Vizio 14-inch Thin + Light Touch Notebook

VIZIO 14 inch Thin Light touch Vizio 14 inch Thin + Light Touch Notebook[CES 2013] We have seen our share of new touch notebooks for Windows 8 and today, Vizio is coming to CES with its Thin+Light Touch lineup. The 14-inch model runs the AMD A10 4657M Quad Core 2.3GHz  processor with 8GB RAM and features a HD+ (1600×800) touch display.

From the product photo we have, the aluminum unibody chassis looks thin and elegant, at 0.66-inch it is slimmer than the 13-inch Macbook air, however, it is one pound heavier than the Apple notebook (4.1 lbs vs. 2.96 lbs). I am eager to see it on the show floor at CES to be able to compare the built quality.

VIZIO 11.6-inch Windows 8 Tablet PC

VIZIO 11 6 tablet windows 1 VIZIO 11.6 inch Windows 8 Tablet PC[CES 2013] VIZIO is coming to CES with a number of Windows 8 including thin laptops and one 11. 6” tablet. A hair thicker than the iPad (0.4” vs. 0.37” – 9.4 mm / 10.16 mm) for a significantly larger display (11.6” vs. 9.5”), the VIZIO tablet  runs an AMD Z60 dual-core 1 GHz processor with 2GB RAM. That processor should deliver higher performance than the Microsoft Surface which runs on nVidia’s Tegra 3. The downside of the AMD solution would probably come from the shorter battery life.

The Full HD display (1920 x 1080) supports ten-fingers touch to comfortably operates the new Microsoft OS. There is only one front facing 2 MP camera however, the 64GB SSD offers good storage capacity. On the connectivity side, you will get the standard Micro HDMI out, micro USB 2.0, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. At 1.66 lbs, the device weighs a little more than the iPad (1.44 lbs) and the Surface RT (less than 1.5 lbs) with a larger body.

This seems to be an excellent Windows 8 tablet on the paper, but with no information regarding the pricing we cannot tell if this is a good product or not. In addition, we need to see it with our own eyes to check the build quality and actual battery life.

Lenovo ThinkVision Mobile Touch Monitor

lenovo thinkvision 06 640x585 Lenovo ThinkVision Mobile Touch Monitor[CES 2013] Lenovo does not only make great business machines, they have also branched out to deliver mobile touchscreen displays. Case in point, the Lenovo ThinkVision Mobile Touch that has arrived at CES 2013, where it is touted to be the first and slimmest touch mobile monitor from Lenovo. Forget about seeing this as a secondary display, the ThinkVision Mobile Touch is much more than that, boasting a 10-point touch digitizer pen and wireless connectivity, delivering the full Windows 8 touch and writing experience to those who tend to live out of a suitcase.

Measuring just 7.2mm at its thinnest point and tipping the scales at just 1.6lbs, you know for sure that the ThinkVision Mobile Touch is one svelte and highly portable device. It carries a 13.3″ backlit display at 1600 x 900 resolution, and has a 256-degree pressure digitizer pen to accompany it. 3-year warranty adds to overall peace of mind, in addition to Gorilla Glass for that added degree of protection.

The battery is said to last for up to four hours on a single charge, and you can also use this as a mobile Internet kiosk by hooking it up to a nearby WiFi network. A single USB 3.0 port adds to its expansion options, but that is not much. Will the ThinkVision Mobile Touch be able to find a niche for itself in the mass market? We sure hope so.

Autodesk researchers develop ‘magic finger’ that reads gestures from any surface (video)

DNP Autodesk magic finger

By combining a camera that detects surfaces with one that perceives motion, Canadian university researchers and Autodesk have made a sensor that reads finger gestures based on which part of your body you swipe. The first camera can detect pre-programmed materials like clothing, which would allow finger movements made across your pants or or shirt to activate commands that call specific people or compose an email, for instance. Autodesk sees this type of input as a possible compliment to smartphones or Google Glasses (which lack a useful input device), though it says the motion detection camera isn’t accurate enough yet to replace a mouse. Anyway, if you wanted that kind of device for your digits, it already existsin spades.

Disney’s REVEL could turn the whole world into a tactile touchscreen (video)

Disneys Revel could turn the whole world into a touchscreen video

Disney Research think it can go one better on Tactile and Haptic touch displays by using electrical fields to add sensation to nearly anything you can touch. Using Reverse Electrovibration, REVEL works by strapping an electrostatic signal generator to your body, so when you come into contact with an object on the same electrical plane, that low-level field can be altered to create friction. It’s hoped that the technology could revolutionize touchscreens, add a whole new level of feeling to augmented reality and help blind people feel their way around. There’s a video after the break, but be warned, it’s light on the sort of cartoony hijinks you’d normally expect from the House of Mouse.
