Microsoft to Windows RT OEMs: ‘If your name’s not on the list, you’re not making a tablet’
Posted in: Today's ChiliChina Times is reporting that Microsoft is only letting an elite few companies build Windows RT tablets in order to focus its research and development resources. It reportedly asked three chipmakers to pick up to two OEMs to bring inside the tent, with NVIDIA grabbing ASUS and Lenovo, TI snagging Toshiba and Qualcomm selecting Samsung and HP. However, the latter company dropped out of the program to concentrate on x86 machines, so it’s rumored that Dell’s currently jockeying to take its place. The first wave of completed tablets will arrive on October 26th, and Redmond won’t open up the market until January next year — so expect Windows RT to be the buzz-word CES 2013.

I clearly remember the Blu-ray vs HD DVD war many moons ago, and in the end, Sony’s Blu-ray format won the battle – but how has the uptake for Blu-ray movies been so far? DVDs certainly still rule the roost in many parts of the world, mainly thanks to the cost of converting your entire movie library into the Blu-ray format. Well, Toshiba has since jumped over to the Blu-ray divide, and they now debut a couple of slim slot-in BDXL recorders known as the BDR-Z260 and BDR-Z250.
The two of them will come in a slim design as mentioned above, where Toshiba claims that they are 64% more compact compared to its predecessors. They will also sport a couple of Digital TV tuners, in addition to 2TB of storage space for the Z260, while the Z250 has a smaller capacity at half that amount. Shared specifications include USB connectivity, USB video recording capability and DLNA with Network Recording capacity as long as there is some compatible hardware in the vicinity. No idea on pricing as at press time though.

Toshiba REGZA T-02D smartphone launches in Japan: ‘New AMOLED Plus’ display, old resolution
Posted in: Today's ChiliConfusingly announced by Fujitsu, the Toshiba Regza T-02D will settle into a wall of similarly bright-colored, good-looking smartphones in NTT DoCoMo stores starting this week. The (Japan-only) phone’s 4.3-inch OLED screen holds onto a middling qHD resolution, but Fujitsu says its “new AMOLED Plus technology” will apparently render in higher clarity than any of its preceding smartphone displays — we’ll wait to see it in action before coming to any conclusions. There’s no word on who’s behind the dual-core 1.5GHz processor, but Xi connectivity (how Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo brands its LTE provision) makes a Qualcomm chipset likely. Fujitsu is also pushing the phone’s ‘human-centric’ Android skin, like what we saw on its own quad-core slab). This involves a collection of UI tweaks to the base Android 4.0 OS, including Intellicolor, where the phone will sense the color of ambient light and tweak the display accordingly. The phone’s 13.1-megapixel camera reaches an impressively high ISO level of 25600, running on Sony’s back-illuminated Exmor R sensor, while Fujitsu’s also channeled the ghost of the original Motorola Atrix, resurrecting a fingerprint unlock sensor. Other features worth mentioning include high-definition NOTTV compatibility, plus certified water and dust resistance. As is expected from the world of Japanese smartphones, there’s a selection of colors too — the T-02D will be available in Pink, Black and Blue from launch. Japan residents wondering exactly which company made the phone can try to get their head around the full release below.

Toshiba outs Tecra R940 and R950 for small business set, prices start at $600
Posted in: Today's ChiliLast month, Toshiba gave its Tecra line the Ivy Bridge treatment, outing the enterprise-focused R940 and R950 with fingerprint readers and the Smart Client Manager. Today it circled back to give smaller businesses something new, though the company confusingly chose the same naming scheme for its more budget-priced Tecra machines. Not to be confused with the corporate crowd’s Tecra R940 and R950, these two models are available only through ToshibaDirect, and they forgo some of the higher-end business security features like the fingerprint reader to keep the price down. The 14-inch Tecra R940 starts at $600 and can be configured with a third-gen Intel CPU, optional AMD dedicated graphics and up to 16GB of RAM. The 15.6-inch Tecra R950 also goes for $600 and up, and both laptops can be configured with 320GB hard drives all the way up to 512GB SSDs. Check out the presser below, and you can hit up the product pages to check out the full configuration options.
