition to its Canvio range: the Canvio Slim, which sports 500GB of PC- and Mac-compatible luggage room, uses a single USB 3.0 connection for data and power, and is encased in either “graphite-black” or silver brushed aluminum. Look for it in stores from October priced around $115, including a three-year warranty.

Toshiba Camileo BW20 camcorder is one tough cookie

I am quite sure that some of us out there do our very best to make sure that the shiny new device which we just purchased is covered with a layer of protection, but despite our best and most sincere efforts, the inevitable eventually happens, where a momentary lapse of concentration results in the heartbreaking sound of your smartphone hitting the concrete floor from the height of your waist. Another broken screen and a few hundred dollars poorer later with a replacement device, you swear to yourself that your next purchase had better be able to match your legendary butterfingers ability, which is exactly why we are talking about the Toshiba Camileo BW20 camcorder today.

The Toshiba Camileo BW20 camcorder is not only waterproof but shockproof as well, and to dive straight into its extra tough features, here we are with word that it is capable of working just fine even up to 16 feet underwater, and will shrug off dust as well as shocks, brushing off accidental drops of up to five feet. Definitely families and sports enthusiasts who love recording whatever comes their way regardless of the situation will fall in love with the Toshiba Camileo BW20 camcorder, and parents, too, will be able to let their little ones perform some video capture at times without worrying about whether the Camileo BW20 is able to live up to the rigors of a child.

That’s for its durability, how about its imaging performance? Toshiba will not sell itself short with the Camileo BW20, where it boasts of an f/2.2 aperture lens, a 5-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor, and video image stabilization so that you can shoot video with greater clarity, even when you are underwater. Not only that, sharing your videos and photos on YouTube, Facebook, Picasa and TwitVid are a snap, not to mention being able to relive those magical moments on a HDTV thanks to the built-in HDMI output port. The BW20 even comes with a handy floating wrist strap so that it will not end up at the bottom of the pond or lake.

Toshiba is asking for a reasonable $129.99 for the Camileo BW20 camcorder as it makes its way to decent retail stores all round.
